Fangio vs Brabham, 1978

  • Here is an extremely memorable piece of footage where 5-time world champion, Juan Manuel Fangio, aged 66, races against Jack Brabham. The 4 lap 'demonstration' was run after the Australian Grand Prix at Sandown in 1978. With Fangio in his W196 Mercedes Benz and Brabham in his Repco Brabham, a car 12 years newer than Fangio's.
An awesome exhibition of great racing cars, pushed to their limit against one another, a special clip.

@theydontwantit Are you sure they are? Before, there was no technology to help pilots win. Also, in that time you crashed and life ended there. How many pilots died in that time and how many now? The F1 today is a bad joke told by a drunk. You would have to watch the videos that are here on youtube about current drivers and some years ago "trying" to drive older cars. When they realize that they have climbed into a real F1 car and not a "spaceship" where only one button is missing to launch lasers, they get scared and say that it is very difficult. You have no damn idea, son. No damn idea what you say.

I've met quite a few famous people over the years - Alan Jones, "Weary" Dunlop, Jack Brabham, Denny Hulme & Jim Richards among others - and I always walk away from the meeting a different person.

FANGIO WAS NOT JUST A GREAT racing driver but he also was the best driver of his era - yes, he had success and chanced the best racing car in Formula one 1 and enjoyed celebrity success but, he was at the same time the perfect Ambassador for Formula 1!. He created the excitement Motor Racing fans now tke for granted!. For me Fangio ignoring Ferrari Boss Enzo request ( at the half race refueling) to retire as he was seventh in the race - then "pushing his ability to to the limit he won the race to the amazement of Race leader Hailwood who was astonished by Fangio making a suicidal pass!. Best is a photo of Enzo his boss at the finish begging for forgiveness as World saw the best English drivers beaten with a race that showed how special Formula 1 Motor Racing was!.

The more substantial body of the streamliner, coupled with the rain on race day didn't help him in trying to find the corner apexes at Silverstone, so he ended up repeatedly hitting the corner markers, which were oil drums filled with concrete.
That is such an interesting race. Mercedes Benz found themselves on the receiving end of Gonzalez's giant-beating performance. It is also the only race where a record of seven drivers all posted identical fastest lap of the race.

I was priviliged to see Fangio do a demonstration lap at Laguna Seca. He was in his 80's, driving a Alfa the 151 that he won his first championship in. It was loaned by the Alfa Mueso Storico and the tires were correct but had been sitting for a long time. So he drove several laps to warm them up. Then he drove hard. And this was a sight to see, I was at the tight turn entering the pit straight when the tires lost grip. The car started to spin around, more than once. The not so young Fangio managed the situation. No bumps no bruises to he or the multi-million dollar Alfa. If I hadn't seen it iI wouldn't believe it. The best ever.

That doesn't mean he's driving slowly, because he definitely isn't!
The quote is actually about an early rule in Grand Prix racing, that was still in force during his time; *"To finish first, first you had to finish."*
You had to make it to the chequered flag to be classified. A retirement in those days won't get you classified in the results, even if you covered more distance than the next car that did made it to the finish.
A classic example is the 1953 Italian GP where Alberto Ascari, while leading, spun at the last corner on the last lap. As there were only three cars remaining on the same lap as the leader he should nowadays have collected points for a third place. But since he didn't finish, Luigi Villoresi was the one classified in third, even if he's one lap behind the leaders.

Also I love how when Brabham realised that Juan was not joking around, he just went for it lol. Thought Jaun Manuel Fangio is such an amazing driver, he kept with him enough on the corners, where the Brabham was the best, and then effortlessly passed in the straight where the Brabham wasnt so good. There were many great drivers who have competed in the World Driving Championship over the past 70+ years, but even among those outstanding talents there are some that are just better, more complete, more focused, and truly stand to be remembered as the best of the best. Among those giants of the sport, men like Juan Manuel Fangio are at the absolute pinnacle. They were so good that the others were just inspired, and simply had to work harder. When I see these greats doing what they were born to do, it is a truly humbling experience. No one else can do these things, and it's absolutely an inspiration for the rest of us to know that such men lived and showed us the potential of the human spirit in racing form. JMF was called 'Il Maestro' for a reason after all, and I never get tired of watching him show us just why he earned that great title. It's a true pity that there is such little footage of him showing the world his impossibly skillful ways.

Wow,wow, wow! Amazing to see Fangio and Brabham race their world championship winning cars against each other. Impressive stuff. Especially Fangio's attitude - no demonstration drive, I'm here to race. Extreme confidence - not arrogance - in his race craft which was evident to see. Great stuff!

Everyone who has just a drop of petrol in his blood must jump off the couch watchhearing this ... one cannot tell where the Arrow stops and Señor Fangio begins and vice versa .. the Brabham is no less exhilarating in its delicate grace . this has to be the essence of racing in class 🌹:)

wow that's special. i thought i'd seen all the good fangio footage but this was new to me. modern f1 should do a bit more of this like leclerc at the british gp but this was way more intersting. invite legends to do some demo races at a gp weekend.

Both very worthy world champions and deserve all the accolades they get. A bit of David and Goliath in machines, the MB is a mechanical engineering masterpiece with all due respect to Sir Jack's racer, his record of being the only champion to win in a car of his own doing will never be broken.

You wont see anything like Fangio. He was the best driver of all times. Before going to F1 Fangio was racing all over Southamerica and Argentina. It was amazing races like the last few Paris-Dakar celebrated in Argentina when he always used to win and fixed the car by himself every time he got mechanichal failures. The Fangio vs. both Galvez brothers battles (particulary against Oscar Alfredo Galvez, they called "The Harrier") are epics. In fact, the Buenos Aires circuit is called Oscar Galvez
