      Both your review and this review has me thirsting for a Nikon Z mount copy. I had a Viltrox 13mm 1.4 lens for FUJIFILM and the 16mm 1.8 for My Z8.
      I wonder how this renders vs the 135mm 1.8 plena from Nikon. Regardless I will buy this in its place.

      i owned their 27mm and 75mm 1.2 for Fuji, and sharpness was outstanding on my 40MP X-H2. That camera has an even higher pixel density than an A7RV - if that doesnt tell they know how to build sharp lenses - what does?

    That extra 400gram in weight is significant, though the price to performance ratio is very tempting. That’s almost the weight of an additional camera body. And that really affects it’s practicality.

    If you don't mind the lack of aperture ring or screen, the Samyang 135 1.8 is a great alternative. It's also like half the weight of this Viltrox and just as good optically as the GM.

  • @youuuuuuuuuuutube
    @youuuuuuuuuuutube 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +39

    People need to know that this lens probably caps at 15fps too, whereas the 135mm GM goes to 120fps with the A9III.
    Still impressive, but keep in mind that the Sony lens was released almost 6 years ago...

    • @Vantrakter
      @Vantrakter 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      The AF-C fps cap for third party lenses is eternal (my camera can't do 15fps though and I wouldn't need it with a 135mm lens). Anyway, for critical AF applications I would lean toward the GM, they can sometimes be bought used for less than retail.. in addition the Samyang 135/1,8 is probably the cheapest option

    • @technodronesogxl9783
      @technodronesogxl9783 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      @@Vantrakter I'll take this for a Z mount please. Sony has nerve to limit 3rd party lens functionality after you pay for the camera it should work and not be crippled to boost sales of your products. That's why I go Samsung not Apple no crippling or lookouts for what you buy. 9:29

    The TTArtisan 75mm f/2 has become my favourite lens lately for how small and light it is, any FE options for a compact 135mm? - maybe an f/2.8 one or something? - This Viltrox is great but it's sooooo huge.

  • @dinoschachten
    @dinoschachten 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Yowza! That is one hell of a lens. So optically it's a clear winner, with all the "deficiencies" being handling-, compatibility- or ergonomics-related. That is pretty impressive.
    One thing I noticed with the playing cards at 10:19 is that on the Viltrox the white "bleeds" more into darker areas in high-contrast areas, while overall it's clearly a bit sharper.

    Hey Gerald.. I actually got to test this lens early from a friend. and one odd thing about this Viltrox lens, and a lot of Chinese third party lenses, the auto focus tracks ok in video as subject goes far to near... However, for photography, the Viltrox 135 (and other Chinese lenses) cannot keep up with auto focus tracking whereas Sony lens hits almost 100%. Did you ever get to test this for yourself? Lmk

    In other test they noted that bokeh is not great and flaring causes drop in contrast more than they'd wish for. Thesy're subjective things, but I think it's worth noting. I wonder how it compares to Samyang, which is cheaper, smaller and lighter, but also sharp on the edge of the frame.

    I hope Viltrox makes a 135mm dedicated to aps-c. I’ve been wanting a fast 200mm equivalent for my X-T5 for a while now, they’re so fun! I have an old Canon 135mm lens that works, but it’s not sharp and has no af or weather sealing.
    I know that if they make a x-mount version of this, then I can just use it, but I’d love it if they made one for aps-c specifically so the size was smaller. They did such an incredible job with the 27mm and the 75mm, so a 135mm would be the perfect next lens imo.

    I wish these 3rd party lens companies would release lenses in sets. And while they are at it Build more Unique Lenses. Yes, Viltrox has a 27mm & 56mm, but imagine there is a Video Set of lenses & a Photo set of lenses in the same line. exple: 25, 35, 45, 55, 85, 105 T1.4 -then- 25, 35, 45, 55, 85, 105F1.2 with a uniform design in a bundle or singles.
    I Hope @Viltrox sees this & can implement in the future. The traditional focal lengths have been done to death, more unique focal lengths Max Aperture 1.2 is always a guaranteed win.

    If I were being INSANELY picky, the Sony had better micro contrast when shooting into the sun. But the Viltrox is crushing it in terms of optical performance. The big issue is whether you need the most lightweight kit, and if so, are you willing to spend more than double the price for it. Personally, aid want the Sony because I have the strength of an 8 year old girl and my shoulders hurt after carrying a bag full of lenses over the course of a day/event. But I would prefer to save my money, given how good the Viltrox performs. Good job, Viltrox!

      Samyang is lightest 135/1.8 with autofocus (just 772g). The weight is simply amazing compared to Sony 135 which is way too front heavy for me and tiring (as Gerald mentioned). With Samyang I can spend all day shooting without any issue (weddings, events no problem). In terms of image quality Samyang is very similar/close to Sony from personal experience as well of my friend and his colleague(one has Sony, the other has Samyang and they did test it as well). Well corrected. Focus speed again very similar to Sony (Sony will win on high speed bodies).

    The problem with this is the Samyang is out there for even less money and also very similar image quality with a much lighter weight than even the Sony (1234g vs 776g vs 950g). This Viltrox weighs almost as much as the Sigma DSLR lens with the adapter and that was not a pleasant experience to me on the light Sony cameras.

      We need to wait for Z mount version. Otherwise you're comparing cameras.

    If the live focusing data was saved with the video like gyro data is then third party plugins could be made to automatically add breathing compensation in post no matter what lens you use. One day 😊
    Looks like a great lens thanks for sharing 👍

    I hope that now the third party lens manufacturers compete with Zeiss lineup and get their competitive lenses at sony budget price for the zeiss quality :) that would be awesome

    Wait, how did you get a “focus spot box” to pop up in post?
    I have an A74 and I do iris photography and would love this feature! I use Lightroom and photoshop.

      I just made a box in photoshop, saved it as a transparent PNG, imported it into the video and positioned it.

    If they released it in Z mount I would buy it instantly. Hope they bring it to the mount soon

    Hey Gerald! Long time viewer and as someone who is mainly video focused I would love to see you add a section to your lens reviews that tests video AF performance. Maybe a talking head and then a moving subject.

    I have 2 concerns to be honest,
    1- where is the intro, are you done undone-ing ?😂
    2- given that the lens is almost custom made made me think that this one in particular might be specifically chosen and tested to be sent to you other than sending another one out of a normal batch that might not perform as well in your tests.
    What do you think?🤔

    I think that viltrox will be next sigma - where Sigma did outperform some of the native lenses for much reasonable price. Great lens!

    This is awesome lens, however it's main issue is that Samyang AF 135 mm f/1.8 exists, which is around $100 cheaper, ~450g lighter, sharper with higher contrast edge to edge, has better AF, and almost no chromatic aberration. The difference in sharpness and contrast is even more apparent when shooting at minimal focus distance.
    The only optical advantage that this Viltrox has is how it amazingly preserves contrast when working against bright light.
    However i don't think it's worth it considering 50% bigger size.

    Uuuuh. That’s exciting. I kinda wasn’t even gonna watch the video because - y'know, lenses. Gear. Meh. But this gets me VERY curious on the rest of the lineup too!!!
