A friend in the military was once assigned to test the security of an ordnance storage facility. Made it all the way in and out again using a Hi-vis and a fake inspector Identity card that had a photograph of a chimpanzee.

Fun fact: House cats are desert animals with a body temperature of around 100f. They don’t like being cold because of this. They will adapt to colder, but will take any chance they can to snuggle up to warm things. This is also one of the reasons they like small, easy to keep warm spaces to nap in.
I knew a guy that had a water cooled work computer that was always on. He used the radiator from it to warm a cat box. That solved 2 problems. His cat now had a warm place to nap and because his cat wasn’t sleeping on his computer, he had less hair to clean out of it.

I had an external water tower cooling solution for my pc for a time (cools on same principle as a swamp cooler), After a few months i noticed my temps while still safe were about 7c higher then when i first set it up, pulled the water block apart to find cat hair entrenched, restricting but not fully blocking(yet) flow in the copper fins of the water block, I ordered a 3 120mm fan rad the next paycheck.

A friend of mine with 4 long hair cats had that clogged power supply (among MANY other things) problem with his PC's as well...which is a serious problem for his since he's a Work form Home Programmer by profession...
He ended up solving the cats on the tower problem by going to a local Welding Shop, and asking them to make a very special enclosure for him...
Now all of his PC Towers sit inside a cage made of barbed wire woven together into a box just lager than the Tower and welded together so even if something does get dropped on it, it won't deform and scratch or puncture the Tower...
All 4 cats very quickly learned to find another warm spot to snooze, though my friend did have to deal with some unhappy fuzzballs far a few days...he got some meat processor's chain mail anti-cut gloves for when he had to brush them daily for a while...it was that or have his wrists flayed to the bone each time the brush got near a cat...
    😄😁😆😅😂🤣

We have used a low power heating pad as a decoy for the cat. My friend uses an old computer that doesn’t work but you can get it to turn on which makes it warm. There are ways I tell you.

The "clipboard trick" really works. I first learned it in my Navy hitch aboard ship. I volunteered for "Duty Divisional Inventory Petty Officer". When I got tired of working on radios (I was UHF tech) , I'd grab my inventory clipboard and stroll through the ship, "checking inventory". I was also "test equipment PO", and had the key to the test equipment compartment, as both jobs dovetailed nicely. Came in handy when the others were grabbed for hauling supplies aboard and other working parties.
Later in my state IT career, I again got the gig as "Property Custodian" keeping track of inventory. My department had people and teams on about half the building's 17 floors. Lots of room to roam when I got bored programming.
I loved the Dilbert comics, and learned a lot of techniques for dodging boring work details. 😎

I worked on a friend's computer because, "It just stops running after a few minutes." Open it up and it was full of cat hair. On my desktop I tape gauze in front of the air intake. It traps any hair before it can get in. It's easy to see when it needs changing. Once a year I give it a deeper clean.

Dressing Down the Commanding General: I've done similar to an XO. And "Permission to speak freely" is exactly as you described. Just because he's a General doesn't mean you (as a technician) aren't responsible to use your positional authority to "Politely" advise that what you are being asked to do is beyond the pail.
And it's not just cats and dogs... If you keep your tower on a carpeted floor (or out in your woodshop,) it's a good idea to blow it out every 6 months or so (I actually use a Yard blower, just keep the business end outside the plane of the cover or you will end up having the static buildup in the yard-blower frying your PC)

I had a similar thing happen when I was in the Marine Corps. I worked security at a Scif and a Col. walked in with his group of Maj. and said he had a meeting to go to and need to be escorted in. No problem let me look you up….he wasn’t allowed in the building. When I told him this he raised his voice at me and I calmly stood up looked him in the eyes and told him to leave or the police would be there in under a minute. (I had a great working relationship with the police on that base). He screamed he wanted to talk to somebody with higher rank than a lance corporal (E-3) so I brought out the gunnery sergeant (E-7) who told him the same thing. He was getting mad that he wasn’t getting his way and as he threatened me with a court martial (he didn’t actually have the power to do so) the general and the civilian leader walked out and heard him throwing his fit. He was promptly forced to apologize to me and told to write an essay on why you don’t harass other Marines. I don’t know if he ever actually wrote the essay but he did leave shortly thereafter and I didn’t see him again.

Once when I was at my last job, one of my coworkers, who had a stand alone printer, suffered a paper jam. She pulled out the paper tray and noticed red ink on the paper. Thinking that that was kind of odd and her printer may be shot, she shoves back in again to remove the ink cartridge. Then I hear a blood curdling scream as she dropped it on her desk and ran out of the office. Our other coworker follows her to see if she's okay and I inspect the ink cartridge. Turns out, a mouse was on the paper tray and got its head caught in the paper picker. The body was hanging off the bottom of the ink cartridge as it's all connected and comes out in one piece. She HATES rodents and completely lost it when she saw mouse hanging down. I had to take the assembly apart to remove the body and clean it. Then I replaced some of the paper in the tray and told her it was all done. It still took her another half hour to even return to her desk. She never lived it down!

Just to talk to him without going through chain of command will get you kicked from the base. But noOOOOOoo, this guy fucking dressed HIM down like it was his little brother who didn't deserved to be yelled at, but reminded of the consequences of leaking TS/SCI information to the internet inside a SCIF.
