Girl, nothing changes when you get married other than you can use the title to get him to take out the trash. 😊❤️ My hubby and I had been together for 17 years before we got married. Loved each other the same way before and after. You're a modern woman. It's ok to have a modern definition of marriage. 👸🏿❤️
For me, a lot of things changed! New address, new name, new bedroom, new morning routine...I could go on. All of a sudden I was leaving campus early to go home and help hubby clean the house and get dinner started. We loved each other the same but even as a modern woman there is a lot of change. I must state though, that in my first year of marriage I started my own company so...it's not like you cant be successful and happily married.

It's not an African thing
As a South Asian woman, I totally get the whole traditional aspect of weddings. Traditional weddings in most cultures are more for society and not the actual couple. It's a very stressful social event. And the insane traditions are outdated. But you want to go through with the traditions for your parents sake because it is a special moment in their lives too. Just a hard balance. I'd like to have a small "western" wedding with just a few closest people first, so it's more intimate and romantic. And then the huge tradition rich wedding that my parents want to see afterwards.
Same here. I had the same internal arguments with myself until I decided to do it for my family especially my mother and my hunsabd who is European totally understood

There is nothing wrong with traditions.Every ritual has a reason behind it but yes I agree on having a minimalistic wedding with very less people.
I was engaged at 25, with a 2yr engagement. During the wedding ceremony my now husband placed coins in my hands trusting me with his worldly goods. The symbolism is something I still carry in my heart.

It is a Catholic tradition and also shows up in various Latin cultures. I am both Latinx and raised Catholic. My husband is neither so the fact that he did the tradition meant a lot to me and my fam.

I love how comfortable you were to talk about your fears about marriage and what you're expected to do. From what I hear, he seems like a keeper and he loves you for who you are now and not who you think he wants you to be.

I LOVE hearing about other cultures wedding traditions! I was raised generic white American (LOL) and my husband is Buddhist. At the same time I was planning my wedding I was actually taking a class in my masters program about marriage in different religions or cultures. It is so interesting!! I can’t wait to hear more of whatever you choose to share!

My husband’s family is from India and we did both the Hindu and Christian weddings. It meant a lot to him and his family that I wanted to learn his culture and traditions. If I can say anything I learned from my experiences is just don’t stress about pleasing everyone. It isn’t about them. Congratulations!
To me being a wife is simply being a woman who’s married. I’ve been married for 4 years and fortunately they’ve been the best of my life. We do so many amazing things together but I’ve also been able to pursue my own hobbies and endeavors and just had someone there to cheer me on and support me. Don’t feel like you have to change just because of a certificate!

Girl I hear ya, I'm noth Sudanese and I married Scottish guy. We had 2 weddings one in Sudan and one in Scotland we have the dowry thing as well but my dad didn't insist on a lot of money it was just a symbolic amount and when he got it he handed it to me. Hope you guys have an awesome wedding x

I think the attitude you have toward your engagement and wedding as a whole is so healthy and inspiring. I’m sick of having the wedding market shoved down my throat and hearing judgy comments about how long i’ve been with my boyfriend and why aren’t we married yet??? like shit it’s no one else’s business. I love that you kept it to yourself and allowed yourself to have it to yourselves and celebrate. I think I’d do the same thing. I’m so happy for Nyma, I love this video, and her waiting until she was ready to share her news instead of rushing to post about it makes me respect her more. Personally I don’t want a wedding or reception because my dream wedding is not my very Christian parents idea of holy matrimony. And I’ve decided not having my mother at my wedding ceremony would break my heart too much to go through with a wedding. So my current boyfriend and I agreed we’d just go to the courthouse get our certificate and take a month long vacation through Europe and buy a house lol

my dad is from sudan and i can DEFINITELY understand the whole "well what about all your family members??" and having to explain that it's not their wedding, it's mine. i was born in america and i'm mixed with white, so i've always grown up really american where as my dad of course grew up in a small village in sudan. disagreements about certain cultural things are inevitable, but i'm sure your dad is very appreciative of you compromising on which traditions you'll practice and which ones you aren't comfortable with. i know a lot of people wouldn't do something like that for the happiness of their parents.

Yeah do both! I'm doing a traditional wedding so my African family can be happy and invite whoever and then I'll do my wedding on my own with my preferred guest list.
Congratulations Nyma! You don't sound evil at all, you're expressing your feelings. Also, too keep in mind you and your husband get to decide what and how your marriage should look. It doesn't have to look the same as what you may have traditionally seen.

Fascinating fact: "Western" dowries started off as a way out for the bride. The money remained hers, so if she wanted to get the hell out she had the money to do so. That changed pretty quickly to hubby taking it off her and spending the lot, not surprisingly...

I don't think you're wrong for wanting your wedding to be about you. My homegirl regrets letting her mom basically plan the wedding her mom never had. It wasn't about her at all. The good thing about living in this age is we should be making our lives how we want them to be.

You can stay engaged for as long as you want girl (my husband and I were engaged for at least 5 years) and you don't sound evil or mean just because you want to do so much more with your life than just be a wife.
