It seems like it's rare when one hears both perfect intonation and fabulous balance between the instruments in performances of this sonata...to say nothing of well-shaped phrases or authentic expressiveness. Bravo to the performers--a spectacular reading!
@nimrod793 i am a young viola student.. & i am useing this piece for my listening sheet for the Orchestra in my school. me & my dad enjoy listening 2 it.
Beautiful! This version has to be one of the best interpretations of this piece I've heard. It almost sounds identical to Yuri Bashmet! Sir, you are truly a Master Violist!
You can't imagine more insightful style and phrasing for this piece, and never the slightest hint of showing off or "Oh, this is so easy, aren't I clever." Unlike some "slapstick comedian" violists I could mention.
@12taylorswiftrocks You can play both, but may have more opportunities to play choosing viola. Don't know how old you are or your size, but viola is much more demanding physically because of its larger size. I am a violist who also plays violin. :) Go for it!!!!
This is very beautiful. however, I do not think we should say that it sounds like Bashmet. I am a fan of Bashmet, but murrath certainly has his own thing going on here
@ClassicalHearts1 Check with your teacher...I am guessing that there is tension in your shoulder causing the pain when you play the bass, or stress against the skeletal muscular structures. Maybe you are playing too tall an instrument?

Thanks for putting up this piece, its a good reference for us young viola students
i have to agree with the person who likened murrath's playing to bashmet's. so rich and so feeling. beautiful, human.

god save the viola
This can also be played on the clarinet (I did it for my grade 8 exam), but I prefer viola
Sigh...this makes it easy to remember why we play viola.
@mjwynne01 Funny, I rather think is sounds almost as good as Ori Kam! ... pretty uncanny ..
better than bashmet!
your opinion is wrong.
This is very beautiful, and a lovely interpretation, but its nothing like Bashmet's playing...sorry.
epic, makes me proud to be a viola player :)
