I've recently started painting again after a decade-long pause, and I found your videos in my attempt to refresh my technique a bit. But just in the span of the last few months, you seem to be at a very exciting stage of your development as an artist - from a talented maker to a thoughtful, self-aware artist. It's exciting to watch and I'm happy to join the ride - subscribed!
I totally agree with what you said in the last three minutes. No artist work is existentially original. The life of an artist is immersing oneself in art and images. The first 'serious' piece of art I did when I got my first set of drug store water colors was to open the encyclopedia and try to copy the Mona Lisa. I've always been an over achiever. It didn't look like the picture; I was crushed; but that's different story. Every art book we open, every museum/gallery we stroll through, every class we take, every YT video we watch, becomes a part of who we are as artists. I haven't started using AI, but I hope to. I don't see it as a way to generate paintings. I do see it as a way to generate references, although, like you said, you can't just take them uncritically. A few weeks ago, though, I spent three hours looking at pictures of the Ponte Vechio in Florence trying to find what I wanted... and I was "stealing" them. I only wish I could hop on a plane and go take my own pictures. So much easier to just type in "Ponte Vechio, Florence Italy, Late afternoon, sunny day, view straight down the river, from the [X] bridge, shifted slightly to the right" and then click through alternatives until I see what I want. Or the painting I have in mind of Icharus falling from the sky, head first in a cloud of feathers. My figure drawing skills aren't near good enough to draw that from imagination and I have no model. I wont use "Icharus" as a prompt because I don't want other artists paintings. I will say photographic image of man in lycra shorts (can't generate nudes), falling head first, legs in [X] position, arms in [Y] position, expression of horror on his face, to get a basic body that I can work with, again, regenerating until I see what I have in my mind. Obviously taking note of fingers, toes, etc, but I do draw well enough to freehand those in if necessary.
Thank you! I care very much about my art and AI can be useful but doesn't have human touch, the heart of an artist. Thanks again and happy holidays to you both.
I've been painting on canvas about 50 years; the past 20 with oil over acrylics, to finesse the 'glow' and subtle nuances of shadow and highlights oil paint affords, so, it's cool to hear you excitedly describe using this technique. Though I have quite a bit of brushwork experience, I have picked up some tricks and tips I didn't think about before; plus, your business acumen is inspiring to those of us who wish to be more Artistically successful. Keep up the cool videos that inspire us all!
I’m amazed that you would have so many paintings for an exhibition! I would think they would be snapped up they are so fabulous. Can you exhibit prints of your original work? Hi from Australia! I have enjoyed watching how you work for quite a while. Thank you for your tips.
@@StudioWildlife Absolutely, I thought so as well, my intention is to provide positive and constructive feedback. Your channel and the way you explain things are easy to understand. "I get it" now, thank you for your time here.
I agree with both statements. Learning is good, quick clips are not. It's a different kind of distraction for someone with ADHD, making it harder to concentrate when the background keeps changing behind you.
I agree quite a lot on your assessment of AI, particularly on how it is similar to the way all of us artists take inspiration from one another...though, I'm still reluctant to use AI due to potential intellectual property issues. To me, it is, however, a good way to brainstorm ideas for works. One thing I'd like to point out though is that you can improve the composition of the initial image produced by an AI generator, at least, with Midjourney, you can open the editor and move the edges of the image around as well as regenerate parts of the image. It's still not perfect especially if you want to have more than one subject interacting (like a predator chasing prey) where it will almost never get a good balanced composition, but it's improving for at least single subject images.
For every statement where you say "AI can't do that", I would add to the sentence "...yet". Yes, AI compositions are sloppy, proportions are silly, but as we go forward ingenieers are gradually improving their models, and I wouldn't be surprised if in the soon future we run into a specialization of AI models, e.g. speically for cats, dogs, landscapes, etc. where they work on fixing the mistakes. Just see how current AI has fixed the 6 fingers hand problem.
I agree that they will improve but I also don’t think they will ever get to the point they can match humans painting, in my opinion anyway. I just think the truly great art can’t be made with mathematical formulae and algorithms and that the design element, compositional choices and brush work for those truly great works of art has to come from a human
i am an artist and i really like your work, and you motivated me to go and try to paint an animal painting ( most likely tiger). keep up your amazing work. and one question what do you use to varnish/clearcoat your paintings when you finish ? i appreciate it if you can replay thank you
Thank you and very glad my paintings are inspiring you to make your own! I use liquitex acrylic gloss as a non removable base coat then Windsor and Newton satin or glossy as a removable layer of varnish
Great info and things to think about… yes it’s a tool, but certainly not one to rely on by any means… otherwise we’ll end up like the Stepford Wives… 😂😂😂 ❤
Too many changes of you looking to your 3 camera angle Non need for That, we value your knowledge and words a lot, Those “looking here and there and then changing again are too distracting
Yeah I bought some new cameras and got a bit carried away 😂 trying something new but I’ll get better at the cinematography with a few videos practice 😂
@StudioWildlife thank you! 🥰 And also, talking to one camera for longer periods shows you're paying attention to your audience. Beyond the worky, arty stuff, I wish you and your family the merriest time for Christmass and all the best for 2025!
No one can create art like an artist not even ai. We have the ability to make art in our own style
Keep going

I agree with you totally. AI cannot replace the human quality of emotion that we put into our paintings.

AI will never be able to translate emotion the real artist can start. Happy holidays and I'll see you next year.
God I love the lions you paint
Thanks!

I fully agree brother. 👍😊 Great to hear your take on this whole AI thang. And minimal usage of it not 100% usage!
I'm really learning a lot from you, thank you. (I find the screen view change every few seconds a bit distracting, though).
I’ll work on that 😂 just trying something new 😂

@@slack9400 Yes! I also have ADHD.
I will be anticipating the video on reference photos. This part has stopped me cold.

Do you draw reptiles, insects, and fish? I would love to see more of pieces surrounding these types of creatures.
AI taught me horses can have 5 legs. lol

As much as I adore your art, I can't watch this. Too much jumping from camera to camera.
I was just trying something new 😂 less camera movements next time 😂

Damn, I knew those paintings looked AI generated, what a disappointment
It's amazing how something so soulless can still be noticed even if it's transferred to a traditional medium
