    Jeanne Dielman is a masterclass in cinematic tension, performance, expression, and making all the small things feel so loud.

    While I’ve heard of all of these films before, the only one I have seen so far is An Elephant Sitting Still, which truly a bonafide masterpiece. I was completely sucked into it and I had a good cry when it was over. Hit home really hard. Thanks for the other recommendations!

    I must say that I think your spirited and articulated narration work here is really good! I also like your sensibility here a lot too! I’ve only seen 4 of the 5 films and I’ve never heard of the Man who Sleeps. I feel like I’ve just been watching popular films and older horror with my dad for several months. I watched Life, and Nothing More to break the spell. And it worked. I like feeling that impression of having visited somewhere, like I’ve gone on vacation to a place I liked. I feel a sort of calmness during and after.

    Also Letterboxd has some of the weirdest rankings, there’s movies that clearly wouldn’t be liked by a certain graph of people yet there’s almost no low ratings for “those” films. It’s like regular people don’t exist on that site and that clearly isn’t the case if you read ANY review on that site.

    • @musictolistento1356

    Your comments about A Dog's Will really frame it the wrong way. There are other Brazilian titles on the list like Central Station, City of God or The Given Word that do not attract these kinds of comments, in fact I've heard nothing but praise for them. There are 6 Brazilian films on there, compared to for exaple 3 German ones and the most highly regarded film by Brazilian critics do not even make the list like the films of Glauber Rocha, Limite, Pixote, Barren Lives, The Red Light Bandit, etc. Has it occured to you that maybe people just thought it wasn't a good film? You make it sound like it's because it's a Brazilian film and like people have a disdain for Brazilian cinema because somehow it's inferior but that's really not it. If the 90's live action Asterix and Obelix with Gerard Depardieu was on there it would attract excactly the same kind of comments or Bully Herbig's der Schuh des Manitu (these films were big hits in respectively France and Germany mind you). Louis de Funes isn't on there either, Budd Spencer and Terrence Hill aren't either, etc. I mean there's a gazillion of silly mainstream French comedies but none of them makes the list. The reason A Dog's Will is on there is really demographics, it's disproportionately been seen and rated by the people that would like it.
    At the end of the day it's just a list on the internet, it's pretty whatever and in its nature works a bit like a circlejerk but it almost seems like you intentionally misframe it to make your point. It doesn't seem to me like a vocal minority even. It seems to me like the majority of non-Brazilian people who've seen the film didn't think it was all that great or special. A Dog's Will stands out not because it's Brazillian but because it's a bit like if Dumb and Dumber would be on there and only US-Americans found it profoundly funny while the rest of the world would be bewildered. I mean fair enough, whatever floats peoples boat but there's certainly no imperialist structures at play here, at best just a bit of film snobbery or maybe simply people finding the film boring and not funny. It's not so much to make an argument here. I think there's a virtue in making the case for silly comedies but your line of reasoning here itself sounds profoundly snobbish. It's dialectics really, you sound just like what you attempt to criticise (you don't even really make the case for the film, you just speak about it's detractors).
    For what it's worth my personal favourite from Brazil is "Iracema - Uma Transa Amazônica", a road-movie about a prostitute and a trucker traversing the Rodovia Transamazônica.

      @ahnmensch3115 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      completely agree with this comment.
      Comedy, for a lot of countries, is hard to translate, especially when you are doing references to more culturally specific topics. I don't even mind it being on the list, I just hate a lot of the pretentiousness surrounding the film. Pretty much more than half of the criticism that the film receives gets comments from Brazilians like "you're just a dumb gringo, you wouldn't get it" or "it's not made for you, you're just racist".
      The film is not some outstanding technical achievement, so I don't get people being mad at someone not enjoying the film if the comedy doesn't work for them. It has nothing to do with "not liking small foreign cinema".

    • @renarszivers9993
      @renarszivers9993 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couldn't agree more with "you sound just like what you attempt to criticise (you don't even really make the case for the film, you just speak about it's detractors)."
      I hated the movie. Yes, perhaps not getting all the jokes/references... but it wasn't me, a snob from Europe hating a non-European cinema, I've equally hated some locally made comedies.

    • @mrst3ak
      @mrst3ak 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I didn't really like the film either. Some of that could be because the humor didn't translate well (I kind of doubt that), but in ways movies transcend language, such as the editing and cinematography, it was quite bad. The movie is edited in such a way that it moves at 100 mph. No establishing shots, no time to catch your breath and get your bearings. No interesting shots from the camera. It just feels really amateurish.

    I think that Werckmeister Harmonies is definitely Tarr's most "accessible" film. It strikes a fine balance between intellectual concepts and human feelings, and condensing everything into two hours instead of seven gives it a rare power. Not that Satantango is boring - once you settle into its rhythm it becomes hypnotically compelling, and when it ends it leaves you in a kind of trance - but if we need to weigh time commitment against impact then Werckmeister Harmonies is the better choice, particularly for initiating a newcomer to Tarr's cinema. If they don't like Werckmeister Harmonies, they're not going to like any of his other films, and they won't even consider giving a chance to Satantango.

    The meta-commentary here is offputting. Please just tell us why the films are worth watching, not how people are elitist hypocrites.
    An Elephant Sitting Still is a great recommendation. It's one of those that creates a unique feeling in the viewer. I'd say it's also probably the angriest film I've ever seen. I didn't know the director killed himself when I watched it, but I remember that spirit of impotent fury at the world emanating from it. Not enjoyable exactly, but compelling.

    "cultural elitism"? I suspect that by including A Dog's Will Stephen wanted to come across as this woke "see, I'm no elitist" cinephile.
    Why does he think that people disliked it just because it was Brazilian, or non-European/non-US? I have as much dislike for some French or Italian movies, for that matter, as for A Dog's Will.
