It is more of an antithetical sequel. Braveheart was a mythic telling of the Wallace story woven through with more than a few Christological overtones. Outlaw King sought to strip the story of any mythic overtones and treat man as a very beastly creature (hence the full frontal nudity of Bruce). Outlaw King brought man down to the dirt and mud, Braveheart sought to elevate man by pointing through a historic Scottish figure to the most fully human face of all, the Christ.
Outlaw King was actually made and particularly financed by Angus Macfadyen who played Robert in both movies. He were not satisfied with how Mel portrayed Robert and he was definitely not satisfied that he was portrayed as a backstabber and traitor so he took his own money and started up the Outlaw King project to tell the real story of Robert de Bruce.

@ it wasn’t Mel so much as it was Randall Wallace, author of the screenplay, who used The Wallace by Blind Harry as a source. He also heard while in Scotland, a rumor that Bruce may have betrayed Wallace for the crown. I can not be sure if this started with Blind Harry’s epic poem (composed 100 years after Wallace), but there was something there prior to Randall (and certainly Mel).
This is not a real trailer this is a fan-based trailer in all honesty as really awesome as braveheart was if you were to make the true story of William Wallace into a movie it would probably be just as good!!
If they do make a Braveheart 2 my wife and I will be going due to the real William Wallace being my 17th great grandfathers first cousin. So it deals with my family history. I Mak Siccar
It's a great shame for Scotlands people,they should be separated from Britain, during james camerons time they got a chance but because of their greed for economic advantages they denied independence!!!!shame!!!
