Growl is became the national anthem in Korea. This song is timeless. Well, most of EXO songs are. I guess just like LoveShot, its most popular.
This song is very famous especially among teenagers because of the lyrics, and at that time they performed this song wearing school uniforms.I think exo was the first group performed with school uniform style.That made them so unique.Wearing school uniforms became a trend among idols at that time because of exo(may be i'm wrong)

It was beyond massive back in the day...there were dance challenges around the world, on the streets of Russia, France, China, Argentina, the States, you name it....this is before TikTok was invented. College campuses organized dance covers in huge groups outside on the streets in front of their schools, with tons of on-lookers, and they'd post them online, it was a mega hit and for the MAMA'S (Mnet Asian Music Awards) their first time out for a live performance on the biggest awards show in Asia (as a nominee, like all nominees) Exo as a young, new group, won "Album of the Year", beating out well established artists...a grand achievement for a newcomer...and they continued to win "Album of the Year" for 5 years straight, solidifying the fact that their title tracks were very big hits each year...yes, these awards are not American awards, but from "Growl" on, they became iconic regardless, worldwide, and were in high demand in countries that wanted concerts.
SM did not want to promote them in the US, much like the journey Bts took. Exo were stretched to the limit with their yearly schedules as it is at the time, had their share of controversies hitting them at the same time, and wouldn't have had the time to promote in the US...but it didn't make a difference in the amount of fans that were generated in the US...back in the day, it might have not been the right time to promote an Asian artist without serious shade...kpop wasn't a genre that would've been easily accepted back then as it is today. But it didn't stop Exo from touring the States as well as the world, and that's how they garnered their legendary status. No American awards needed, they were making their mark as an Asian artist regardless. And busy af......

The 'who's this?' rapper was Kai. Although Chanyeol is the main rapper, when they began, Kai had a lot of rap parts, he's very good. Over time Kai has got more and more confident with his vocals so that now he does more vocals and Sehun does more rap with Chanyeol.
As you discovered, the performance version of EXO's "Growl" is a one take video, which means that it was shot all in one take without any cuts or edits. However, although it is a one take video, this does not mean they used the very first take, it just means that every time anyone made a mistake they had to start all over again from the very beginning. While filming the one take MV they had to dance the choreography about 7 times and this was the take the director and producer decided to use. They actually danced this choreography for the filming of this MV until they physically could not do it anymore.
But not even this take was technically "perfect." If you notice, Kai drops the hat in the middle of the dance in the Korean version and he smoothly bends down and picks it up. (The stealing of the hat is actually part of the choreography.) He needed the hat at the end. But because it was done so effortlessly that most people don't even notice the mistake, or assume it's just part of the choreography, they decided to use this footage anyway.
And if you watch the Mandarin version, if you look closely, you will see Suho steps on Sehun's foot. :D.
In the beginning of the performance MV you start out by seeing 6 of the members and as the camera spins around you see the other 6 members. In the Korean version, you see the EXO-K (Korean) members featured first in the two groups. and if you watch the EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) version, you will see the EXO-M members featured more prominently. (Anything that takes place before 2014, you will see all 12 members involved.)
Yes, there were several rappers featured in "Growl" because there are multiple main, lead and sub-rappers in EXO. The way EXO was originally designed when they were OT12 was that each member in EXO-K has/had a partner in EXO-M that fills the same role in their respective group. For example, Chanyeol is the main rapper in EXO-K and Kris was the main rapper in EXO-M; Sehun is the lead rapper in EXO-K and Xiumin is the lead rapper in EXO-M; Tao was also a rapper/vocalist in EXO-M, however, his vocal counterpart was Suho, who is a lead vocalist in K (I'm not sure how these two really work together because Tao is more of a rapper and Suho is a vocalist, but because they are the odd men out, they were put together); Baekhyun is the main vocalist in K and Chen is the main vocalist in M; D.O. is the other main vocalist in K and Luhan was the other main vocalist in M; and Kai is the main dancer in K and Lay is the main dancer in M.
However, what is even more impressive about "Growl", is the fact that they filmed 4 versions of the "Growl" MV, so not only did they have to perfect the dance in the Korean performance version, but they also had to do it again in the Mandarin version and then again in both the 2nd MV versions. And it wasn't like they could use the same footage because the Korean and Mandarin versions aren't exactly the same -- the EXO-M and EXO-K members had different parts in each of the MVs -- so that just adds another element to this.
EXO actually filmed 5 different videos for the song "Growl." There is still one more video that was released as part of their "Wolf" and "Growl" promotions. There is a drama video that combines their two songs "Growl" and "Wolf" and it's like a mini K-drama that is more like a movie or TV show with a complete story and the members playing characters. If you notice, the camera movements are actually part of the choreography, because the camera is another character in the performance. The camera is supposed to represent the girl that they are singing to. So that is why they are looking at the camera so intensely because they are trying to get the girl's attention. They are each trying to impress her with their moves.
If you look up the English translation of the lyrics for "Growl," you will see they are pretty much acting like a wolf or beast, that can no longer control themselves around the girl and they are warning her to be careful because all she does is make them want to growl and grab her and possess her, etc. "I’m warning you just in case (listen carefully)

As mentioned before, the "girl" that EXO is always singing about and you sometimes see in their MVs is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life and that is why the members are always rescuing or protecting the girl, etc. And why all their songs are about being in love with a girl or being controlled by the power of the girl, such as in "Overdose" for example. Or how they talk about knowing they are bad news for the girl but they want her anyway and they can't help it, but in the end they know they might destroy her -- as they say in "Monster," etc. etc. When you think of the girl as the heart of the Tree of Life the mystery begins to unfold even more.
EXO got so good at this choreography that they were able to perform the whole thing live on award shows and music programs just like they did in the MV while singing live as well. "Growl" and their one take performance is what launched EXO into superstardom and it's what made them the most popular group in Korea. It's one of the reasons why the government has given EXO the title of Korea's national Idols.
However, "Growl" came out in 2013 about a year after EXO debuted, and up until that point EXO weren't very well known or popular. When they first debuted, many people called them "SM's biggest mistake." Because the concept of them being aliens from Planet Exo and the fact that they were designed specifically to debut in both Korea and China and several foreign Chinese members were chosen specifically to make up their own sub-unit, etc. many people had a hard time understanding how EXO would ever be successful. The group started out being branded as SM's first failure, and they thought Lee SooMan (the founder of SM) was crazy for coming up with the group.
But when the one take video for "Growl" was released, everyone began to take notice. This video was pretty groundbreaking, no group had done a one take video quite like this and it proved to the mainstream audiences that SM really did know what they were doing. Now everyone in Korea and around the world knows EXO and they have become one of the most popular groups that are one of the biggest money-makers for SM. "Growl" has become what they are most known for. EXO even performed this song at the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in 2018, and it was one of the theme songs that could be heard throughout the Olympics that year.

The rap part in order in the MV were "E.X.O" by Sehun, followed by Chanyeol, Kai and Kris Wu. Now Kris part is sang by Sehun. While kris part in Wolf is sang by Chanyeol. The one you confused with Lay is Tao and the one with pink hair is Luhan.
I enjoy the live versions of any of the songs recorded during ot12 better cause, as someone that been with EXO since 2011, I don't like listening to the ex members. Too much pain lived because of them.

I like the hip hop feel of the song which is completely different to other songs. I also do like the instrumental. It seems poppy and really like how it is upbeat at some parts and then slow at others. The chorus is pretty catchy especially the “Na eureureong eureureong eureureong dae” part which is really catchy. .

GROWL is the hit song of EXO just a year after their debut. This song made them big in South Korea. This was a “one shot Music Video”, them doing it first in kpop industry plus EXO also popularized the school uniform thing. They’re indeed a trendsetter. Growl also is THE MOST COVERED KPOP SONG since its release up till now. The reason why Growl became the National Anthem. Name it, from survival shows to year-end music show concerts to award shows, a lot of them boy groups even girl groups covered this song. EXO’s songs really are timeless. Thank you for this reaction.
