I hope I live to see the day where all the "this frame soaks road buzz better than the other frame" and "this bike feels more sluggish than the other bike" will be replaced by scientific, standardised tests. Also, chainsets are not "suited" or unsuited for bikes, they are "suited" or unsuited for cyclists and courses they ride on. If I take this bike to a proper ride in the French Alps, with some 2-3 HC climbs in the menu, I'm pretty sure that chainset will be far from suiting that bike.
My R3 was spec'd with Dura Ace mechanical which is what I wanted mechanical with rim brakes from Cervelo in the US, however, there is no need to spend the extra over Ultegra. I changed the wheels from the junk heavy ones that come stock. Love the bike.
I own an R3 and would agree that the frame deserves much better wheels. I knew that when I purchased it and deliberately bought a set of Roval CL50s having never used the original wheels. It is a wonderful bike, so surprised Cervelo still havent sorted the wheels for 2019!
Well apparently every single big brand now sells most of their bikes with cheap ass wheels in order to increase their profit margin. There's quite a lot of big brand bikes coming with full carbon framesets, Ultegra Di2 and Mavic Aksiums or DT Swiss 1800s. If they gave a damn about offering the best value for money, they'd spec their bikes with 105 and some 1400-1500g wheels instead, and add some carbon wheels to Ultegra level bikes.
I have been riding an R3 for the last few months, I found the review slightly confusing with it's niche categorisation. . As far as I am concerned it is a tamed race bike that can be used and enjoyed by the average rider. I agree that it needs a decent wheel upgrade though.
The R3 Di2 comes with a nice looking pair of Novatec R3 38mm carbon wheels on top of being awesome Di2, maybe that is the better option. Looks like a classic road machine that you could get a lot of comfortable miles on. $5500 (£4300) seems the going rate too vs Trek, Specialized, Giant, et el.
You mention it is not as aggressive bike and a more comfortable frame. I accept that. But doesn't some of the positioning coming down to set up, using spacers and the length of your stem. On the R5, if you used an extra 10mm spacer and maybe a slightly shorter stem, would you not have the same comfort? Not everyone is going to ride a bike with a slammed stem
It's all about the extreme ends of the spectrum. If you want to be very upright on the R5 you'd need lots of spacers which isn't great...if you want to be really low on the R3 you need a -17 stem or similar or might not be even able to get low enough...if you're somewhere inbetween you can almost certainly make both bikes fit you.
Can you also review the new 2019 S3 disc? I understand that would be up to the discretion of Cervelo to send a loaner for your review, however a video review of the S3 disc would be welcomed.
Bikeradar did a much more informed review of the R3. If you're not going for a custom build, at this price you'll almost certainly want to put your own choice of wheels on so surely better to offer a bike you can ride and give the customer the choice when upgrading the wheels...and either hang onto the cheap ones for winter or put them on eBay. R5 geometry was developed for pros as many of them were sizing down on their R3s to get a lower position. So unless you're naturally very flexible or used to being in an aggressive position for 5 hours a day the R3 probably makes better sense. Shame to have skirted over the disc version... I have the R3D with Zipp 302s and it's the perfect all rounder.
Got an r3 disc with mechanical ultegra and ended up putting set of arc1100 dicut 48 on it. Have to say the wheel completely took the bike to another level which is surely expected. All in all just dont buy an R3 if you are on a budget.
Seems like it’s more about trying to achieve a certain price point with room for upgrades for those of us who don’t want to spend $10,000 on a bike off the bat and or transfer some of our upgrades from our current ride. Currently trying to decide on what to go with to replace my 2006 RS a C3 or something else.
Have to agree with the review... I have the Cervelo S3 and the stock wheels/tyres do not match up to the frame... swapped in some 50mm carbon wheels and Vittorias and this transformed the bike! So a very similar experience to what you described.
Hi great video. I bought one a couple of months ago and know what you mean about the wheels. I have some Magic Ksyrium carbon wheels but they have a 15mm through axle at the back whereas the Cervelo R3 is 12mm. I know you can get adaptors but I can't figure out which one I need and whether this would work on the R3 with those wheels. Would love to get these wheels on it but don't know how to go about it. Can you help please? Thanks in anticipation.
R3 won two Paris-Roubaix and one Tour de France. I think that qualifies it as a race bike. Also, you do not appear to be aware that it was the R3 that introduced thin seat stays.
How does R3 compares to S-Works Tarmac SL6? How much better is the SL6? I ride on the average 100km per ride on my R3 2017 and I do mostly flats & climbs in the region of 500m in each ride. I love descents. I don’t seem to corner that well on my current bike which is on Campy Bora One 50 on Continental S4000II tires.
Hi, how did you fit the Mavic wheels - see me post above - aren't they different axle lengths? I have Mavic Kysyrium but can't fit them and don't know what adaptor to use, what did you do?
@@ChrisW444 Hi Chris I bought the bike from Cycle Exchange in London with the wheels already on the bike.Sorry about such a long delay only just read your response.
I have similar BMC bike and I want to recommend few upgrades: 1/ comfy saddle 2/ latex inner tubes 3/ Highest class wheels , that you can afford 4/ highest class tires - size depends on inner and outer width of wheels. 5/ carbon handlebar and seatpost 6/ ENJOY and have a nice ride xD
Isn’t it about time Cycling weekly sacked the crap that they have at the minute. Clearly nether have zero idea and probably just read what’s given. Shocking review
Getting a 2020 r3 in a weeks time. The shop I bought it from screwed up, I ordered the cannondale SuperSix evo disc 2020, but they made a mistake with the stock and none were available. So they offered me the r3 at the same price as the supersix (so I got £500 more bike for the money). The question is did I get a good or a bad deal ? I think I got a decent deal but not sure.
Totally not agree on that Continental Grand prix 4000 ( and now 5000) are not good tires. The are very good tires and I use them on all my wheels. I never puncture.
They don't puncture, but their sidewalls get shredded to pieces whenever they come close to any small rock or sharp debris placed on the road. The GP4000s at least, didn't have the chance to use the 5000s yet and I am mostly likely never going to, as Continental tyres are irrevocably dead to me now.
I think you meant sunweb is riding on cervelo this year. CCC is on giant.
Also maybe squoval instead of square-o
i really do love these kind of videos talking in depth about the bike and not advertised at all

Go to a bike shop. You'll feel the difference. I own an r3 and many other racing bikes and what they say could be felt on the first test ride.
My R3 was spec'd with Dura Ace mechanical which is what I wanted mechanical with rim brakes from Cervelo in the US, however, there is no need to spend the extra over Ultegra. I changed the wheels from the junk heavy ones that come stock. Love the bike.
Why no mention of the disc version? Love my 2015 R3 with Fulcrum Racing Zero wheels.

I put Dura-Ace groupset on mine and I've been loving the bike. Not overly aggressive but still fast and a great climber.

Very nice bike and comfort trump's all when you are a recreational rider. I would like to see a review on the Merida Scultura 7000e or above.

In summary stick some decent hoops on her and it’s a great all round bike

Are these 1980s tennis socks or some Le Col vintage series? ;)

This was very informative, I enjoyed this thanks guys.
I have the R2. I heard it was basically the same frame with different forks. Is this true?
I have one too. I've heard it's exactly the same frame with a different fork.
Hoping you guys can also review the s3 and compare with the s5
I have a Cervelo R3 with a set of Mavic carbon wheels absolutely flys great bike and i race it regular.

Team Sunweb riders are on Cervelo, not CCC.
Isn’t a level below this the r2 105?
The bright orange boys.. yeah right 😂🤣
My R3 is for hills and longer rides. Rides like a Cadillac compared to my super six.
If the R free is actually free I will take one!
soooo, its a budget R5, got it
I've got a 2018 R3, any suggestions for rim brake wheel upgrades over the Aksiums?
Thomas Leach Campagnolo Neutrons all the way!!
That was good. I’d love to see your review of an Orbea Orca (non-Aero). Thanks
You basically said its everything.

Hi, please review Fuji Roubaix 1.3 2018, lovely bike, thanks
wow hambinis favorite bike haha
AWESOME!

I believe Cont. Grand Prix and Conti GP 4000 are different tires and quite a bit difference in price!
Omg... for a minute I thought Rupert was using toe straps....
Doubting things now😂😂getting the team wrong is poor 😀

I rented one, hated the thing.
Is the worlds most boring ever review! Advertisers actually pay for product placing on this channel ?
You can tell they are struggling to repeat the bullshit that Cervelo marketing sold them.
Cut the fork it is a racing bike ffs
Manufacturers aren't keen on journalists cutting the steerers of their review bikes...
Never a good idea to cut the forks on your bike... Especially if it isn't yours.
