The Florida Condo Collapse

  • It will be some time before forensic engineering teams determine the cause of the failure of the Champlain Towers in Surfside, Florida, but speculation is that the building was not constructed according to specifications and contained less than the required amount of rebar. If true, there will be a major shift in the way construction projects are inspected and in the way that older structures are maintained and re-certified. Costs will be significant, and which stakeholders will bear that expense has yet to be determined. One solution may be highly penetrating inspection technologies look inside reinforced concrete for flaws, but these technologies are too expensive for routine use. Development of lower cost, highly portable systems could save many lives as American infrastructure ages in the 21st century.

This building had ground water flooding into the underground parking garage for years, sometimes over a foot of water. That had to have have caused serious degradation of the whole foundation system, and this was never addressed, other than pumping the water out. The garage ceiling had serious spalling, and water leaks that residents were complaining about that were getting on their cars. There were a lot of warnings on this building, that were basically ignored.

    Missing a CRITICAL factor....
If there had been shear separation between the deck slab and the building, then the failure of the deck slab would not have transmitted into the building. A double set of columns, plus other design elements, would have accomplished that safety feature. The tower that did NOT collapse, had the shear separation.
So, DESIGN is beginning to seem to be the biggest factor from a lon-term perspective.

@@lauruguayitausa Anytime concrete is poured that is not mixed correctly and with good ingredients it is bound to fail. Somehow electricity was getting to the rebar too which only made the rate of failure to increase at a much faster rate. From the structural view that too was not up to standards. However there was far too much visible damage that when seen by inspectors should have signaled a red flag that was obviously ignored. That building should have been condemned long before the collapse until a suitable repair was put into place. Appears to me someone failed to do their job and report it as urgent which ended in total collapse and overwhelming uncalled for deaths.

You mentioned that the forensic engineers had not completed their investigation. Yesterday (July 17) I saw a video that the chief forensic engineer of this crime scene was not allowed by any of the authorities in charge to examine any evidence. This was the forensic engineer that had been in charge of the Pentagon investigation after 9/11. He finally left. I don't think there is any actual forensic investigation at the crime scene (which is what it is being called). It actually appears to be a coverup.

Well , he is hired by Miami and has been blocked by federals .He has a bit of conflict of interests there . If will be a federal coverup we will see depending on it the level of idiocracy in US because it's enough information in public space already to form a very acurate picture (not perfect ofc , but pretty acurate ) . Short version a adequated but flawed design got destroyed by "rain" because of high maintenance costs . The parking roof concrete got wet , spalled , got weak , collapsed and pulled the main suporting colums . Everything else is secondary . More rebar would only prolonged the life of the building , also valable for more punchthrough reinforcements , as long as the deck is perma wet and tied to the main colums the deck will collapse will bring it down . There is blame to asign to lack of garage maintenance but this is in hindsight , nobody would have thought that the garage roof would collapse and worse , bring all the building after it . Most interesting will be the action towards safing the sister buildings knowing this .

There was one older man that survived the collapse thst said they asked for over ive hundred thousand thst he paid to repair the building. I don’t know how many others they had asked for money. Maybe everyone was asked I don’t know. The finance guy said they had 800 thousand in a reserve acct. I would guess it’s for building maintenance. But I don’t know about condos so I can’t say.
I do think this, avd it’s just what I think cause I don’t know. Who would have ever thought a pool deck weakness would have brought down that much of the building? I sure wouldn’t, but that’s me.

I felt a huge cringe when I heard thst creaking noise. It was in the video of the camera inside thst one condo thst had a camera in it. Thst noise Just made me feel awful. I was in a home collapse in a storm one time. Thst moan it made is sickening cause I remember that noise. I was lucky cause i was the only one in it when the storm hit. I broke my back in three places. Beams came down on me. My husband and my father in law got me out but I knew my back was broken. I was 21 yrs old. Thst was 50 yrs ago but I’ll never forget thst moan sound. It is a horrible to hear. It scared me then and it came right back as soon as I heard that on that video. It was only a two story house , fortunately for me there wasn’t anything on the second story above me. It was a exposed beAm room all the way to the top. The back of the house had the rooms on the back. So when it started to moan I had no idea it would come down. It was a big A frame house, only the front rooms in the front collapsed. Fact only the living room area. I was young and I had large rollers in my hair so when the beam hit my head the rollers took the hit and mashed them flat. So I was extremely fortunate. But the break in three places on my back I was still blessed cause it didn’t damage nerves so I am not Paralized. Even the paramedics said so. The main thing is that my husband wasn’t in the house. He was next door. At my FILs house. My little brother kin laws went to tell them the house had fallen. The house wasn’t totally completed. I was in it painting. It was on our property on the family ranch. Like I said I was extemely blessed. They had gone next door when the storm hit and were gettivg more stuff for the house. The storm and wind hit so fast they would have been back in a very few minutes.

We have earthquakes here but still, it seems like I put about as much rebar per area of structure in the six foot high wall around the yard that I built and the code required it. I don't see how even a one story building, especially one where people live, could have so little rebar but I also don't know how much more we've added to a standard structure to try to get it to withstand earthquakes.
