One of my best friends told me that this was one of his favorite operas. Knowing only "Je veux vivre," I could never figure out why. This rendition is superlatively sung and very passionately accompanied! I hear all sorts of similarities to "Un ballo in maschera" and "Don Carlo" - which is probably more due to the simultaneity of their genesis than to any conscious influences in one direction or the other; all in all, I feel this aria to be amazingly Verdian, and would be interested in other people's opinions.
