A retrospective that doesn't feel the need to explain the entire story and history of the series? A retrospective that is only 12 minutes long? A retrospective that doesn't feel the desire to waste my time? Awesome! You just got a sub, sir!
While I could happily talk about Anno for many, many hours - I'm not here to waste anyone's time! Thank you for the sub, and I hope you enjoy the future (and past) content
I play the game casually, have the same save file I keep working on a little at a time, and still have many unrealized goals left ahead before I can say I've "finished" even a single game of Anno. It's like that model train running in your garage. You can keep tinkering around with it almost infinitely. And I think one thing that's really nice about seeing games come to the end of their official cycle of support and DLC's is that they finally are in a finished state. No bugs, no future money grabs, Just an amazingly deep and feature rich experience.
The model train analogy is very apt - definitely a game where you can always find something to do - and you're constantly setting your own goals and working towards something bigger (which you'll probably never reach, but you'll keep trying!)
Love your retrospective on 1800 and how its evolved. Personally i came onboard with 1404, and loved it like you did, and 2070 was an amazing modern entry, if not for the gamebreaking anticheat software. 1800 was amazing, but i hope Pax Romana bridges that loading between regions more.. makes it feel less walled off. Love it and cant wait to see what happens next :)
Love 1800 but I have to say 1404 still remains my favorite, it might be the setting, the cartoonish style, or how light hearted it is. Sure, 1404 is simpler, less refined, with less ability to do beauty builiding, but 1800 has that grown up vibe with the seriousness of the industrial age, the politics that comes with it, gritty grey aesthetics, that it takes away some of the fun in the series for me.
I love Anno 1800 on so many aspects ... but I do have some issues with it too. And one of my biggest issue seem to be in 117 too. The fucking terrain elevation that's making buildings all messy and ugly. Also the design of the islands that's simply MADE TO ANNOY THE PLAYER. With cliffs, mountains, stupid ass beaches oriented the worst possible way ... Anyways, nice video :)
I guess that there will be changes made to the first images we saw for Anno 117. If i remember correctly, Anno 1800 also looked quite a bit different in the early screenshots.
I feel like those awkward spots on each map are heightened because of grid placement - It really makes it difficult to work around them. They teased diagonal roads in 117 and that could really open up possibilities
I hope they do something new about the next game. It would be cool if the actual citizens in the game did stuff. What I mean by that is there was 1 anno game where they actually did. Each home had people that left the home and went out to the marketplace to buy the goods. Not saying that's the feature I want but I just hope Anno 117 isn't just 1800 with a new skin.
I really think they'll make 117 distinct - not just 1800 but Roman-ified. I saw an article a while back of citizen's that can branch off into different types which could be a really unique defining mechanic, and given the setting I think there's opportunity to explore some new grounds. A focus on religion and dealing with a pantheon of deities would really separate the game from the rest of the franchise.
Anno 1800 is a game with coal... As for Pax Romana I have no idea what it will be like because how complex could the production chains be for dried peas and fish sauce (Had to look up roman food)
Pax Romana means roman freedom under roman law. It meant that roman citizens could rely on the same laws in the whole empire, some kind of standard boosting economy and trade.
1800 is so good, that I have no hope for 117. It has no chance. It can't beat 1800. It can't have 4-5 continents with different climates. Max 3. It won't have oil. Trains, tractors. What production chains can it have that would be that interesting? No cars, no elevatros, no skyscrapers. No flying units. I doubt they'll add dwarfs on gryphons. Just saying. At most it could have ground combat with food and replenishment logistic chains, but I don't want that. It might appeal to some. But not to me. It literally cannot be as good as 1800, no matter what it does. --------------- But now I'm sorta hyped for a mythology Anno. Where I'm training dragon riding elfs. Where I build slave pits to keep my dark elfs entertained. Beer for my dwarves. Churches for my humans. Gryphon breeding pits. Alchemists. Corpse recycling for my necromancers.
This Anno is literly complete.. i wounder how they are gonna top the it if they bring out the next one.. also this one is timeless.. its design and graphics are timesless.. well done.
Definitely a missed opportunity. I doubt that'll be an element in Anno 117 but maybe after that there'll be a far east Anno? I know a lot of people were hoping for that before 117 was unveiled.
this is why cities skylines will never be the better city builder, or victoria 3 will never be the better economics simulator. Anno will always be superior

One of the few games of that came out in the last years, that was good and polished at launch, and got good dlcs.

I mean. You can still play it? It's still on my hard drive.
And I definitely still will - 1800 lands itself next to 1404 in my Anno GOAT tier, and will probably always be installed on my PC
It is a phenomenal game, and most surprising, produced by Ubisoft
I feel like Bluebyte have been at it long enough now that Ubisoft can just leave them be and they'll keep making great games
You nailed the Anno feeling perfectly ❤

I need to look up Pax Romana , ik Imperium Romanum but that's more simplistic
Pax Romana means roman freedom under roman law. It meant that roman citizens could rely on the same laws in the whole empire, some kind of standard boosting economy and trade.
I like to use oyester sauce and pretend I'm using garum (fermented fish intestine sauce)

It is still an awesome game, the developing funished but that does not mean we cant enjoy it...and i dont think anno 117 will be better than 1800
Hi
This Anno is literly complete..
i wounder how they are gonna top the it if they bring out the next one.. also this one is timeless.. its design and graphics are timesless.. well done.
hi you want play with me in anno 1800
Anno 1800 did not feature the far east !
Definitely a missed opportunity. I doubt that'll be an element in Anno 117 but maybe after that there'll be a far east Anno? I know a lot of people were hoping for that before 117 was unveiled.

As much as I enjoy CS - Anno always hits different. Feels like you're way more in tune with your cities. You're building them, not painting them.
Anno 1701 is better
