A buddy of mine and I were hiking behind our old highschool where there was a bunch of undeveloped land. The sun was setting and we were both high I was busy looking down out the ground for whatever reason when my buddy stopped me. I looked up and I saw a bihggggg ass rattler in the middle of the trail must've been 6-7ft long. We must have been 12 ft away from it and when it spotted us it rattled super loud and was cocked back ready to strike. We sprinted all the way back to my car in the opposite direction. My car was a good half a mile away. We made it back safe but needless to say that experience sobered us up for good.

Lots of animals have means of communication to avoid accidental lose-lose situations. Often it's just color. But it can be other things, like a skunk's handstand. Animals don't generally want to ruin another animal's day and their own. Except wasps in the fall, they have nothing to lose so they just get aggressive (the males).
Unfortunately rattle snakes are starting to evolve to not rattle because people hunt them for the rattles (and guess what you assholes that means they will now start biting when people get too close not knowing theres a rattle snake)
