In the 80’s we had one of them ubiquitous Welsh PE teachers at our school in Essex. He was a star and all the lads looked up to him. He was so hot on sports that he got our mediocre school to the milk in action all schools athletics finals.
If you were good at Rugby, he really looked after you. He overlooked me bunking off on more than one occasion as long as I was performing well in the second row.
The summer we finished secondary school, (so we were all 16 still), he arranged a grudge match against one of the roughest schools in the county (from Canvey Island). I think there was some big time teacher rivalry.
Officially we’d all finished school -but he arranged it through the local club. We won the game and he proudly bought us all a pint in the club house. Legend.
