Because he wasnt a Bowie or Bon Jovi. Unfortunately for american audiences of alt rock or new wave at the time called college radio. Big Hair-bands or Def Leppard or Van Halen or even twisted sister ruled the American airwaves. I didnt even know Lou existed until about 5th grade 1982 when I heard walk on the wild side for the very 1st time.I was like wow. a whole new world opened up.
Came out 39 years ago today. Worked a record shop in downtown Toronto. Started most mornings playing this. Never thought we’d grow old. This was a non-hit that everyone knew and loved. One exception; Lou Reed, who hilariously (and predictably) declared it, “the worst song I ever wrote.”
Hmm, "foot tapping" and Lou Reed seem to be strange bedfellows to me. While listening to Lou, I personally prefer gazing at the moon after shooting up some gear I bought from a transexual midget.
the amazing thing about Lou ist hat whether it's this type of song or something like "Heroin", they are both obviously written by him and are equally as good for what they set out to do.
Godamn, I miss Lou Reed ....or Mr. Laurie Anderson. I was forever years old when I found out they were married. It was just after Lou Reed died too early from cancer that I heard he was married to Laurie Anderson, one of my favourite musicians ever. :{
Well crafted, tightly shot video with Lou showing some dance moves at the end. I wish He made more videos from his New Sensations album like "Turn to me" "High in the City" and "My friend George"
in a time where Springsteen, Adams, Lewis, Cougar, Bowie, Stewart dominated the charts, even the great Lou needed to sell records and he get on the train of radio songs
Goes to show you don't FALL in love. You GROW in love. Don't think of love as finding the best deal on the market. Don't dwell on unrealistic expectations. There are going to be imperfections, differences, arguments. And breaking out of your comfort zone can be healthy.
One of my favourites from my growing teenage era. Dedicating this to one of my enduring school crush.....love you NATALIE, forever and ever my no.1 babe.
It is a measure of Lou Reed's talent that he can play three chords for four minutes and you were utterly entranced the entire time.
Why this wasn't a billboard Top 10 Hit is beyond me
Me too bud, me too.
Probly the phone ringing in the beginning...irritating.
@@SuzanneHall-f7d that's not on the album version,duh

MTV blew this song up. Suzanne is adorable, the riff and swing contagious.
One of my favorites, catchy, you can't help tapping your foot to this
Hmm, "foot tapping" and Lou Reed seem to be strange bedfellows to me. While listening to Lou, I personally prefer gazing at the moon after shooting up some gear I bought from a transexual midget.

in a time where Springsteen, Adams, Lewis, Cougar, Bowie, Stewart dominated the charts, even the great Lou needed to sell records and he get on the train of radio songs
Plus, it's a really good song (and album)
You mentioned Bowie too, which launched Lou Reed's solo career to the top
Yes early 80s.brilliant music
Springsteen appears on one of Lou’s major masterpieces: Street Hassle.
@@zackzallie8735 and a lot of people say, Lou launched Bowies as well
Lou is simply the best, i love you lou!!!!!!!!
I would never have heard this great song if MTV hadn't been such a legit source of great new music back in the day.

I've been an early Reed/VU fan my entire adult life. I can't wait to go down this bizarre late 80s/early 90s rabbit hole.
Yeah, this is up there with Foggy Notion. Great Rock & Roll. What its all about.

I prefer fast- tempo songs like this amazing one. Lou Reed hits every note.

Am I the only one who sees the motorcycle and hears his voice in my head: "Don't settle for walkin"?
Hard to imagine this is the same guy that did The Black Angels Death Song
And Metal Machine Music, Lulu and Sweet Jane.
Lou mellowed a lot over the years, a wise and wonderfully complex guy
