A basic Chinese dinner meal usually comes with a meat main dish, a soup, and a vegetable side dish (一荤一素一汤). Then served with white rice. Of course, the standard can change depending on the servings, if it is a big event like a wedding, usually, there will be 12-18 dishes on each table. If you just cook for yourself, you can minimize it to one recipe. Today's video is an example to show you how to prepare a proper Chinese dinner meal. I will talk about the culture behind it and why we make it this way. Hope you enjoy it!

Its so wonderful to see Chinese cooking in a less dish-focused fashion and more in the larger sense of the full meal and by extension giving a greater understanding of the food culture in general. There is not one single part of this meal that was not appealing in its own right. Thank you for continuing to make these videos and thank you for making me hungry after I have already had dinner. :)

Well, that was fun! I really appreciate the explanations and cultural references. I love bean sprouts.
I think the main reason I love Chinese food culture is due to the high vegetable ratios and the use of garlic, ginger, chili plus all the fresh herbs and dried spices, which are all foods I love. Also very little dairy products which do not agree with me. I grew up in a house with no dessert so I can relate to that as well. I had no idea it was something people ate every night and when I got married my husband had to get use to not having any very quickly, lol! Thank so much for all the hard work that went into this one.

I love Chinese food too .. I did a big China trip years ago. I loved the food sooo much even though communicating with waiters was sometimes very difficult. Much of it was a surprise - like Crispy chicken using lots of bones with little meat on it. I loved the idea to use all of the animal but it was difficult to eat for me. I would love to go back after the years .. not in these times I guess 😢

Modern western diets contain way more meat, dairy and sugar than is healthy, which has caused a significant rise in obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc. Chinese cuisine isn't quite ideal either but it's at least much better. I'm vegan so I can't use most of these recipes directly, I'm mostly here to get a better understanding for how the chinese "flavour world" works in order to be able to adapt it into my cooking skillset, as currently the only chinese dishes I feel comfortable with are mapo tofu and some stir frys.

    • @henryliu3770
      @henryliu3770 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@fdagpigj Late to the talk. But if you can tolerant soy, most of Chinese dishes' meat component can be replaced with either dried / smoke tofu which is much more condensed and firm than the extra-firm white tofu, plus it have much more protein rivaling some meats. This make them ideal for stir fry or barbecue. If soy is a problem, then King Oyster Mushroom slices also works well.

Having vegetables accompany meat is something that drew my interest to Chinese cooking. Its nice when you can get their flavors to mix, or they share an aromatic flavor like garlic.

You don’t know how grateful I am to you sharing so generously.
I used to work in a Chinese takeaway but I got to enjoy authentic Chinese food at the hands of my lovely employers.
My son is also half Chinese but because of dietary choices we don’t eat out in Chinese restaurants
Because of your recipes which FYI have always succeeded (they are wonderful) it brings such happiness to be able to learn, cook, eat and enjoy the food that brings so many happy memories
And my son can experience food from the other half of him 💕

Pro tip for ginger; it’s so much easier to get it cut fine if you just throw your ginger knobs in the freezer and then use a cheese grater to grate it. Finally minced ginger in a fraction of the time!
These look absolutely delicious though. Been meaning to try traditional Chinese food. As much as I love takeout, went to an authentic Chinese place with one of my best friends in college who is first generation Chinese-American and was super satisfied, so much more variety and balance in flavor than the simple sweet, sour, salty palette of most takeout places.

You will be astonished how much it improves after every single use! And it starts out pretty amazing already! The wok is so fantastic I'm going to buy like 10 of them and give them as gifts to people I love! :) Thank you, Mandy! And have fun, Clement!

@@-laodoushunancuisine4641 i've been using it everyday, sometimes twice a day, the texture looks a bit more rough (meaning the color is different in the middle of the wok, where the food usually gather and the metal spatula scrapes) but it's normal, and the non-stick .. well let me tell you about the non-stick : it's amazing, even if I don't use oil I can cook anything and it doesn't stick to it ! Everything just slides, I can cook chicken, veggies, seafood, tofu and let it brown and crust up wonderfully and it's never stuck to the bottom. It was a little bit the first uses, but if you clean it successfully and season it after uses, it works WONDERS ! Not disappointed at all.

I bought this wok a few weeks ago and use it a few times a week. The process to remove the paraffin takes way more time than the instructions say. It took well over 20 minutes for me to remove it. It took about a week and a half to get the side to be consistently non-stick, not too bad. Now it's easy to clean, just clean with a little a water, dry and then season with a little oil. I'm really happy with the wok.

Mandy, this was so interesting! I subscribe to many cooking channels of cuisines all over the world, and very few cooking channels ever present an entire meal. (And in fact, many times I've therefore found myself wondering what goes with what, traditionally, anyway.) And, of course, the food looks so good! I love your little tips you give us - such as don't cook the meatballs in boiling water or the texture will be wrong, hold the semi-frozen chicken firmly because it is slippery, you don't have to take off the root of the bean sprout because it's edible, etc. You anticipate our thoughts and questions and explain things so well.
I would love, love, love to see more whole meal presentations. Well done as always, Mandy. You're such a gem!

I'm so glad I found this channel. I'm in London, UK and I've struggled to find easy straight forward information on these types of dishes. I'm familiar with them from China Town restaurants, but have never understood how to make them properly.
