Get the cat micro-chipped (if not already done) and fit a micro-chip controlled cat flap and programme it just for your cat. Common in the UK, I have one to stop other cats coming in to steal our cats food (she is also a Maine Coon that likes access to outdoors). Lots of our neighbors also have cats that know how to use a cat flap. They look very confused when I spot them trying my one esp. if they have just seen ours come in!
That is a awfully well fed Raccoon who seems at home in the house. I have the feeling he has paid several visits in the past or could be a pet perhaps. He is just too at ease there.
there's a song about cats and Quarantine called "you're in my chair" and now every time a cat's territory is invaded (usually by me visiting my mom) I sing that song when she tries to glare me out of the apartment. Lucky for me, Mom sensibly sides with her human child and puts Miss Kitty in the bedroom.
Most urban & suburban raccoons are extensively familiar with domestic cats, and quickly learn that for all their screeching & hissing, unless cornered, the well-fed domestic cats is disinclined to fight anything near-equal its size, even to defend its territory. Raccoons share this sensibility, so you'll never find them needlessly looking to engage a cat, much less corner them. So the outcome of most raccoon-cat encounters basically depends upon who's hungriest, and hence postures the best for first dibs. While clearly pissed off, like most well-fed & cared-for cats, this one just isn't gonna take risk of attacking an equal-size animal whose body language says, "I'm not here to fight, I'm just hungry enough to confidently risk violating your territory and attack for food." Meanwhile, the cat's fine-tuned evolutionary calculus whispers, "Just let the asshole eat & get out, and curse his ass if he doesn't move fast enough." That's been my experience, anyway, as a cat lover who's also fed raccoons for long while. They both may howl, hiss & snarl, but unless cubs & kittens are involved, are pretty quick to strike peaceable truce. Perhaps the Sun-Tzu of suburban wildlife survival.
tallison, this explains a lot, ive see a umber of raccoon and domestic cat videos and the two hardly ever fight...in fact I don't think ive seen a video where the two species actually did ever fight...just posture and hiss.....what about raccoon vs feral cat?
My cat was almost killed by a racoon. She was laying on the balcony when this guy climbed up the cat ladder, and instead of going inside she attacked him. Long story short: he broke her upper front leg with one bite and threw her off the balcony. She must have traded in at least 2 of her lifes to make it through the following infection.
I know. Everyone here believes that raccoons are aggressive unless they are rabid, not true. A raccoon will attack your pet especially with being out of human site, trust me.
kate olachlan It is better to keep cats indoors anyways. They are safe from disease and attacks by bigger predators. In any case the cat has passed on by now.
close the damn cat door at night. Granted that is a huge cat, but racoons notoriously carry rabies and yes, they often travel in packs. I had a family of coons who tried to spend the winter in our shed attic. They left an atrocious mess and it took years to air it out
Cool Video! Kosmo is verry calm compared to the Situation :) seems like they already know each other ;) wish to see another Video with Kosmo and the racoon as friends :D
Maybe get one of those catflaps that unlocks with a chip attached to the cat's collar. Cat pushes flap, flap reads chip, flap opens. I know they exist.
Everyone saying the raccoon might have had rabies needs to calm down - it's super clear from the video that he/she did not. That said, the suggestions of having a door that will only open for the cat is definitely the best option if you insist on letting the cat out, though at 13 years old your furbaby would be much better off health and safety wise being an inside cat - he's beautiful, would be such a shame to see something happen to him outside.
This is why people who have pet doors and let their cats outside are idiots. This is the BEST case scenario for what can go wrong. What USUALLY happens is kitty gets eaten by a coyote and you never see him again.
I once saw and heard a squirrel scolding a cat staring at a bird. Hoo boy! If words were fire, that cat would have been ashes on the breeze! What that squirrel was saying! I couldn't understand a word, but I got the meaning!
My Maine coon Elvis used to hang out with a troop of raccoons. He ws their designated unter - he would catch mice or chipmunks, eat the head and give the rest to his raccoon pals.
I have seen these situations. Neither the cat nor the racoon wants to get hurt making a charge. So both respect what the other can do with teeth and claws. However, the racoon is always careful to not walk directly toward the cat.
Raccoons carry rabies and are dangerous to cats. You might want to consider blocking your cat door at night so it can't get in. Getting a litterbox for Kosmo would be the right and humane thing to do. It not only provides Kosmo with a proper place to do his business, it also lets him know that it is his home too and will give him a sense of belonging, and most importantly, will keep him safe.
You don't know what you're talking about, racoons do contract distemper and rabies like foxes and dogs, but it's not like that occurs in endemic proportions. I've had many raccoon encounters and never got as much as a scratch. They're not coming to your house to attack you, they're there because you left food out or your trash smells interesting. A lot of people who have the space, patience and love for those cute little bastards keep them as pets.
statinskill rabies are common among raccoons and bats not dogs and foxes. They get it by being bitten by a raccoon or another animal bitten by one. Just because you love raccoons doesn't mean you have to lie for them. They are vermin and carry a lot of disease that are contagious to our pets, rather you like it or not.
Not good to have a wild animal like a raccoon to encounter your domestic cat. There are pet doors that will only open when the signal on the cat collar comes within very close range with the receiver on the door. Not sure how much this type of pet door cost be may be worth while to look into.
Microchip is a yes from me. Collars are cute, especially if you got their name address etc inscribed, but they can be dangerous. I take my cats out for walks with good designed coats that does not choke the cats.
My 48” long, 27 lb Red Maine Coon would have shredded that intruder. That Raccoon may have gotten some bites in, but Maine coons have so much hair, that it’d be tough for the claws or teeth of the raccoon to get through to do damage. But, my boy stays indoors and I don’t have a cat door, so I won’t have this problem.
Raccoon’s are pretty good fighters and I believe cats can sense that too!! My buddy had an outdoor cat that he would leave food out in a bowl on the front porch, and he would come home late at night and the cat would be watching as raccoons were feasting away on her food!! It was almost like watching “Country Bear Jamboree” at one of the amusement parks!! LMMFAO
The cat is lucky to not have been hurt in that encounter. My cat was just badly mauled and nearly killed by a raccoon. I don't think it's a fight that a cat can ever win, even many dogs have been killed or seriously injured by raccoons. They may be cute but they are wild animals.
In other words, the cat just said "Get the HELL OUT!!!"! ; P Funny though, if that were a dog of the same size, the cat probably would have attacked it IMMEDIATELY!
Does it matter which could kill which? Whatever animal 'won' would be seriously injured in process, which is perhaps why animals show more sense & caution wielding aggression than humans; they'll posture & hiss but only go full contact when cornered. Neither wants to risk injury & lifelong disadvantage for the stupid human notion of momentary glory. We could learn a lot from this clip and animals in general.
As a cat guardian and wild raccoon lover & feeder, I've never seen either species attempt physical interaction with the other. There are cat doors equipped with special sensors & activating collars that only open for animals wearing them. Sounds like good solution in this case. Please remember in the 'compassionate' recourse of relocating a 'nuisance' raccoon, many may be mothers with dependent cubs, who often can't survive on their own for up to a year, and without mom are doomed to slow, terror-filled death by dehydration/starvation, exposure, and/or predation. And relocating simply creates a territorial void which another raccoon WILL soon fill. Thankfully there are multiple solutions beyond extermination & relocation. Good luck to you & the whole crew!

Raccoon is so calm it's like entered a museum or art gallery looking at the exhibits.
Even after getting yelled at by the cat, took it's time leaving 😂
You stupid? They steal like thieves and run on their feet knowing that they're stealing.
No it's a thief hiding behind cover
Note to homeowner: GET RID OF THE DAMN CAT DOOR!!!!
They should at least lock it. Raccoons can really mess up a cat. Stupid.
And they are a huge vector for rabies.
