A quick note about the unique station signs at 8:00, they have been replaced! Unfortunately, they were recently replaced with the new blue-and-green design found at many stations. The To/From Dublin signs were also replaced with platform number signage. Also, a fun fact about the statistics: Monasterevin suffered a 28% loss in passengers between Rail Census Day 2019 and 2021. Additionally, this video was recorded with my new phone (Huawei P30) and my new gimbal (DJI OM 5). All bigger videos from now on and most trainspotting videos in the New Year will look (and sound) a lot better! Have a good rest of 2022! - oscyk
Well done on a great video. A nice day of walking (approx 15 miles) can be done by getting the bus to Robertstown and walking the short distance up to Lowtown where the Barrow branch of the Grand Canal starts. (The main canal continues on down to Shannon Harbour). The towpath is in very good condition for the most part. As you can see from the video the canal goes right past the entrance to Monasterevin railway station from which you can get a train back to Dublin. If you have time to spare you can continue for a short distance along the canal towards Monasterevin and then cross the bridge over the River Barrow. Just beyond that there is a branch to the right - The Mountmellick line. This branch went all the way to Mountmellick but then fell into disuse. A short walk along the towpath brings you to the final bridge over this line. Looking beyond this you can see the dried out and overgrown remains of the original canal. You can cross this bridge and return to Monasterevin along the opposite towpath. The main Barrow line continues on to Athy where it joins the River Barrow via lock 28.
Thank you for your lovely comment! If only I had more time, I would have definitely explored the canal. I definitely think Monasterevin is one of the more quaint places I've been to when making videos.
Brilliant video, well done, Great way to end the year. Monasterevin is so interesting with the railway, canal and river. There's loads of bridges in Monasterevin. Thanks for all the videos in 2022, Happy New Year to you
Thanks for your lovely comment Joe! The amount of bridges in Monasterevin is certainly noticeable as you walk around the town. Happy New Year to you also!
Excellent Video and Commentary Oscar!😃.Did many board and alight the Train Service between Heuston Station and Monasterevin?.Was the Train Service busy?.
Thank you! The train to Monasterevin was relitavely quiet, but the journey back was much more busy. When a train showed up at the station, roughly 6-10 people boarded and alighted.
Not surprising it is the least used station in Co Kildare as it serves the lowest population of any, last census put it at just over 4500. Quirky claim by locals is that the town has more bridges than Venice in the area where the canal and River Barrow meet.

Nahh you skipped fonthil
Haha! I didn't put Clondalkin/Fonthill in the video because it would have been too long, but we did stop there.
