I had to make it many times on the last part, 2 double stitches on each st didn't work for me, I made it 2 double st on 3 st and then 5 d t and repeat so It didn't look like a little cute baby hat, I learned after 3-4 tried.
It won't work exactly but you can apply the same thought process! because you're working with smaller yarn, everything will be smaller so you will need more chains and more stitches. you just need to match the size to your head by using the same shapes I show here. for example, for your initial disc, you will need to include more rows around to make it larger to compensate for the smaller yarn.
I had a bit of a seam to connect my rectangle, but if you already made it you can pick up those few extra stitches as you go around, so instead of picking up 1:1 you can grab 2 stitches from rectangle and 1 on the disc as many times as needed, or work with and equal amount of loops

Sarah Breezy any way you want! You can single crochet down across the pieces, or if you have a darning needle your can just hand sew them together through the gaps left in the crochet sts
I appreciate the vid BUT why was the side panel part supposed to be less stitches than the number around the edge? I ended up having an awkward gap :'( also this was way too small for my head but maybe that's just the yarn I was using :'( :'( I'll keep trying
