Come on poeple you would have to stand in there for more then an hour for it to harm you really bad poeple go in there all the timeline it's not as bad as everyone thinks
It's all about the statistics - there is no fixed duration, but the longer you are exposed to radiation the more likely it is to cause damage. They don't wear the dosimeters for fun, though.. if they say get out then you get out.
People forget that it isn't a automatic death sentence standing there , you could stand there for hours without harm , someone could stand there for days and another for 20 hours and both could have different outcomes . You see people reading it with the radiation metres and dont have kits on them , just normal clothes . Like guy isn't wearing a massive suit . It just depends how long ya want to stand there .
I think those Ukrainian guys are used to damp hipster journalists from VICE and BuzzFeed coming over and being all scared by everything. It was probably a nice change to meet someone who can help you fix a puncture on the tractor without complaint.
If anyone wants to meet Guy, your best bet is having an interesting bike or car and going to a few track days. Bear in mind he's a normal bloke and likes to be treated as such though.
Had lunch with him in Dublin years ago probably 2011/12, he was legitimately one of the nicest guys I’ve been around just so down to earth. I remember I asked him the question how many bones have you broke? And he ran me through how many times he’s done each, he practically made of metal!
I got most of my knowledge of Chernobyl from the TV series and a little bit of research I did after. I have a question for you, if you’re willing. It’s been said that the reactors, after the incident, were retrofitted so an incident like Chernobyl could never happen again. If this is the case, how did they go about this?
@@lizzyobrien2376 After the Chernobyl explosion, the RBMK design was not drastically changed, but more enriched fuel was used, the number of control rods was increased and their design was changed, additional inhibitors were introduced to avoid losing control over the reactor at low powers. In general, the safety of RBMK reactors (10 units are still in operation in Russia only) remains lower than that of water- water reactors.
@@KyivandChornobyl Ok, one more question: Voids are created when water evaporates, and all nuclear reactors (save for RBMK reactors) have a negative void coefficient. Why do RBMK reactors have a positive void coefficient? What makes it so?
From how I've seen many former Soviet citizens speak, I'll bet there really were quite a few real volunteers. They understood duty back then, and from this crisis came the opportunity to truly show their love and care for their fellow people (not for the government). They're all heroes for that (again, for the people, not for the state).
The craziest part is that nuclear energy remains one of our cleanest forms of energy (aside from renewable of course) and one with the least amount of casualty or damage associated with it when compared to say fossil fuels. Despite events like those that took place at Chernobyl.
there are webcams there studying animals who have literally taken over the area ,stray domestic cats ,a siberian tiger was filmed in 2019 ,amazing none are ill or dying ,just hope they dont start ripping the animals to bits to study them
Come on Guy, get out of there! Alarms going off.... the camera operator was there before and after him!!! I'd love to go and see the area, not, necessarily the reactor area. Thanks for showing this.
I went there in Feb 2020, apparently thats about the best time to go. Its not too cold and all the trees haven't grown their leaves so you could see things much better according to the tour guide, who said in the summer lots of people are disappointed as its all overgrown with not much to see but trees. But the tours are pretty well organised, Kyiv is a nice place to stay and get around too. The drive from Kyiv to the exclusion zone took about 1 and a half hours. They even set us up with a meal in the power stations canteen which was a little eerie eating a meal and it dawning on you that Reactor Number 4 is about 100 yards away. But I would highly recommend Kyiv and the tour if you get the chance. Its a really great country and great people.
I know a guy who has been there as a tourist, he's a bit of a weirdo when it comes to vacation spots..... Chernobyl, Bosnia, Siberia to name a few he talked about...... last time I spoke to him he was trying for North Korea............... weird
ANYWHERE near the reactors and I would have wanted full NBC gear, and as for reacotr 4 10 sec would have been 10 seconds, the rule is for a purpose.. Would have been ok ish in forest but would have had a dosimeter.

If you'd like to visit another NPP, come to austria. The politicians in their infinite wisdom built one only to ask the people if they really wanted it after it was built. 50.4% said no, so it was never comissioned and is used to this day to train engineers. Since it was never in operation and isn't contaminated you can visit every part of it. Makes for a cool day trip. But in the end it is a very costly museum.
I just wonder, why anybody would like to go there without being forced to. I bet those thousands of liquidators would have preferred to stay away. I certainly would stay well away of that place as well.
If it meant that my family would be safe an could live healthy lives, then you wouldn’t even have to sign me up I’d do whatever it would take. And that’s probably how a lot of them felt.
