Stories are just as good as the songs, man. I love hearing the little behind the scenes tidbits. You're kinda giving us the same thing that you got from the Brian Wilson series, which is pretty awesome. I remember hearing about how Wilson heard "When You Wish Upon A Star" in his car or something, then rushed home to his piano to decipher to melody and chord progression (though honestly he probably knew all the chords the moment he heard it). A few variations later, Little Surfer Girl was born. Two excellent songs.
These song breakdowns are gold for musicians. Let us know that you just never know! ( that’s a song title!) People are missing out who haven’t found your channel yet.
You know what, I'm just strolling through my archive comments, and thank God I did. What a nice comment. Thank you very much. I appreciate that. Felt good to hear it today. I needed it.
Dang man, I got on YT to randomly check out what the bassist from Sugar Ray is up to. And then get blindsided with a new found insane amount of respect for Murphy Karges. You’re a down to earth and high talented individual man. Congrats on just being a great human being it seems like. Plus, you had one of funniest lines in the movie Father’s Day.
Much like Fly... a mellow pop rock tune that had a place in my developmental years. i still love this song to this day and play it on guitar. Sugar Ray were a big part of my teen years. This song and album 14:59 were there for me for my first year(s) of College. I love the outro to this song with the whistling... I often have to whistle it out loud no matter who is around cuz it;s so sweet... it felt nostalgic then, and moreso as time rolled on
Ahh it all makes sense now. I made a cover of this song on Soundcloud, and being a 90s kid back then I had to figure out every part by ear. David really got me confused on that keyboard bass+electric bass part. Thanks to you for finally revealing the code on this one, and still doesn't make the song any less awesome!
Here's my short cover, please don't be mad that I totally failed figuring out your bassline 🙏😂 soundcloud.com/amar-hamid/every-morning-feat-fauzi-darus
Definitely my favourite song from you guys and I love the part- Oh (Every morning) oh (Every morning when I wake up) (Shut the door, baby, don't say a word) Oh (she always rights the wrong) Oh (she always rights, she always rights) (Shut the door, baby, shut the door, baby) and the whistling part at the end is just classic!
I remember the first weekend I actually met all of you in Virginia (first in Norfolk at Harborfest and then at Celebrate Fairfax) in 2006. I have pictures of Stan playing acoustic guitar on this song while wearing a captain’s hat. That was the weekend that we were staying in the same hotel in Fairfax by coincidence. After the show that night you and the guys went to the hotel bar to watch sports and you ended up coming to the lobby where we were sitting and you copped a squat on the carpet in front of us with your Corona and asked us “If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?” I said Tallahassee where I currently live. I think I was just too star struck to think of a better answer. (Seriously, I was) You went on to tell us about your childhood and living in Northern California vs. Southern California. You mentioned a cousin that lived in SoCal that seemed really cool because he could be a beach bum. It was one of those moments in time that sticks with me. I wrote all about it in my journal. That was the weekend also that while driving from Norfolk to Fairfax you guys were in a party bus and I was in traffic with you guys without knowing it but you saw my SUGR RAY license plate and literally honked to death. I didn’t know it was you guys (just thought it was some rude dude trying to get me out of his way) until the M&G that night. All you guys came at me with, “Hey did you hear us honking st you?? We love your license plate!” I had no clue. It was awesome. A true moment where I thought I was validated in getting that personalized plate. Oh the memories. I love hearing the breakdown with just the bass. I never realized just how simple it was yet so significant. You’re right too. There’s nothing like hearing that song and singing along to every word. It’s such a high. I can only imagine the high from seeing throngs of people singing your song back to you. Good times.
Murphy Karges thanks for the memories. Each song I’ve seen live carries so many memories. I can’t wait for Falls Apart. It’s truly one of my most favorite songs along with Waiting. It’s a compliment to you all as a band for making the soundtrack to all these great times. Things change but memories are the gems I look back on and smile. So thanks for that. 🎸
