I think it is easier getting it off of the rack "backwards" because the way he shows it, you have less grip on the pickup because it is angled away from the lip. You're going against gravity and optimal angles.
When he takes it off of the barbell, it is the other way which optimizes grip.
Either way doesn't really matter because you have to make compromises either way, so it really doesn't matter.

    • @griffdog141

i agree. he also a rack my gym doesn't have, the weights being at an angle. with the rack being parallel to the floor, its really easy to grab the plate with 8 fingers and transfer directly to the bar, the front of the plate facing away from you the whole time

The plates at my gym have three evenly spaced, hand sized, holes near the edge.

If I’m ever in a gym with those exact plates and that exact plate rack, I’ll be sure to try it out.

Yep, last time I saw plates like that was at some gym in Thailand. I can’t remember the last time I saw a plate rack with skinny bars on it either.

This is how I was taught to put in on the bar. I always thought it was unusual. Glad there is a reason behind it.

My favorite part was when he’s bragging about his hand skill of flipping/catching the plate. All he did was raise it to his other hand. It is so freaking funny if it wasn’t meant sarcastically.
