I love that you emphasize your cat's safety and comfort as your priority. This is especially important if someone decides to bring their fur friends along on this kind of journey. Thanks for sharing!
I would attach a large piece of carpet to the back of the seat, so she can keep scratching the seat but it is protected from her nails. You can get a sample carpet piece that would work for your project.
When I lived in my van before I had my little dog and she passed away. Now, I have Lily and she is almost like a dog, she asked to go out to potty She has two places she likes to use She stays outside with me all the time. I try to harness on her when she was younger and she didn't like it very much but cats are so slippery it's hard to get one that's tight enough to stay on and yet still comfortable. As far as riding in the van we ride over to the mailbox and back so I am going to have to get her used to that before we start back up with the van life! I'm so glad that I saw this video sweetie!
I know this is an older video, but the cat carrier should fold up if you take out the floor plate. I have 2 such crates and that's how they can be collapsed. Loving your videos!!
I use horse stall pellets for my cats from Tractor Supply in USA. A HUGE bag I think 50 lbs. is only $6. It’s so much better than regular litter for cats, no dust and less mess.
Same here, I also use the pine pellets for woodstoves. I just make sure there are no additives. I use it for my rabbit's litter box as well. So much cheaper than what they sell for cats. Just have to have the space to store the 40-50 pound bag. Great suggestion Sharon!
I also use the Pelletized horse bedding, from Tractor Supply. It comes in a 40 Lb bag for $6.00. That 40 Lb bag will last for several months with only 1 cat.
Don’t know if you have Tractor Supply in Canada, but I’m in the lower 48 and they sell Pine Pellets 40 lbs for $6. I know it’s a big bag but it’s a great deal and I’m trying to help you save some money…
Emi, I just love your channel. You appear to be legit happy, and just totally REAL. I found your story to be quite calming..... I know that sounds weird, but I've had some similar life experiences, and to see you so free of all the crap and living the life that YOU want to live, well it calmed me down and made me realize everything is a choice. And although your choice was very difficult in the beginning, you are FREE --- well worth the "living in the car" days. So.... thanks. No need to freak out. Us chicks have options!!! Can't wait to follow your adventures. Stay safe and wishing you a magical, healthy 2021. (Love how the world's perfect animal for you found you... and you saved each other.)
Kelly looks very regal when she lays on the dash watching out on her subjects. The pellets of compressed sawdust makes great litter, does not get walked around outside of the litter tray.
I believe all the van cat questions I asked are being answered here & perhaps a video I have not yet watched. Thank you! I have lived with cats for probably 53 years (I am 63) but never long term travel. A tip for anyone about litter, switch slowly before a major move. I love the pine pellet (stove pellets?) idea if it will keep the dust and tracking down. Currently recarpeting an over 5’ cat tree, not easy due to no tools. However, I did discover neither cat likes sisal. A place to scratch is so important for cats. Moving from a high tree to something compact will be a challenge. Has anyone considered a ceiling cat run in their van with a place for a vertical scratching post?
It's the best litter. You can get it at Canadian tire or some building supplies for ~$6.50/ 40 lbs bag. Pellet stove fuel. Soft wood smells great. No cat pee smell 😊 Keep posting!
I believe you that this is great stuff & buy it for every new cat we take in. There are many cats who simply will not use it - period. Some find the smell very offensive & the texture too unnatural to use. I have had very few cats who will even get near it. No amount of passing time changes this. If they’re ok with it you’re lucky.
For YOU it’s been a good litter. Many cats find it offensive & will not use it, period. It’s not an issue of “getting used to it.” They can accept it or they can’t.
Hi I just found your channel recently and I really enjoy your videos, I've just started binge watching. I really love the low key relaxed vibe and where you live is beautiful. So thank you for sharing your life and I. Excited to watch more !
Sweety cats are very clean. And cover their pile. They want to cover the odor. So get perfumed clay liter. The perfume covers the odor. So they end up covering in less time. And less granules pushed out everywhere outside the potty tub Use a taller dishes tub with taller walls. Helps minimize the over throw by her paw. Xxoo
My cat enjoys traveling w me. He has a harness which i use 2 walk him lil. I camp at free canp grds & he's out exploring on his own. But stays near me where he can see me. Most times he just sits w me. He's a "watch cat" like a "watch dog". Lets me know man stranger loitering near my car; he growls n direction of man. At night he can see but i cant see the man. He wont take his eye off & will growl constantly. I leave area than. My protector.
great video!! my cats use that same type of litter pellets in the box, works great. I see a lot of van life channel where they get mice in their van.... well you got a mouser!! ^^
Fyi...if you go to a business that sells animal products for horses etc...such as Tractor Supply, they have 40# bags of equine pellets which is what you are using for around $5 US...probably $7 ish Canadian. It lasts me a year....amazing going from $14 a month clay to $5 a year natural compressed wood pellets. Much cleaner. Definitely cheaper to get at somewhere like a Tractor Supply than Wal Mart. I think you could still keep the bag behind your seat. All the best ~K~
I learned very young that cats are quite trainable. My Grandfather had a Persian that he taught all the "dog" tricks. Mine is trained to stay within our 4 foot tall chain link fence. (But thinks a gate left open is her invitation to roam) 😸
100% priority! I love this! I feel the same way about my cat. I love that u take such great care of her and now we know about the seizures from your recent post. You’re a GREAT Mom! It’s so cute she’s playing with her birdie toy on the front dash! 🤣. And love how you mentioned to always bring their familiar items, same litter ox, SO IMPORTANT. When I travel I take his litter box from home. Once I flew with him so had to buy diff type litter box at the store when I got there. They came in a set of three so I had two extras and I went out another trip (driving) so I grabbed one of those but I thought I throw it away going home and he dug all the litter out of it making messes and he didn’t want anything to do with it and he was mad the whole time. But yes, I take his fave blanket, toys and a scratcher pad or small post too.
I have had my cat for old had her since 2002 losing my house due to the pandemic financial reasons this video was helpful there's not a lot of videos on this topic
Hi Emi! Did you ever get around to addressing the hot and cold issue? I'm wondering about an electric heating pad under the covers... I'm getting him used to being mostly covered with a throw now that its cold.. I was hoping in the heat, one of those little evaporative coolers would work, but I live where its humid, so, maybe not.. I also started him young with a small tote (in the front passenger footwell) for a litterbox, and he's still fine with it! 😸
The harness and leash that works best for my cats, is the Petsafe brand harness with a bungee leash. That way as you are encouraging them in the direction you need them to go the leash still has a little bit of stretch.
@@ThecatladyVAN Whichever works best for her. BJ, My one cat loves the leash with the extra stretch. the other, Callie, gets annoyed that I am following her around. 😸
Thanks for doing this video. I’m doing a build outs for myself and my one cat/SUV and a pal with his FIVE cats and his van. I have planned to put a dedicated, walled off space with an inside cat flap to the space and a small exhaust fan for odor (for the van). With good litter box maintenance, good litter and cats using the outdoors for “business,” I think this solution will work well.🌿
Emi, I’ve always wondered about cats do in small spaces for living. My cats get crazy in small spaces and they get crazier when I tried harnessing them. Months of trying and they are not having it. I think Kelly is special because she likes hanging out, loves looking out window while driving. She is very special. Thank you for doing this video. If you have anymore cat tips or concerns please let us know. The cat issue has stopped me definitely because of how they get such bad anxiety and freak out only to go see vet. Safe travels to you and Kelly.
You are correct. Many cats cannot tolerate this type of life. This cat seems ok with it but she is a minority. Many cats will be utterly miserable like this & it is pure hell for them. Please don’t force a cat to live like this if it will ruin their life. Kelly is an exception & does well. Some would rather die in the wilderness than live this way.
I found you from Van city. Huge cat lover here. What do you do about showers and bathroom breaks? Sorry if that's been asked b4. I think its do cool that your cat loves her harness and riding in the van. My cat couldn't do it. He freaks out just going to the vet. Looking forward to your videos.:) Diana.

Just watched a video about someone who uses horse bedding in her own van “loo”. Looks like your litter. $8.00 for 40 pounds. I’m still studying this option for my van. I’ve been using POO-POWDER for me. TOO EXPENSIVE!!!
Pets...let's face it, any of our animals who want to get outside pretty much have all day to figure how to get out and to wait their opportunity. Cats are much better, faster, and more sneaky about this than dogs. I reckon that either one of my cats would escape within the first day they were in my van unless in a carrier and maybe even then. I also reckon I would enjoy the van very little because I would constantly be worried about the cat or cats getting out. None of us would be happy.
I’m curious of where the cat went when you used to work a job outside the van. Did she come in with you? I’m moving into a van with my kitty soon and want to make sure she’s always ok

yaaasss when my elderly cats started to refuse to go outside I used regular litter and it was a nightmare! A cattery recommended pine or better yet, cedar pellets, they naturally neutralize ammonia in the pee and draw out moisture in poop. I started using that and NO smell in a small bathroom! If I saw a poop it went in the toilet. Two cats, once week I would sift out the unused pellets, empty the sawdust in compost and add the unused pellets and top off. There are no chemicals in it, cat doesn't transport clumps of cat pee to your bed. dosnt get a whiff of it's own ammonia which could cause it to go to a cleaner space and have an "accident". You can buy equestrian pellets at feed stores cheaper but storage in a van is an issue. If they use it in horse stalls to absorb pee, imagine how well it handles cat pee. I say again...NO smell even if the bin is full of a bottom of wet sawdust .

I say again...NO smell even if the bin is full of a bottom of wet sawdust .
My daughter was telling me something about wood pellets have you heard anything about that
Does that litter act similarly to horse bed pellets? I’m sick of buying 50 lb bags lol.
Since you let your cat outside, do you worry about putting a flea and tick treatment on her?
