Saw the stage production back when it came through Seattle years ago. Did I like it? Yes, but I didn't fall head over heels over it. But strangely, I wasn't all that excited to see the new movie musical adaptation till it got closer to its release date. WOW! I was blown away by every aspect of WICKED PART ONE. It'll definitely receive many Oscar nominations across the board. Both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are just superb. Those vocals are everything. And I will agree with you that Jonathan Bailey is just such a pretty man. I mean, you can't get more handsome than he. It's one of the best movies of the year. 4 1/2 stars (out of 5)
Awesome review and interesting insight, especially for someone who went into it without knowing the musical. As you said, it allowed you to see it with fresh eyes and watch it like any new movie. Glad you enjoyed it. I see it Thursday...looking forward to it.
Really great review. I was surprised by this too.. I made sure to see it in 3D since Chu did Step Up 3D and GI Joe 2 in 3D and was not disappointed - pretty cool visuals in 3D especially the library sequence with the wheels
Awesome revies!!! I have been a fan of the musical since I saw it in Broadway, in September of 2003. I saw the musical with the Original Cast. My expectation for thsi movie based on the past Musical adaptation to the big screen I was hoping for the best but expecting another CATS and Mean Girls fiasco. Jon M Chu did what should be expected for a good musical adaptation, it not only catered to the Wicked Fandom but also was an amazing story, cast, and setting for a first-time viewer. Bravo for everyone who brought this modern masterpiece to life, thank you from this 55yr Old theater kid for renewing my faith in what made me fall in love with the theater in the first place.
I've never gone to see the musical, because I unfortunately, started reading the book. It's one of maybe two books in my life that made me feel so dirty that I prayed over it as I through it out. I'm assured the musical (and from your positive review, this movie) has nothing of the (I'll just say) sexual sin the book has.
Rest assured, it's a much brighter, optimistic and hopeful (think Disney-fied) version of the book, while still retaining *some* of it's darker elements.
Wonderful review man, what a great way to celebrate the Wizard of Oz's 85th anniversary this movie is!
