"Instant Karma!" was conceived, written, recorded and released within a period of ten days, making it one of the fastest-released songs in pop music history.
I believe John Lennon described writing the song this way - write it for breakfast, record it for lunch and release it for dinner.

All of the members of this group did great work and outside the box. One of the great drummers and fantastic singers . Paul has a great body of work outside of the Beatles. His music with Wings is fantastic.

I was in a hotel downtown Dallas. The night before I was super tired - ordered room service - a half a bottle of wine - turned on Monday Night Football and fell asleep early the next morning went to the lobby to put my money in for a USA Today paper and dropped the quarter. The headline almost put me to my knees. "John Lennon Dead" went into the crowded restaurant - it was dead dead silent - people were crying and sobbing or just silently eating their breakfast. What a loss of a beautiful human being.
I had gone to bed early that night, to go into work extra early. I had my clock radio set to music, and I heard it click on, rolled over, and the first thing I heard was 'John Lennon, dead, at 40' Right then and there my heart broke, work was somber, everyone that day were zombies just going through the motions. God, what a sad, heartbreaking day.
i remember where I was - came into class at art school.
I'd been stationed in England in the USAF and had already made many British Friends .... I spent the next Months Apologising for my F-ed Up Country!
I worked nights at a restaurant. Place was closed and we were cleaning up after a long hard day. I went home, grabbed a beer and plopped onto the sofa like usual, to turn on the evening news and catch up with all the goings on. First image ... John Lennon 1940-1980. They were playing "Across the Universe." " ... nothing's gonna change my world." I was stunned. Still every time I hear that song of think of that horrible night.
I called in sick to work because I was a bawling😭 wreck
I love this song, one of my favorites by John. "Watching the Wheels" is probably my all-time favorite of his solo stuff, so I hope you'll react to that sometime. "Woman", "(Just Like) Starting Over", and "Give Peace a Chance" are other ones to add to your list. You should also check out "Valotte" by Julian Lennon, John's son. Julian sounds so much like his dad it's scary.

That is another signature John Lennon song. So beautiful. There is no one nowadays who could touch that song. They just do not have the ability.
They all have millions of bucks' worth of "bling" around their necks, but emotionally they are bankrupt and couldn't write a meaningful lyric if their lives depended on it.

I am a Lennon fan. He sings songs of idealism, but they always come from deep in the heart. I do have to admit that Paul is the overall talent for composition, vocal ability, etc. But John for his heart and soul and for the battles that he has fought internally and externally. He is not just a musician, but an archetype.
john wasn't concern about songs that sounded good, he was interested in the message. He referred to paul's songwriting as spoon moon.

I'm with John Lennon on the subject of Paul McCartney's music. He's prolific for sure, but both John and George said more in 1 song than Paul has said to date.
The drummer is Alan White who later played drums for YES.
Shine on John. Try Ringo's song 'Photograph' and George Harrison's 'What is Life'.
And he just died a few weeks ago.

In addition to all the suggestions listed, please give a listen to his son Julian's work. As you probably know Julian was the subject of the Beatles "Hey Jude". Julian looks exactly like his father, and sounds like him. Try listening to "Valotte" if you close your eyes you might think you're hearing his father, and follow that with "Too Late for Goodbyes".❤
Try his son Sean Lennon instead. He is the better songwriter.

Agree or disagree, John was always very honest and open with his emotions and opinions, and he wore his heart on his sleeve. I will always respect and admitre him for that.
One of his first 70s songs
To me the quality in Lennon’s voice is sincerity. You believe that he completely means w/e he’s saying when he sings. He might think the opposite an hour later, I think his opinions were pretty fluid, but at each moment he sings he’s 100% committed to what he’s saying, with a raw semi-innocence. It’s like you are mainlining his mind, it’s a pretty special thing to be able to convey.
The "think the opposite an hour later" thing he's been accused for is pretty exaggerated, imo. He could say things he didn't mean/contradict himself when he was pissed off in a couple of interviews. That's about it.

Great comment that totally captures who Lennon was. Better than any portrait by a great artist as is Lennon's music.
John Lennon always sang with 100% conviction. You knew he meant every word.
He was an important part of rock history. He wrote his songs to make the world a better place and not afraid to touch social issues. When he got gunned down I was in shock! Why Lennon, a man who believed in love and peace. So sad.
As bad as it sounds it made perfect sense why he would be the one to go after. Yes he stood for love and peace, but America and the way our government works is built out of hate and War and I think he was a threat to that machine. After all as Americans with all these different races if we all love each other and get along then the government can't use this against each other anymore.
ALL the BEATLES believed in Love and Peace, NOT just John

To explain who Klaus Voormann is would take too long; go read his Wikipedia page.
Alan White later became the drummer for Yes (he joined after some of the songs you've done, but he's on "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and has been the drummer for the past 48 years).
Billy Preston played keyboards with the Beatles on that rooftop concert and also had a fine solo career.
The "Plastic Ono Band" was really just John and anyone he could get to play with him. Of course, being John Lennon, it wasn't hard for him to get people to do that.
George Harrison was at the session for this session (he actually brought Phil Spector - who ended up producing this track - to the session). Early takes actually reveal that George had a lot to do with the arrangement of this track. He even played rhythm guitar (which was mixed out) and piano on this recording. This was just before The Beatles officially broke up (when Paul publicly said he was finished with the band), but it showed that, at least, George and John still got along. This is one of my favorite Lennon tracks, and I'm glad you finally got to listen to it. Shine on. :)

@@kevinmclaughlin1092 yeah - you're wrong. Alan White played drums on quite a few early solo recordings for John (including his "Live Peace in Toronto" album). Ringo did play drums on "Cold Turkey" (John's single, before "Instant Karma") and the "Plastic Ono Band" albums by John and Yoko.

Another great John Lennon solo song is "Mind Games". There is a video of this song which features Lennon walking through Central Park near where he lived & ultimately died.
I distinctly remember hearing this on the radio for the first time and it knocked me out. Simple, yet a killer rhythm with the great drum sounds of Alan White (who was the long time drummer for Yes). The energy, the spirit, the feel of this was powerful and I still love it today as one of the best singles of any of the Beatles solo records.

Another Beatles song with John Lennon on lead vocals that I think you two would really enjoy is "Everybody's Got Something To Hide (Except For Me And My Monkey)." It's super uptempo, has an interesting percussion choice, and is probably the most hype song from the Beatles catalog. And for some really great Paul vocals, try "Oh! Darling" which has kind of a throwback sound and features Paul gettin' throaty with it. It's on A LOT of people's list of Top 5 Paul McCartney vocals.
Paul, didn't sleep for 11/2 days to get that gravel voice on Oh darling.

Lennon made quite a few "anthem"-like songs that draw people together with memorable choruses, like Instant Karma and Happy Xmas (War is Over). To continue in that vein and to really get into the hippie vibes, you should definitely check out Give Peace a Chance.
And also, All You Need is Love by the Beatles.... Pure Lennon Magic that brings folks together!

I love the song by John Lennon called “Beautiful Boy” I would hold my grandson and rock him and sing it to him when he was around 3 months to a year old or so. It has great meaning and is very soothing.

It's amazing that Amber picked up on the raw sound of the recording. After John left the Beatles, he intentionally wanted his records to have a raw minimalistic sound. He wanted as few effects as possible. Some of his songs he even recorded in his home studio.

Yes! Until literally just now, I always thought it was called 'Strange Days Indeed', but it turns out you are right! In 1988, I was living in an amazing, creative, free-flowing squat in London and we listened to this song over and over again, because we were living strange days, indeed ❤

I remember that song specifically because for me it was either 1983/84 and I was maybe 9/10 yrs old and it was one of many songs being played in remembrance of the day John Lennon was shot. I didn't really understand at that age, but I remember that song. FYI...my Mom was my influence for my love of anything Beatles.
@@karicastanza5216 My parents loved The Beatles and 'Sgt Pepper's' was released about a month before I was born. I was raised on their music (Sgt Pepper's and Abbey Road are the Beatles' albums that best define my childhood).
I remember the devastation on the day John died (I was 13), but I didn't hear his solo stuff until quite a long time later.
Still gives me chills. An anthem for all human beings.

I remember exactly where I was when I heard John was dead. I was making a sandwich(I even remember what it was- a bologna sandwich!) for work in my kitchen and I was listening to the radio and the announcement came on and it said he was shot dead the night before. I stopped making my sandwich and cried. That whole day I was sad and I couldn’t believe he was gone. His music and legacy will live forever.
I heard that John had been shot on Monday night and cried myself to sleep. Was managing the record department in a department store at the time and drove to work the next morning barely able to see because I could not stop crying. Got to work and set up a makeshift memorial with a little sign I drew that bore the one lyric that immediately came to mind:

Still makes me tear up thinking about that day.

One thing about John’s songs is that it’s the inner voices of the chords that move, where normally it’s the outer voices that move. This is no exception.

So many of the "hippie" era songs were about peace, love, comming together, and other positive vibes. John was at the top of the writing for this genre.

We could use John and the Beatles right now. They did what the threat of American missiles could not. Beatlemania invaded the minds of the Soviet youth and helped bolster the international Youth Movement to destroy the Berlin Wall. The Beatles were the first rip in tearing down the Iron Curtain. I was 16, babysitting for 3 little girls the night the Beatles made their first appearance on Ed Sullivan. I was screaming at the tv. The girls looked at me & then started screaming too.
I'll never forget it.
I grew up on a dairy farm & was a lonely kid with just my barn cats for friends, but for a couple years I'd had a pen pal from London, and I knew all about the Beatles before anybody else. Gillian used to send me color magazine articles about them. I knew all about the Mods and the Rockers, Jane Asher, John's wife Cynthia, plus of course everything about the Beatles themselves.
Well, after that night, I was suddenly popular in school to the point where this one girl, who wouldn't have even looked at me before, stood sobbing at my locker after begging me to sing their next planned single, which I did. It was "Can't Buy Me Love."
John was always my favorite. But for me, his voice is so emotional.

Maybe you could do a reaction for that one some day. The lyrics are gorgeous and the combination of his voice and those lyrics just makes me cry.
At the time, the drummer (Alan White of Yes - may he RIP) was infatuated with playing "straight 8ths" against a triplet (or shuffle) feel, which is how those iconic drum fills were created. John must have loved the odd change in rhythmic feel, and I'm SO glad he did! It really adds a unique flavour to the song.

Phil Spector was into Avante Garde recording/mixing techniques. The drums are definitely featured in this song/mix. There are several psychoacoustic techniques being used on the drums.
The biggest weird thing that you are hearing on the drums is a Slapback Delay. Kinda an Elvis vocals Echo kind of effect. It's an effect that kind of simulates being in a small, yet bright and echoey room with the drum kit.
Lennon is a cultural icon. Not only did he compose some fantastic songs in Beatles and after, but he was also a sharp thinker, eqoquent speaker and spoke out against the Vietnam war, in support of African-American, Native American and womens rights etc. He got alot of flack for that in those days for this, but he of course was way before his time. What he said in the 60s and 70s is mainstream today.

Two weeks after writing Instant Karma, John performed it on the BBC TV show Top of the Pops. Yoko sat to the left of him blindfolded as he played piano and sang. Very strange. Another take showed Yoko sitting beside him knitting as he performed.

Drummer is Alan White a lad from the North East of England who passed away recently. He was gigging around the clubs at 15 years of age.
He played in several bands before John’s Plastic Ono band. He later became a real superstar with the Rock group ‘YES’.
The day John Lennon died, my first wife and I were leaving Ft. Stewart GA to move and got everything in the car; ready to hit the road at 5:30am. The first thing we hear is John was killed... We sat there for like 15 minutes unable to digest what we were hearing 😥😥

R.I.P. Instant Karma was probably a bit of a vacation for him compared with some of the complex Yes changes.
My husband introduced me to this song when it came out in 1970 when we were courting. I have loved it ever since.

John's most iconic work must surely be his "Working Class Hero". A Charlotte DJ got fired for playing it in the background of a Nixon speech. Hard to believe they were even contemporaries. Nixon hated Lennon. It's actually a large part of the Lennon story, they made his immigration process hell and eventually the FBI was spying on him.

And then you have these people nowadays who the fans fall over for lyrics like "if you like it put a ring on it" where their version of great songwriting is to just keep singing the same words over and over to a melody that I can only describe as infantile.

This is one of John's bigger solo hits, but he really has a lot. While I don't have a favorite Beatle, I'm inclined to say John had the best - and shortest - solo career.
Other hits by John: "Whatever Gets You Through the Night," "I'm Losing You," "The Ballad of John and Yoko (Beatles)," "Watching the Wheels," "Mind Games" (BTW, the word here is "guerilla" not "gorilla," lol), "Woman," "(Just Like) Starting Over," "#9 Dream."
No look at John's solo work is complete without mentioning "Jealous Guy" and "Beautiful Boy". To say nothing of the "primal" songs from his first solo album, such as "Mother", "Working Class Hero" and "God".

I believe this is a Phil Spector produced track. That partly explains the unique and prominent drum sound, Amber. He liked to emphasize the bigger than life aspect of certain sounds. Also, you'll notice the heavy reverb in the overall sound and echo on John's vocals.

I spun the vinyl 45 of this in the Green Fields at this years Glastonbury Festival, whilst Paul was on the main stage. If John had still been with us, I woulda been there to see & hear him. I too love the message & John's gritty voice to deliver.

Instant Karma is Lennon's third solo single, and the first to directly feature his name; the first two (Give Peace a Chance and Cold Turkey) being credited to Plastic Ono Band.
The drummer on the track was Alan White, who had played live in Toronto with Lennon a few months prior. He went on to become a member of British prog rock group Yes. He sadly passed away earlier this year.
Also on the song is George Harrison, continuing Lennon's use of his former bandmates in his solo work, after Ringo's drumming on Cold Turkey and John's Plastic Ono Band album. George himself would also appear on the Imagine album. Frustratingly, Paul and John never recorded together again, except for a jam session from 1974 (I think). That's available on TH-cam, under A Toot and Snore in '74.
Lastly, the bass player on this is Klaus Voorman, a musician and artist the Beatles met in Hamburg in 1961, who went on to design the cover for the Beatles' 1966 album Revolver. Billy Preston is also present, playing keyboards as he did on Don't Let Me Down in 1969.
The drums make this one and I have loved and enjoyed Alan's work throughout his career and was lucky to see him twice with Yes, a decade apart the two shows.
This single was credited to John Ono Lennon. IIRC, it was the only Lennon record so credited.

Lennons presentation to what is probably the studio and rest of the band of Strawberry Fields since it's recorded and out there on youtube, in acoustic just a guy making a song, is one of the most genius things Ive ever heard. The concept alone to make a song sound like it's playing backwards (forget all the stuff connected with that), the intonation the upstrikes acoustically the lyrics the voice the whole intention of the sound, it's amazing and also the first. Two stars in my world shine far above the rest musically, Lennon and Page.

I've always loved this song. I remember when I was about 9 or 10, my aunt who was in her early 20s had this song on a 45 single vinyl record and played it a lot. A couple years or so later she gave me a stack of her 45 records and this song was included, I was so happy. I played it often, too.

Love your t-shirts today! The Beatles recorded a John song today in 1968 called ‘Cry, Baby, Cry.’ I love the way everyone sounds on ‘Instant Karma’ and how the drums, provided by the man who just recently left us, Alan White (also known as the drummer for YES), have a similar slap-back delay as John’s voice has. The TOTP performance is a trip as well.
The drummer is Alan White who passed away this past May. Alan joined Yes in 1972 after Bill Bruford's departure and stayed with them all the way to the end.
Great tune, but Watching the Wheels is definitely the favorite on my list. There is a song from Double Fantasy, the last album he recorded, called Woman. It is delicate, sweet and tender. The video, if I remember correctly, was him and Yoko, and you can just tell he loved her and she loved him. A remarkable love story for sure.

One former Beatles song I would love for you to review is the song "Photograph" which was written by George Harrison but sung and recorded by Ringo Starr. It's one of my all time favorite post-Beatles song!

No, it isn't. None of the Beatles' music appears on the Golden Record. Their publishing company refused to give copyright permission. So rock and roll was represented by Chuck Berry's "Johnny B Goode."

I have loved John Lennon since I first saw him on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964. I was 8. He woke up my heart and soul. I know that sounds weird for a 2nd grader, but it's true. I think you should listen to Girl, from the Rubber Soul album. It's one of my favorites. Also, Number Nine Dream, from his solo career. I miss him immensely.❤️❤️❤️

I would take all my Beatles items to school for show and tell. In fact, my 2nd grade teacher would cut out any pictures or articles about them and bring them to me. Beatlemania lives!!
