I have a Babtist Palmistry that was removed from Confederate dead near the center of the 2nd line by an ancestor, Samuel Guess. He wrote a detailed description of the location on the end page. In 2003 I was able to visit this battlefield and locate the area. I can imagine some soldier, next to a campfire, drawing comfort from the words.
I visited that place.. earlier in the day we were at an reenactment behind a farmhouse that was used as a hospital for both sides. It still had a few cannonball holes in it.
QUESTION: IVE A question, why would the confederate armies make a three tier defense?? What if it had been a single line as far back as they could go? Would that have made more sense, rather than spreading out their lines over and over again; which counterproductivly spread themselves too thin and easily overtaken?
One reason is they were outnumbered and if a single line was broken, then it would be all over. Three lines in depth gives you reserves to plug any gaps and gives the first line somewhere to fall back to and reform. They were just trying to slow the Yankees down.

Yes, and also the other way around. Even families were split and fought each other.
