My father told me that his Morton High School Band performed at the Fair. I worked summers at Brookfield Zoo 1959-65. The Zoo rented out adult size wheel chairs made of a bamboo/wicker type material. I was told they had been used at the Fair; believe one could hire a tour guide and be pushed around the Fair in one of those chairs.
For a fascinating read - "Al Capone and the 1933 World's Fair: The End of the Gangster Era in Chicago" by William Elliott Hazelgrove. It's about 1) how the organizers of the fair were intimately involved in getting rid of Capone 2) the financing and construction of the fair and 3) how Sally Rand came to personify the fair.
It is. But those buildings were meant to be temporary. If they'd left it up, the entire fairground would be a sad-looking patchwork of repairs within a decade or two.
My mother went to the fair, the Skyride impressed her. I have seen in the big panorama shot all the pavilions with the Pabst and the German village ready to serve now legal beer. Meig's Field oh my, I listened that night on WLS as it got ripped up, long may it exist on old copies of the first flight simulator. That was my first T & L. I will admit I flew right into Big John just to see what happens in all it's 286 16 bit era glory. Not much just reset. This fair set the tone for Art Moderene and the 39 fair with futurerama at the center of it all. Some of the first "trippsters" drove their bus east to the 65 worlds fair and saw that the future was a hoax and saw right thru it. Every fair since has been a joke.
The adult size wheel chairs can be seen at 1:42 of this film, th-cam.com/video/vTLuTLvmCek/w-d-xo.html The sun shades were no longer with the chairs when the Zoo rented them out.
The murder capital of America isn't Chicago, but it is in Illinois for the second straight year. With nearly one murder per 1,000 residents, this year's murder capital is East St. Louis, IL and has a murder rate 17.5 times the national average, and 4 times Chicago's murder rate.Jan 2, 2020
@@bfan6032 you really believe the 1892 Columbia Expo was a fair? where did those stone buildings go? what about rio worlds fair? it was some kind of event not a fait though
I love both! They both did wonderful things for America and the world. Although I wish that the 1893 one hadn’t been in honor of that certain Genoese seaman. 😞
I have an engraved brass bookmark souvenir from the Chicago 1934 Wolrds Fair.
Loved the comments, interviews and footage...what I wouldn't give to visit the actual fair of both the Columbian and Century of Progress. ..

Good video. I hope they produce "part 2" some day and interview people that attended the fair.
Does anyone know who the last living visitor to the World’s Columbian Exposition was? I know this is off topic, but...
I hope we can create another worlds fair

Just finished the book this afternoon. Great reporting and descriptions. Glad for videos like this that describe the fair.
I believe both of my parents visited this event; neither of them lived in Chicago but would have stopped off during a cross-country train trip.
it's a REAL shame it was torn down

@@lamb0warri0r77 There were no stone buildings. They were temporary plaster and lath buildings. Don't believe the nutty conspiracy theories. Grow up.
The 1893 fair was a bunch of boring Greco Roman imitation buildings. The 1933 fair was modern and forward thinking.

I dislike you're ignorant attitude. No wonder the world is in trouble with people like you making ridiculous comments.
