Splicing a loop has higher strength than tying a loop knot in the end of the rope. Eye splicing used to be a basic part of nautical, sailing and boating knowledge but now you can buy marine ropes, dock lines and anchor lines with an eye already spliced into it. Same goes with rigging and climbing ropes. You can do it yourself and have the splice just as strong.
A three strand eye splice knot can be done in nylon, poly, hemp, sisal, or cotton ropes, as long as there are three strands. Once you have finished the splicing procedure the three loose strands should be neatly braided into the standing part of the rope. You can whip the ends of the individual strands with common whipping and the whole splice can be whipped or tapered to finish.

My Dad (❤RiP) had this down pat. All our ropes had these or tidy spliced ends, and I regret not getting him to teach me. Thank you for this clear and concise tutorial; today is the day I finally learned how to do it!

Exactly what I thought😢. My Dad did that splicing for all ropes on his sailing boat and took me to sailing Trips on a lake . I never asked hin to teach me splicing and now as a 50+ year old woman I need to learn from YT.

My grandfather taught me how to do this 45 years ago, I was 8. Somehow I figured out how to do this about 25 years later from memory. Now I've totally forgotten how to weave the ends. Thank for explaining it like my grandfather did so many years ago. It all came back to me as soon as you started.
Thank you for reminding me of a special memory of a little boy and his grandfather..

The ropes are durable and just like the ones at the gym. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTFxba6lNeHrZaHoY_LXe6ZzmMfaipnwu Caution: I bought the 50 feet ropes and they are long and heavy so make sure you have the space (I do have the space). If I was to do it again I would probably get a shorter version as 50 feet (25 feet each side) is a little long.

This is a great help. One thing I did was color the ends of each strand to keep them straight as I was weaving.

This brought back an old memory. Back in 1973 my sister had a horse. She had some manilla 3 strand, so I spliced an eye with a spring loaded clip on the eye. She used it for years to clip the horse to a tree while she brushed or saddled him up.
Sure I could have tied it on with a knot, but the splice is much more elegant!

At last . . .!! . . an easy to follow splicing video ! I've watched several and always struggled with the content . . . and the delivery. (Especially the yank ones !) This has done it for me. Thank you so much . . now up and running, complete with Swedish fid which makes it even easier. Still have this on watch list . . . just in case !😀

We eye-spliced a halyard back on to a fire service extension ladder. We took colored markers to color each of the three strands differently making it easy to trace. Worked very well. Then we discovered we cut our rope too short. Practice makes perfect they say. Thanks for your tutorial!

Thanks WhyNot. I was really struggling to eye splice a 16mm nylon mooring line for my boat & even the web pages with images weren't very clear. I see so many people doing it upside down. On the fishing vessel I worked on in Alaska they taught us to flip it around and hook the loop over something so you can pull it tight tight. Trying to pull away from you tighten a splice is never as effective as toward you and tightness is importanto. Thanks for the vid

That was very helpful and I have now got the fenders on my boat attached by neatly spliced eyes instead of the untidy knots I had before. Might I suggest though, that the three strands are identified some way - maybe different coloured PVC tape around the ends, as it is otherwise pretty easy to mix them up as you go.

Thanks WhyKnot. I been doing some of these wrong and some correct. Couldn't figure out why. It was the 3rd step. I was putting all the strands forward instead of the 3rd (right strand) one down and back. Finished product put it on the floor and roll it with your shoe. It'll help the strands flatten out and fall in place.
