Neither is correct. The Model T runs what is known as a planetary transmission. The best way to de describe it, would be a manual automatic, if that makes any sense.
The transmission has 3 steel drums in it. One of those drums is the drive and low gear drum. There are three bands around these drums that can have cotton, wood, or modern kevlar liners. When you depress a pedal it will squeeze the drum and engage whatever one it is. For the clutch that's not a clutch pedal, all the way down engages 1st gear, move the hand brake forward and lift the pedal up and you are now in 2nd. The transmission and drums free wheel with no bands engaged, and your speed is controlled by where your throttle is at. This is why I call it a manual automatic. This system of drums and bands is similar to how many early automatic transmissions operated in the 50s, but these were now automated vs being controlled by the foot pedal. In fact, many early automatic transmissions based their principles on the T transmission.
I thought I could drive one of these once. Only difference is it was a 1915 Model. The clown that let me drive it restored old cars. I didn't get 150 feet down the road when I ran it in the ditch trying to shift gears. I tore the front end all to hell, punctured the radiator, knocked the head lights clean off, and broke the windshield. By the way the windshield broke out in shards I could have got cut to bits. steam and antifreeze was shooting up in the air just like in the movies. The car owner came out yelling at me, said I just cost him about $40,000. I just said you should not have let me drive it then. I called my wife and she gave me a ride home. I never felt obligated in anyway. It was his dumb ass fault for letting me drive it with no training to start with. The owner was a real dumb ass.
In my opinion its your fault. You just shouldn't drive if you don't know how. People like you are the reason why classic car enthusiasts are so delicate with their vehicles. Sorry
I say both are at fault. Unfortunately, the Model T payed the ultimate price because of two irresponsible people. So, you took a Model T out on the road without any previous experience or training? You could have died or killed someone else doing that. Very stupid. Also, the owner is very dumb for letting some nobody just take off in their restored Model T. He should have at very least been in the car with you. Yes, the original windshields in these are plate glass! All the more reason you should *know how to drive one* before you take it out on the roads.
