From Season 3, Episode 9: "Kafkaesque"
Breaking Bad follows protagonist Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a chemistry teacher who lives in New Mexico with his wife (Anna Gunn) and teenage son (RJ Mitte) who has cerebral palsy. White is diagnosed with Stage III cancer and given a prognosis of two years left to live. With a new sense of fearlessness based on his medical prognosis, and a desire to secure his family's financial security, White chooses to enter a dangerous world of drugs and crime and ascends to power in the world. The series explores how a fatal diagnosis such as White's releases a typical man from the daily concerns and constraints of normal society and follows his transformation from mild family man to a kingpin of the drug trade.

I like the random plate of veggies Gus took the time to set out, as if Walt was gonna start crunching on a carrot stick mid monologue
😂😂😂
Walt actually should've... I'd have.
Jesse probably would
He’s Heisenberg, not Captain Kirk! 😂
"We're both adults."
*chomps carrot*
I honestly think Walter didn’t just go to clear the air. He also went to show gus that he figured it all out and to show how smart he is. “I know you know I know Gus. Im super smart”
Wow, true
Yh makes sense Walter Ego was very big tbh he always loved chance to show how intelligent he is, like how he purposely told gus how he thinks they are alike when they first met knowing gus would have to break civilian character he was playing to respond lool
Also shows how much he learned of his brother since this is a classic police tactic used to trap suspects, it forces them to expose something, think about it the only way you can avoid exposing yourself for such a question is to not answer
Gus would have to break character regardless of how he answered, he was almost annoyed that walt who is reckless and unpredictable would compare himself to him who is the complete opposite, so broke character just to correct walt
If he agreed with him he would be confirming to walt that he really is the guy that he needs to talk too, so either way walt would have got him to confess even if he didn't want too just by answering the question, I think gus also pepped this and respected the move
@@Local-Vibes4444What’s interesting is that in taking offense to Walt comparing himself to Gus, Gus himself gave into his own pride to disagree with him
@@SangreFriasBackWhich is exactly what walt wanted, if gus didn't give in then walt still would have gotten the answer he wanted, this alone let gus know that he was dealing with an intelligent individual like himself, walt smartly cornered him with that instead of grilling him with questions which gus was prepared for, also shows gus that walt is very good at reading people as walt would have came to this conclusion based on the way gus carried himself in the small time frame he was around him.
Gus would then go on to use this against walt by purposely siding with jessie to force him to cook again although he told walt he doesn't trust junkies lool, shows they are alike and intelligent in same area's for the most part just key differences that separates them, walt's pride a lot stronger than gus, so was his ego, what gus did to force walt's hand would never work if walt had to use same tactic on him
I like how Gus has refreshments on the table. He always wants to make his employees feel comfortable in his presence.
Bravo Vince!
Placed strategically in the middle of two tables where they can't be reached without stretching awkwardly or standing up.
@@kvaka009Its to signal that its for everyone he can't put it on either side of table that doesn't even look right yet alone feel right, and the distance on table is for safety reasons, you wonder why most old school mobsters used similar tables during meetings, even Putin does it lool
@user-cb2st4uc1f precisely, it's meant to put on a facade of a business meeting on what is essentially a meeting of mobsters. Gus' mo. That's the point I was making. But thanks for explaining how tables work.
The only time he doesn’t have that there is when he is angry at Jesse
There are two things Walt managed to do in that meeting.
He told gus how smart he was but also showed his biggest weakness.
Walter was brilliant, but arrogant and reckless.
Mike saw it but gus thought he could control it.
Mike was spot on
Mike was way more intelligent than anyone realised. He was a dirty cop so he knew how to outsmart the law as well as how it worked and where the weaknesses were, he also understood how criminals operated and stayed one step ahead.
He didn’t like Gus but respected that Gus wasn’t like the Salamancas, ruthless and without principles - which is why Gus was able to exploit that to his advantage and recruit him, even so Mike wasn’t stupid and figured ‘better the devil you knew…’ unfortunately Walt was a wild card and Mike knew this wasn’t going to end well… it’s more heartbreaking after watching BCS and you realise just how hard Mike worked to provide for his family and in the end lost it all… if only Mike had capped Walt so long ago
@@dodolord Mike's biggest mistake was his belief that it was too late for him to turn back and take a different path (like Jimmy). His self-loathing caused him to view himself as damned without redemption, so it led him to deciding to work for Gus.
Wow reading this i realized that after all gus was wrong when he said they are not alike at all
The first mention of Walter in BCS is when Mike briefs Saul about him as a potential client or partner. Mike says literally immediately he wouldn't associate with Walt at all because he immediately recognized his ego and unpredictability.
The lighting on both their faces is perfect for the scene. Both men only revealing half of themselves
Also showing double life’s they live.
mffffff you have some good cinematic stincts
how tf I didn't notice this lmao
Wow great call!
@@iron982”bravo Vince!” 😂
The moment Gus realised Walter was too smart to be just an “Employee“
Well Gus knew he would pick up on this, Gus wanted to get his revenge and pay Walter off but of course Jesse fucked it up
Bravo Vince!
@@masterzombie161 Gus wanted Walter to train Gale up on how to make the blue meth. Once he had Gale well trained on making the product he could easily let Walter walk away. But once Gale was taken out of the scenario than Gus could no longer just let Walter and Jesse walk away.

“So are these vegetables for anybody?”
Yeah, like Cranston's MitM Hal would kick in and he would ask if he can put the leftovers in a ziploc bag for the kids home because they don't eat enough veggies. haha
This is the exact moment Walter cleared the air with gus
Glad things worked out between them
It's not funny
I find these comments hilarious 😂
Woah! I never looked at it that way.
At this point in the series these 2 would bang within a moments notice
"and more than that, I respect the strategy"
we're talking about someone being sent to murder his brother-in-law. You can clearly see here how devious, calculative and unscrupulous Walt was/had become
I really don't think Walt is lying about that. He may have felt stuck and tried to take his own life, but the sentiment about what/how Gus did is still true.
"In your position, I would've done the same" we know what kinds of devious strategies Walt came up with (Jane, Gale, Brock, etc...) he was for real@@Redhotshawntexas
Copy pasted from the Breaking Bad script:
"WALT
We’re both adults. I can’t pretend
I don’t know that person is you.
Walt says it so plainly, it doesn’t sound like an accusation.
WALT
I want there to be no confusion.
I know I owe you my life. And more
than that, I respect the strategy.
(then)
In your position, I would have done
the same.
Shocking! This is Hank’s life he’s talking about! How can
Walt be so bloodless? Gus remains impassive. And yet, is
Gus impressed? Yes, we’re starting to sense that."
I have no idea what you're on about @@Redhotshawntexas
@@Redhotshawntexas that’s cool and all, but as I said in my first reply to you, that does not mean he was lying to Gus. He was bluffing, to appear serious and unbothered sure, but not lying as you said. His sentiment about “the strategy” is still true, as demonstrated several times in the series
The way Walter worded his opinions was wonderful. He was essentially making a rather provicative accusation without making it sound like one.
The look on Gus's face when Walt is saying all that is it dawning on him that Walt is just as smart and calculating as he is.
He always knew walt is smart, but he also knows about Walt's ego as mike already warned him and he already aware of it, which is why he says they both are not the same at all when they met the second time. Here he's probably felt annoyed that walt wanted to flex his intelligence and he was having none of it.
"No, thank you. I would much rather parent a self-destructive junkie I used to teach in high school than protect and provide for my actual family."

"My wife with a small baby needs this money to cheat on me and pay it to the guy she's cheating on me with"
She didn't cheat though did she@@user-xl5kd6il6c
It was part of Walt's ego. He didnt want to be just another smart guy in the room. He wanted to be surrounded by people like Jessie who were beneath him. Who he could outsmart and control. Walt wanted to be the smartest person in the room.
@@StarCadet I honestly think that’s why my boss let me go. I was more of a Gale
When Walter first met Gus when Walter revealed himself, Gus was putting his hands under the table and Walt was putting his hands on the table. Now it shifted to opposites.
I wish we got to see Lyle's salary negotiation meeting with Gus in BCS. That scene would've been every bit as intense as this.
Did you know that Phil Leotardo did 20 years in the can?
That's the moment Walter Jr's breakfast became grilled cheese from the radiator
“My brother in law, moments before he was attacked, somebody called to tell him to go home and get his shinebox”

“The air that was once obstructed became clear in this moment.” - Vince Gilligan
“We’re both adults” 🥸
I love how each character's posture is indicative of their personalities:
Walter is straight as a stick but a bit bent due to being an old teacher.
Gus has perfect posture but also has an assertive and impending stance, showing his dominance without trying.
Vince has a bent and forward posture, revealing his aggression and tenacity, almost like a trained canine ready to be unleashed.
Mike has the most relaxed posture out of them all, heavily slouching, almost like an old falcon, observing quietly.
Whos Vince? I'm sure you don't mean Vince Gilligan.
@@wj11jam78Oh he's there. You just need to know where to look.
Crazy that Walter was guaranteed security for his family and would never want for anything again. Yet he chose to throw it all away as well as the positive relationship with Gus.
He threw it away to save Jesse though. Jesse was going to get himself killed by those two dealers.
@@Soulful_Sorrow This is why the writing on this show is so good. When all the cards look like they've lined up, something else unexpected changes the entire progression of the story.
Cause of Jesse tbf. Confronting those 2 dealers was the stupidest thing he could have done and I get he was pissed but it was still stupid
@@epicfan1598Walt wanted to expand the territory and that’s why Jessie wanted to kill those drug dealers and also they killed a kid so I think it’s both
I can't believe people still parrot this bullshit years later. Jesse was the one who instigated this entire conflict by trying to murder the two dealers and Walt had to save his partner's life. Jesse wasn't even supposed to be Walt's partner in the lab until he was threatened by Jesse that he was going to ruin Hank's life as well as rat out on him if he ever gets caught.

What kind of man ignores the vegetables on the table? No man. No man at all.
I like the actor's decision in how he sits upright vs walter open sort of confident or normal lying back sitting position. Gus is hands are almost reaching for the person, hands open, only speaking when beneficial, not confirming or denying Walter's accusations, and open-minded responses "what would you like to happen?". Gus controls the whole conversation despite barely speaking. Walter knows that and wants to clear the air as he knows how much power Gus has over him. Once again showing Walter's inflated ego that he is not simply his employee.
The beauty of this, is that in having done this convo both of them aknowlegdged eachother as being way up par in their intellect. And thus creating a lowkey respect for eachother for that, even still the scene was portayed... I dunno how to describe it
The irony is that he does this to "protect his family", yet he says that he would've thrown Hank under the bus as well were he in Gus' position.
No, he's saying if he was in Gus' shoes, Gus having a valued employee that is the target of assassins that work for his competition, Walt would also lead them to another target for the sole purpose of making noise, bloodying both sides and cornering the market.
Walter is saying he'd employ such a ruthless strategy if he was in Gus' position, not that he'd kill Hank in Gus' position.
This was such a good deal for Walter. If only Jesse hadn't ruined it. I believe that Gus and Walt would have gotten along fine.
Ikr?
If anything Gus ruined it by allowing Tomas to die
@@Finkrathe didnt know tomas died, he only found out after the fact his dealers got offed
Gus would’ve eliminated Walt eventually, Gus was methodically driven and a perfectionist.
Walt would allow his own hubris and personal issues (family, Hank and Jesse) to screw things over…
And that’s why he wanted Gail to take over eventually and Mike knew that Walt was going to be crossed off soon and knew Jesse would too and I guess he must’ve felt guilty for Nacho or something because he went out of his way to redeem Jesse in the eyes of Gus at least. Figured Jesse could still be redeemed but not Walt…
Walt knew it too and destroyed everything
Ridiculous thing to say, in this very scene Walt is desperate to show how smart he is and is already showing signs of wanting to take Gus' place. In no time these two would be at each other's throats and without Jesse around there's no way Sussy Gussy isn't killing Waltar with ease.
And he ended with EIGHTY. MILLIONS.
Remember when these two were friends? Ah, the good ol days.
I know they were both guilty of not having a good partner ship but I think it was more Gus's fault because he was going to Kill Walt anyway just because it was to risky to have someone knowing the existence of his operation without being an active participant of it (he was going to use Walter for three months and then kill him or letting cancer kill him). However I don't think Walter was ever going to expose him.
I dont think at this stage Gus would kill him. As with Gale, Gus knew when someone was sheltered and needed a soft hand and then would work for him forever
I admire how Mr. White solves employee-employer relationships so peacefully and Mr. Frying is such a great boss since he truly respects his employee like that! They are both good men! Love from China!
Nice touch with that "misspelling" of a name. No1'd suspect anything...
He would never threaten his wife, son or unborn daughter.
Love from China? lol
“he’ll live”
Walt almost sounds disappointed
If I were in his shoes I would have never move against Gus. You get 15 million, he gets 6 times more than that. But he also takes all the risks. Distribution, cartel, DEA, Salamancas, other rivals etc. We all thought Walt's a genius but moving against Gus was a downright dumb move. Mike was right about Walt.
He was forced to do so, After Walt saved Jesse in the final episode of Part Three, Walt killed Gayle, In Part 4, the situation became tense between Walt and Gus, Gus kidnapped Walt, threw him into the desert, and threatened to kill his family
6x that? Walter and Jesse made 1.2 million with 38 pounds of blue. Gus was making over 6 million for every 200 pounds Walter made. For the whole year, gus wouldve made over 300 million. (extremely rough estimates)
Wasn’t Walt’s fault at all, Gus wanted him dead after he killed those two guys on the road.
It was never about the money. Walt is a lion who wants to devour everyone. Gus is just another lion looking to claim the throne. Breaking Bad is Game of Thrones in a lot of ways. Gus, Walt, Hector, and others are all looking to come out on top as THE man.
love these!
What a wholesome conversation between two businessman who respect each other. I’m sure they will build a long and fruitful partnership together 😊
Really when you go back and watch it again after hearing Walt admit to Skylar why he did it, it was always clear. Walt could've easily settled down and been earning millions quietly, keep his family, keep Hank, let "Hiesenberg" fade into obscurity. He just wanted to chase the thrill.
This is where Walter White gave the German industrial air filter to Gus.
This is when Walt realized how close he truly was to death and how little control he truly has in this business.
This is the exact moment when Walt decided to lay his cards on the table 😂
Walt just did this whole thing to flex
1:42 face half lit. Wonder if that would come up again. 🤷🏾♂️
This is the moment the air became less polluted between Walt and Gus
This is the exact moment when Walt became one of Gus’s elite employees.
It was definitely not about money, it was much more, things were getting out of hand for both of them, Gus just knew how to play it well.
This video is 99.1% pure.
In the breaking bad universe, everyone is an absolute genius. Someone could turn their head slightly to the left and Walt’s eyes will burst open while laying in his bed somewhere as he realized the entire backstory of that person simply by how they turned their head
If I were Gus, I would say "Shouldn't you thanks me for saving your and your brother-in-law life?"
Walt had such a good deal
This is such a great scene for both characters. Walt shows just how smart he can be, figuring out and laying out exactly what Gus did, and yet Gus is not rattled whatsoever, at 3:18 he immediately answers Walt’s question and completely sidesteps confirming, denying, or even acknowledging Walt’s prior monologue.
If Jesse didn’t fuck this all up Walt & Gus probably wouldn’t of gone to war with eachother although the other alternative is Gus could’ve still had gale learn from Walt & kill Walt anyways
Imagine if Walt had just accepted Gus’ offer and begun Jesse’s mentorship with Mike sooner…
Walt telling his ruthless drug lord employer that he (a cook who should be uninvolved in any other operation) would also strategically have people killed in order to gain an advantage is certainly a move.
He, uh... he did. He did do that. Later in the show. He orchestrated the murder of 11 people all at the same time. In prison.
@@anonymone453 I’m not saying he wouldn’t, i’m saying that telling Gus he would kill him if it furthered his interests is a move that likely contributed (along with other events) to his deteriorating stability in his position. Walt says this because he wants to swing his dick around in front of Gus, who he clearly wants to be. It just feels like one of the many moments where Walter shoots himself in the foot because of his ego.
Far more importantly, that he knows his super secret big plan and has the comprehensive ability to figure out things he shouldn't and is also not easy to manipulate as a result
@@anonymone453 I’m saying that Gus can easily interpret this as Walt saying he’d kill him (or any of his henchmen) if they got in his way. Not something you want to say to GUSTAVO FRING!!!

Probably my favorite part of this is that Walter doesn't even have the full picture. He thinks Gus did this to cut out his competition. No, what Gus has done is make the opening move in his final gambit against the cartel, motivated not by a drop of business sense but pure hateful revenge.

As always Walt can't miss a change to let people know "i'm smarter them you", what a pathetic guy.
This is the moment the air became clear.
He was just about to be killedmd. He then eventually kills Gus
Walter saying “In your position, I wouldve done the same” is him basically implying hes smarter than Gus. Gus never wanted or needed his respect, just for Walt to do his job.
No. He is not implying to be smarter. Just that he is aware of his surrounding and knows he owes Gus his life
