The opening chords immediately makes one pay great attention. This is one of the 20st century's great Beethoven recording. Incomparable Richter.

Thank you for sharing this performance--and for the photo which is so moving. Richter's strength and vulnerability hit me in the face.

What I mean is, I feel as if I can lean on him--and cry with him about the ultimate sadness and beauty of Life. Listening to this performance, I do both. And of course, we also have to thank Ludwig.

Wunderschöne und spannende live Aufführung dieser letzten Klaviersonate von Beethoven im veränderlichen Tempo mit klar artikuliertem Anschlag und völlig effektiver Dynamik. Einfach atemberaubend!

The way he snaps off those chords in the intro immediately grabs one's attention. Then comes the fugue, very rapid, but with sensitive accelerations and decelerations. Finally the Arietta, about which so much can be said, for example, the heavenly triplets in the section that prefigures the Ninth Symphony, the amazing triple trills, the strong left-hand triplets containing the melody, all adding up to a deeply spiritual experience.

Great pianists are like great bards. During their performances, they might have fumbled some pronunciation, or not having the perfect accent, but no matter what they make a story fascinating.
