  • Seth Andrews - Our Lord & Saviour, Taylor Swift
    Divorced: Christianity
    CW: U.S. politics
Don’t worry, this episode is not ALL about Taytay - but she is a happy part of it.
Today’s guest is Seth Andrews, a former evangelical and Christian broadcaster who now hosts The Thinking Atheist…one of the most popular podcasts and online atheist communities in the world! The Thinking Atheist is not a person. It is an icon encouraging all to reject faith and pursue reason and evidence. Seth has authored five books, including his latest offering, “Christianity Made Me Talk Like an Idiot.” He also hosts a second podcast, "True Stories with Seth Andrews."
In this episode, Seth and I discuss what’s happening in the USA, from atheism to Al Jazeera, with a dash of Taylor Swift thrown in.

Taylor Swift's music isn't my cup of tea, but I will forever be grateful to her for encouraging her legions of young fans to register to vote. When young people vote, good change happens.
Let's just hope that enough of them will recognize the danger we're in and put aside their reservations about Biden to vote for him in the presidential election in November.

Exactly right, as long young people (well, everyone) are informed and not misinformed when they vote. That's Republicans greatest strength, the fact so many are willfully ignorant, and apathetic, towards their own Gov.
I think if even 10% of Americans across the country truly understood our politics, Repubs would have no shot at the WH or majorities in either House.

      i rather disagree.
you said about young to vote, noble thought.
      not so!
      it proved to be wrong.
a lot of young to vote what? a very old man, with very old politics.
      what good changes was that?
it is never about look how nice young do nice things, like getting high with drug.
      it is about what for.

I often wondered how a gay person felt when they would have to "come out" to their friends and family, the courage that it took. I think it is that kind of courage that I need to be able to tell my friends and some family that I am not a Christian any more. I have only told about 3 people, I just think that maybe I don't need to share it with anyone but it must be such a feeling of freedom.

There is one aspect of "canceling" people (not attacking them) that you need to be aware of. When someone experiences being devalued by others a lot, emotional survival requires that they cut off people who are going to diminish them. Some people would like to engage with people who have bigoted beliefs and others just do not want to be around them or hear them justify their world view.

I had a dream, Taylor Swift wrote Donald Trump a check for $666 million, and he went away, forever, skipping down the road, singing "Now I don't need Presidential immunity and I don't need that biggly dumb job!"
Taylor recouped the money by releasing all her re-released albums on regular "old school" black vinyl.

Love this; it's been a while since I regularly listened to Seth's podcasts, but this is up there with the best of them, and it is not only Canadians who are watching what is happening in your country with fear and trepidation, but we are feeling considerable anxiety in Australia as well, and wondering whether our government will do the right thing should Trump get re-elected and cancel both the ANZUS and AUKUS agreements, because in that case an alliance with the US would put us on the wrong, rather than right, side of history!
Disagree about Taylor's music however; I was subjected to it in a fish and chip shop once, and it was crap (does that make me a hipster?)! That being said, if that is what it takes to put between the world and Trump, bring it on! :-O

10:27 Stumbling across a Hitch debate. That's what I did when I had Covid in 2022! I had gradually thrown off the shackles of religion in the UK in my teens - they weren't really locked, to be honest, it's the UK after all, but the indoctrination is there from an early age - it's just that we're untroubled by YECs trying to control education so you get taught stuff in school so you kind of get to choose which path you take.
Anyway, I knew I wasn't religious, but there was always that kind of Pascal's Wager thing going on at the back of my mind, until I literally stumbled across Hitchens vs Hitchens.
Now I knew Peter from programmes like Question Time and knew I didn't like the man politically, and was I even dimly aware that he had a brother? So I watched and as I did, I heard Christopher articulate so clearly what was wrong with religion, he just resonated with all the half-formed thoughts and doubts that I had had since my early teens when I persuaded my parents I wasn't really interested in being confirmed and drinking blood and eating flesh (albeit the protestant metaphorical kind). I knew I was happy not believing, but it was stumbling over Hitch in my TH-cam feed that sent me on the journey via Dawkins and the other 2 of the 4 Horsemen, then the whipper-snapper Alex O'Connor, then Aron and Matt and then Seth and now here I am. It is so much easier in the UK, but it's truly great to be able to nail down all the arguments. Onward Atheist Soldiers... Wading into battle in the Comments 😂😂😂😂

A suggestion: Let's not just secede democracy. In other words, why do we accept even the framing that the US will
" loose Democracy". Such a hard won concept should not be just accepted as "oh well, guess it's gone". Preaching to the choir ... the ex choir. ❤
P.s. people are often fleeing their home countries because of US intervention actions in their countries. For example, check out the history of Chile and the Chicago Boys. Naomi Kline wrote a book and made a movie about it.
We can not go on without one another. There is no rising without everyone - in the world. We only rise together. No one left behind. In that case that person was the key to the rising. So no rising without all.

As an American my whole long life, I've been deeply concerned about the mass of citizens who vote and have not a clue......truly depressing.

That's a tough situation, for sure. Starting to build a secular support network might be good. Here's a link to a recent interview with a former JW that might be interesting for you: th-cam.com/video/JylDyhu48Jk/w-d-xo.html You're welcome to reach out to me at www.divorcing-religion.com , too.

Yikes, I so sympathize with you.
The JWs have very intense indoctrination which includes *shunning*, a complete dismissal of YOU.
You can still *perform* outwardly and with remembering that your mind is still *free".
Continue with your private search and it's possible that in the future your situation could change, wether from an inward decision or outward circumstances that arise in your life.
      Good luck to you and
      "FORWARD...........MARCH'.

@@rebeccaippolito912 Tons of artist do just fine without their own private jet. It's just the multi-millionaires being greedy.
Commercial airlines have more people in them, so the emissions per passenger is lower. But yes, we should use them less too.

I demand that conservatives respect other people's beliefs and opinions and definitions of Communism, Marxism & Socialism and not insult or disrespect Communism, Marxism or Socialism as often as conservatives demand everyone respect religion or nationalism.
Since Communism and Socialism are unfalsifiable untestable concepts with no single authority giving a single definition,
except for Karl Marx, maybe, then they are neither good nor bad, and more than the concept of legality or illegality is either good nor bad. In general, it is a waste of time and a stupid thing to argue about unfalsifiable concepts. That is why everyone should think and act reductionistically only.

As an ex evangelical and a conservative Libertarian, I lost my faith but didn't loose my distaste for big government. I hate when great people in the Atheist space talk politics (left or right). Seems like I can't get away from it anywhere. I really appreciate you both, just not the political crap.
