Mumei herself has said that this song is inspired partly by her own experiences of loneliness, and the visual of her avatar here is from people telling her when she was younger she was like just a shadow in a hoodie with how quiet and reserved she was.

And the video probably goes like this...
      Mumei the avatar of civilization.
She Found out about civilization with no name has gone, no where to be found.
In denial she searching for it.
      Travel around the world.
For searching the civilization with no name and memory of it.
She keep searching until she finally move on.
Move on from the civilization that already gone, and probably will be forgetted in future.
      But she believed.
She believes the humanity. They will rebuild the civilization again someday.
The void in place of gone already civilization with no name, will be filled.
She believe and will keep watching... As avatar of civilization, Mumei.
Note : this probably only me but the searching and swimming mumei is probably the visual of her, mumei searching for lost civilization in this world.
The tunnel represents time has pas on.
The open her hoodie in symbol of her moving on.
And mumei waving her lamp is symbol of calling humans that still want to gather and build the civilization again.
And finally the lamp left behind and died, is symbol of journey of mumei searching has end and she decided to do what avatar of civilization should do.
      Watching humanity and their civilization.

So, Nanashi Mumei is the Guardian of Civilization.
She tends to forget things, over the millenia she has watched over humanity and our civilizations.
    This includes her real name.
Nanashi can be translated as "Anonymous"
Mumei can be translated as "Nameless"
And so she wanders alone until she eventually finds, or was found, by Council and IryS (now PromiSe), and ourselves, the viewers and fans.
Also, fun fact, you can also stylised her name, Nanashi Mumei as "Who? Who?", or "Hoo Hoo", the sound an Owl makes!

Unlike the other members of Council, who were guardians of immutable primordial forces (Time (Kronii), Space (Sana), Nature (Fauna), Chaos (Bae)) Mumei is the Guardian of Civilization which is the exact opposite: ever changing and always forgetting its past. This song very accurately describes the loneliness that will engender, never being able to remember her own past or the bonds created. The final 'uplifting' message is to just live the now and have no regrets for what may be forgotten.

So happy this reaction is finally out.
As you probably noticed mumei = namless but at the same time is her name. It feels like the journey towards getting her name even though it means nameless. There are many interpretations on what the song could mean. Some say its the interactions with her fans, some say its her journey to become a vtuber, her lore before getting into hololive, and many other interpretations. But non the less it is somehow relatable and will surely make you feel something. Be it sadness, happy, melancholic, lonely, hopeful, or a mix of various emotions.
There are so many ways this song could hit you yet at the same time a song you could just vibe to even when you cant fully understand it. "mumei" is just an amazing song over all and as Mumei said. The whole team was what made it perfect from TNK that did the lyrics and music, Ootori that did the MV solo, and Mumei for the Vocals and bringing the other 2 to make the song what it is. It took over a year to make because of her cough but that delay also refined it to make an even better song and made the wait all the more worth it.
Props to Mumei and the team. And thank you for giving this song a proper reaction.

There's something interesting about Mumei's vocal tone
It's... different, but in a good way. It's got this power behind it, yet is soft to the ears to feel comforting. It feels passionate to me, but also like it's only second nature to her. It's just, versatile in any song she sings. And in this song it's used as a power to make the song more melancholy

    this whole song reminds me of Porter Robinson's SHELTER. Specifically that one verse from Shelter;
"When I'm older I'll be silent beside you. I know words won't be enough. They won't need to know our names and our faces, but they will carry on for us."

  • @arcsoulphantom2678
    @arcsoulphantom2678 ปีที่แล้ว +19

The song really does feel like it embodies what we all experience at least once in our life. Call it sadness, loneliness, depression, hopeful or even aimless. This song feels like it reaches the deepest parts of our souls and resonates with that past feeling. It also reminds you though that even in our darkest lonely days There’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and we eventually will find people like us who share that feeling and can truly understand us.

  • @saynay302
    @saynay302 ปีที่แล้ว +35

Nanashi Mumei translates to something like "No-named nameless" or "No-named anonymous". In her character lore, she has forgotten what her original name was, hence she goes by Mumei. Also a bit of a play on being an owl that would say "who who?".
My interpretation of the song is that she uses 'mumei' to first refer to the anonymous nature of her fans, who have filled a loneliness she felt; then to the anonymous nature of herself, and how she will go back to being nameless if they say goodbye; and finally as herself as Mumei, who is here right now and wants to meet them.

This song is such an amazing zeitgeist. How popular it is, coinciding with her 3d debut a couple weeks ago, her performance in HoloEN’s concert catching so many people off guard. Her vocals are great and getting better. Her enunciation is immaculate, her emotions are palpable through her music. My favorite cover song done by anyone in Hololive is her cover of The Forgotten Song.
I’m happy she’s getting the recognition she deserves. Despite her dorky energy, her talent is unmistakable.

6:06 that transition of your facial expression from serious, to amused, and finally to just pure happy (tears welling maybe, haha). I went through the exact same thing when that section played.
Mumei mentioned in one of her recent streams, on a personality test question of how she sees herself as a vtuber, that she “hopes to make someone’s day better” one way or another.
Lore aside, Mumei is just an amazing person who really cares about others, and I’m sure she’s touched many people with this amazing song.

I really love this song. I love how stripped back a lot of the instrumental is compared to A New Start and it really let's Mumei's voice shine all on its own. She's such a fantastic singer! If you haven't seen her 3D showcase, I highly recommend checking it out as her song lineup is incredible and grates some really great guests to sing with her.
    Great video, dude!

This song, MV, everything about this, is just beautiful. Both parts of her name, Nanashi Mumei, can be translated as "nameless" or "anonymous", which ties into her lore of not being able to remember her name and assuming different names she's given, and this is the last name she was given. This is certainly one of my favorite songs in Holo, and you can interpret so much from it.
I want to recommend her cover of The Forgotten Song, as that is also great.

I've shared these thoughts about the song itself on a few reaction videos so this is a copy paste of them, but I like to see if anyone has anything to really add to it:
Lorewise, Mumei is the "Guardian of Civilization." She is forgetful and doesn't remember things well so she names her mascot "Friend", her pet "Animal" and her own name "Nanashi Mumei" literally means nameless nameless in Japanese. It makes perfect sense in the context of how collectively we are forgetful of our past. We barely know much about our ancestors from 2000 years ago and there's evidence to suggest that as a whole civilizations are much much older than we realize. Hell, we barely remember things that happened fifty to a hundred years ago, it's rather amazing we know much from before that. Now with technology as it is and how delicate the systems we have in place are it won't take much for us to collectively forget much of the technology we've built up over the years. If you think about it, how many individuals can produce a pencil on their own, let alone a physical book, not even considering what you might write in it.
Then you can consider what it means for her as a vtuber. There's a blue million vtubers out there and she's just one of them. She definitely has the advantage of being affiliated with an industry leading company, but it's us fans that allow her to exist. She may not know us individually, nor our faces, but like civilizations of the past and present, she can't exist without some form of collective memory of her. So we know her as "Mumei." If we forget her then "Mumei" will no longer exist and will become mumei (nameless). She's in the darkness shining her lantern for those that might might find comfort in her light. She needs us to continue on being "Mumei" and hopefully she can give us some light in return. She's mentioned that the song touches on the loneliness that she has felt in her life and it absolutely resonates with me. Despite technology connecting us more than ever, it's still so lonely for many. For myself, friends have simply drifted away as time has gone on as they deal with their own lives and troubles.
This in essence is what vtubers and by extension, my oshis (of which Mumei is one) have been for me and I'm sure others. Before I found vtubers I never cared too much for streaming as a whole. I didn't get it. I used to rely on stand up comedy, video games, and a handful of online acquaintances to bring me a bit of enjoyment and stave off the loneliness as friends drifted away to do their own thing as I got older. Vtubers have helped to fill that void for me. Even though I'm fully aware they can never really be my friend, watching the few that I do regularly helps to assuage that feeling if only a bit while I cheer them on in their endeavors hoping for their happiness, health, and safety.

Nanashi and mumei have the same meaning as nameless or anonymous. Technically its nameless by nameless namless.
Fun fact it also related to her lore that she easily forget everything including her name. Hence animal for her dog name and friend to her floating mascot.
As a guardian of civilization she comes and go as ppl forget her eventually (move on), but she always there when you need her.

Mumei's soft and gentle vocals really create a strong emotional context for the song. I'm a little surprised you didn't draw a comparison to Porter Robinson, a lot of people (myself included) feel that this song would fit perfectly in Porter's portfolio. I wonder if TKN (the creator of mumei) drew some inspiration from Porter Robinson, or if it's just a coincidence due to similar subject matter and music style?

The juxtaposition of Mumei's lore as the guardian of civilization (a concept that can only exist because humanity exists; unlike her fellow members that represent Time, Space, Chaos, and Nature that are universal) to her vTuber persona of Mumei that can only exist because the viewers are there is very poetic. She's singing of how she does not know your name or face but she will keep existing as the vTuber Mumei as long as You (the viewer) is there, even though she is nameless (the real person behind Mumei) and the people who watch Mumei doesn't know her, she will continue as the anonymous nameless person who gives Mumei life and meaning.

Like you said it is a 10/10 I love this song so much and the mv brought me to tears. A lot of people have said that this song reminded them of Shelter by Porter Robinson and Madeon and I totally agree with that. Love your vids keep up the great work.
Still would love to see you react to Tsuijuku by Rene Ryugasaki an indie vtuber

Personally I love the narrative of self realization within the song progressing from being nameless, to taking Nameless as her name, there is so much beauty in that idea. There is so much complex simplicity to this song, it’s pretty much perfect.

    5:11
    Idk what is happening really.
I first heard this when it was released early on youtube music. without MV. Song didn't make me feel anything really. I thought it wasn't anything too special actually.
But then the MV dropped. and I could watch the MV with translated lyrics, and at around this mark in the mv, 5:11 your video. yeah. tears started forming. and fell a bit later during the lantern and "mumei" part. and again, I couldn't really tell why. something emotional for sure, something not found in much music from what I have experienced like this anyway.

    Love the song.
It gives both vibes of "Sensi - Hallejuhia" and "Porter Robinson - Shelter" but has its own spin.
Also with Mumei being more of a goofy person and the history behind the song it just hits different.

Ah, yes, this song is really beautiful. It's perfect for her character as the guardian of civilization, and as a reflection of herself and many more 🥲
Mumei seriously has improved a lot in this time and has opened up more as a person. This song can be considered sad, lonely, but for me it also has a feeling of nostalgia. Mumei "mumei" is cute, just like Mooms~ ☺️🤎
    More recommendations:
-More from IRyS, originals and/or covers (maybe, Idk. But... you know, only if you...) 💎❤️
-HoloStars English TEMPUS 3 originals, and "Always Tide" 👍

Hololive is rife with character pieces. Reflect, Stellar Stellar, Hiigh Tide to mention a few.
But, "Mumei" is on another level. It is a shame this piece doesn't get more traction..
I guess a viewer needs to understand a little about both the character and the actress behind her.
It is equally a treatise on loneliness, despair and unbridled optimism.
Add in horrific, psychotic aloufness and you get Mumei.
