    Welcome to Peterson Family Farm. On this TH-cam channel, we plan to show viewers what happens on a real life family farm in Kansas. From working with animals, to planting seeds, to harvesting grain, to putting up hay, to fixing equipment, you'll get to see what farming is like! Our farm is a 5th generation farm started in 1882 by our great great grandparents. We grow wheat, corn, soybeans, milo, sunflowers, and forages and we feed about 1,000 head of cattle. To learn more about it, watch our channel intro video here: • Welcome to Our New You...

    Watching the eyes of a cow surrounded in black as she comes in for a drink...that was beautiful...few people ever see that. Cattle connect people to the land. Thank you Peterson Family!

    Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable.
    Great going with harvest Peterson team. You all as a family to including wife’s, do such a great team work getting harvest done. Wonderful family working together!!!! The drone footage was outstanding. Thanks for doing that. Interesting to watch the drone footage.
    Pile of milo at elevator is absolutely huge-wow.
    The new baby rides really good in the tractor. Special years for her. Wonderful that you do that. Brighton seems very happy in the tractor.
    When she is older you will have to tell her the stories. The 7720 combine does real good for its age. Good head unit for milo that is down. Older equipment is real handy at times. Great you kept it. Thanks to the wife’s for feeding the crew. Wonderful!!!! I always enjoyed meals in the field. Been there done that.
    About it I now. You all take care and be safe. God watch over all of you. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks for everything.

    I loved the music with the drone footage, especially when all 3 pieces of equipment made the sharp 360-degree turn almost simultaneously together---just spectacular! You all as a family sure work expertly together like a well-oiled machine! I believe for all the tough farm and cattle raising work you do that to also put it all on video is superb!! Takes lots of strength to do all that! Your excellence would be difficult for other farmers to beat---you're the very best, cream of the crop---pardon the pun!!!

    Will ya make any silage from those stalks, sure is a lot of green in them yet? Many many years ago when my Dad and Uncle would raise Milo, in the fall just before harvest, 1000's and I mean 1000's of black birds would descend on the field and nearly clean them off before harvesting it. They tried shooting at them and even strung up these big firecrackers on a rope to scare them off. It worked at first but after a couple of days they'd just fly up and come right back down to eat more.🙃

    • @petersonfamilyfarm1778
      @petersonfamilyfarm1778  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We make silage sometimes, but rarely. Usually we just leave the stalks until spring and plant soybeans right into them. We have some flocks of birds eat the milo sometimes too!

    Like JDwoman stated, except for the itching milo harvest is easier to harvest than wheat, most years.

    Good video! Do those outside piles get covered?

    • @raymondbailey4538
      @raymondbailey4538 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. It's like a big plastic-covered mountain. Then they truck it out to other rail-head elevators for shipment as the prices change until it is all gone for next season. There is plastic on the ground and usually concrete K-rails surrounding it to keep it in.

    Do you use any special attachments on the rigid grain headers to cut head loss for the milo?

  • @MrNaylorchristopherl
    @MrNaylorchristopherl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    What do you all do with your stalks from harvesting milo? I know you’re no till but do you shred your stalks down before planting into them next season?

    • @raymondbailey4538
      @raymondbailey4538 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      According to other vids, they run a tiller over them to chop them into smaller pieces, then drill soybeans or another nitrogen-fixing crop next. If they chop it green for silage they cut it closer to the ground and drill directly through it.

    • @petersonfamilyfarm1778
      @petersonfamilyfarm1778  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We do not do anything to them typically just plant into them next spring. Sometimes we graze or make inlt silage, but not usually.

    I never see any blackbirds in your videos.Every field of milo near where I live has its own HUGE flock of blackbirds feeding on it as it ripens. Do you have that to deal with too?

    • @petersonfamilyfarm1778
      @petersonfamilyfarm1778  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is enough milo around that the birds can't get to it all but we do have some damage.
