  • The Harley Davidson Softail Fat Boy is a motorcycle that I considered for a while when I was shopping for a motorcycle. I ended up with the 2018 Heritage Softail and do not regret my purchase. I wanted to hop on the 2020 Fat Boy and circle back to when I was comparing these bikes and give my current thoughts. This is NOT really a thorough motorcycle review but just some opinions and discussion about why I ended up going with the Heritage.

The key to steering the Fat Boy is counter steering. It handles very well when that technic is used. You are missing out on how the bike really feels and handles if your not counter steering. So give it a try the next time you test ride a Fat Boy and I’m sure you will enjoy it and have a different point of view.

Did a demo this last year and it was fun to ride. Agree with you on turning as it was definitely a difference compared to others, but you’d get used to it.

I really like the low weight to weight ratio. Softies still weigh a short ton, but they carry it so low it's a non issue. They ride much more like Victories than older Harleys and to me that's a great thing.
First time I demo'd both a Road King and a Fat Boy, I picked the Fat Boy by a mile. Nice light clutch and the ease/confidence of moving it around at low speed made it far preferable as a solo rider.
In reality, I do a lot of two up riding, so I ended up with a Road King. It didn't get long to get used to the top heaviness in slow maneuvers, though it can still be a bigger PITA to park at times when it's done on leg power. I only have one leg that's useful for such things.
If HD could figure out how to get their touring bike COG down like a Softie and still maintain the ground clearance and 6 gallon tank, they will have found the secret formula and we will be able to finally resolve the Relativity vs quantum mechanics dilema.

A fat boy for 'bar hopping'???? I've done Iron Butt rides, 1000 miles and 1500 miles, a few times over, on a Sportster Forty Eight. I just bought a Fat Boy for increased distances between fuel stops and for a plusher ride. LMAO!

Just a general statement. I wouldn't rock that kind of mileage fighting the wind which is what I was getting at. When I make those kinds of statements im not taking into account adding a windscreen, I try to "review" bikes from an off the shelf position.

I was looking at the fat boy very hard also. But like you I needed bags and a windshield so I went with a heritage this was years ago traded that for a Street glide then traded that for a road glide. I've loved them all but each had been an improvement over the other.

One of my bikes is a Victory Jackpot is it have a 23" wheel in the front and a 250mm tire in the back and when i got it new, i thought crap, i screwed up because it definitely took some getting used to but it didn't take long to get used to the ride and feel. I agree with you on the windscreen, my 07 Jackpot didn't have a windscreen, i find i really like the bike for riding around in the city
I have other bikes also, but some i do not ride and are just for show.
    1948 Indian Chief
    2003 Indian Chief
2014 Indian Chief vintage (Cams, exhaust and air intake all done)
    2007 Victory Jackpot
2015 Victory Cross Country Tour (amazing for 2-up touring)
2016 Victory Magnum (amazing for 1-up touring)
2002 Yamaha v-star (wife rides it)
2005 Honda CBR 600 F4i (perfect for being stupid)
I used to be a Harley guy, had a 2007 H-D Rocker C but ended up returning in and got the Jackpot which had a better motor. In 2012 I bought a new H-D Dyna Wide Glide, had the bigger 103 than my Rocker C did and found i didn't like it so in 2014 i fell in love with my 2014 Indian Chief vintage and got rid of my Wide Glide.
2012 was the last time I owned a H-D and unless Harley changes their business model, i will NEVER go back to them.

TH-cam seems to be full of Polaris employees trying to sell bikes... I’ll give them one thing they are working hard.. but from someone who is purely a customer... and I don’t hate Polaris I just want a good bike for 30,000 I give some consideration to Polaris talked to dealers but they are not there... if you buy one of these there is a good chance you will regret that decision... a lot of mechanical issues with the company poor resale... sales numbers are tanking in spite of what they try to keep hidden

    A worsening sales decline
Polaris Industries is not transparent at all when it comes to telling you how its motorcycle business is performing. Where Harley breaks down sales and shipments by geographic region and type of motorcycle, Polaris provides vague percentage increases or declines, maybe calling out a model once in a while, but never giving investors any real insight into how Indian's various motorcycles are performing.
What we do know is that despite double- and even triple-digit sales growth early on, Indian Motorcycle sales are now quickly spiraling down. Even as Polaris obscures the actual numbers, a mid-teen-percentage decline in retail sales that far eclipses the contraction of the broader motorcycle market suggests that this is becoming a big problem for the bike maker.
Worse, the downdraft is accelerating. In the second quarter, Polaris said Indian retail sales were down by almost 10%, while in the first quarter they were almost 10%, while in the first quarter they were down by high single-digit rates. In last year's fourth quarter they were down by low double-digit amounts, which was a big drop since they had been positive the quarter before.
That doesn't bode well for when Polaris reports results the next time around. Even though the bar has been lowered considerably on sales, there's no reason to think it will be able to rebound -- precisely because Indian is still making the same kinds of heavy, big-bore bikes as Harley.
It just released its newest touring motorcycle, the 2020 Challenger, that houses its bigger, more muscular liquid-cooled PowerPlus engine that evokes images of Harley's Road Glide.

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  4 ปีที่แล้ว

In all fairness Harley is actually going more toward the Polaris direction when it comes to sharing numbers. They used to share how many of each model and changed a couple years ago to mask it a little more. So its not that Polaris is doing anything wrong, its just different ways of reporting sales. Kind of just a company thing.

I think Indian / Polaris are on the move. Remember Harley has gone through some troubling times too but you dont still talk about Harley the same way and have accepted their changes. You have to view Indian / Polaris the same. You can't just dismiss the competition especially when they are coming out with some really awesome products.
