His father treated him horribly, always telling him you should have died and not your brother. He had it quite hard. I love him so much. ❤

When Trent saw this, he acknowledged it was Johnnys song from here on out. Still love both myself. But John’s hits sharper.

That line of “everyone I know goes away in the end” reminds me so much of my grandpa. He once told me to not feel sad for him when he passes because he’ll be so happy to go and see everyone again. He was the last one left. He was the youngest kid in his family, so all of his siblings and cousins were gone. His wife was gone. All of his friends he grew up with were gone. His band mates were gone. His veteran buddies were gone. He was the oldest one in the room wherever he went. He was the last man standing and while he was mostly a happy guy, it always kinda weighed him down those last couple of years.
    Great reaction to this 🙌🏼

His Mother is in the picture on the wall. His wife June who was terminally ill, was on the staircase. She had come down during the video shooting to see if Johnny was ok. Johnny said this song/video was a goodbye postcard to June. She died within 2 months and Johnny 6 months later (his friends said from a broken heart).

Your reaction was so pure and genuine💗....and that's how almost everyone reacts to this masterpiece the amazing Johnny Cash gave us before his death. He conveyed such emotion through his voice and the visuals combined, a rare and hauntingly beautiful talent He is still 'The Man In Black' and always will be. R.I.P. 💗

What makes this video so chilling is that it was prophetic .
The video was released in 2002 .
    June died May 2003
    Johnny died September 2003

  • @dagmar.6954
    @dagmar.6954 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.

Johnny had an older brother named Jack. They were really tight. Jack wanted to be a preacher when he grew up. But at 13 he was killed from a saw accident at a sawmill. Johnny watched him die for days. Johnny father told Johnny it should have been him not Jack. Can't imagine what that would do to a kid.

There's not a person yet that's not affected by this song. Not just bc its Johnny cash's goodbye but because it strikes thst chord in us humans that we know it doesn't matter how much money and fame you acquire or whether ur broke in poverty, death comes for us all. And in the end ot doesn't matter who's there, we ask have to face that final journey alone. We will all face the totality of our lives and the regrets we have. The lesson is be careful the bridges you burn.

As a native Arkansan I think it’s illegal here to not be a Johnny Cash fan, Lol, but even still- I grew up on the Man in Black in part because of my dad, who happened to be born exactly 10 months after Johnny Cash (in 1932), and four months before Willie Nelson.
When this video came out I tried to show it to my dad; he was barely able to get through it. Seeing Johnny looking so frail and so much older than he really was, hearing that song, just the whole thing... it hit him way too hard. (Not like it doesn’t make me tear up practically every time, myself.)

That shot of him and his wife walking into the prison was when they played at San Quentin. They also played at Folsom Prison. John had a soft spot on his heart for people there. There's a video on TH-cam at one of them. They're playing a boy named sue. You should check it, bro. You see another side of him.

Yeah, great reaction, it’s impossible to watch/listen to this and not be affected...cash was always f’n incredible, but that last decade of his life he hooked up with Rick Ruben, the genius producer who produced the beastie boys and Tom petty, and rubin brought him the most amazing material to play/cover-- this is a nine inch nails song, when Trent reznor saw this video, he was blown away....that’s the thing about Johnny cash, he makes songs his own to such a degree, that once he played your song, it’s not your song anymore, it’s his....Johnny wrote plenty of songs, but he did a lot of other peoples material too--- anyway, this whole album (his last, from 2002, american 4) is incredible--if u want more like this, check out a song called “one” from the “American 1” album, and one of the very last he recorded called “ain’t no grave”, it’s all so bad ass...the dude was a force of nature.

When the ladies react to this, they break down and cry....it’s so powerful.....I’ve been known to shed a tear myself sometimes...back in 2002, it was just an instant classic. Anyway, again, great, and thoughtful reaction....and Jay-Z loves Johnny cash, he said to his friend, who questioned his choice of music once, during a car ride “shit, Johnny cash has been singing about guns and gangster sh!t before u were even born”

Trent Reznor reflected on the video saying, "I pop the video in, and wow. Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps. Wow. I felt like I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore. It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. Somehow that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning. Different, but every bit as pure."
The song's producer Rick Rubin said of the video, "I cried the first time I saw it. If you were moved to that kind of emotion in the course of a two-hour movie, it would be a great accomplishment. To do it in a four-minute music video is shocking." Rick Rubin now sees the video as a historical document of Johnny Cash.
Johnny Cash, who was 71 years of age at the time of filming in February 2003, had serious health problems. His frailty is evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12. His wife, June Carter Cash, who participated in the video (shown gazing at her husband in several sequences), died three months after filming, on May 15, closely preceding him in death.
The house where the music video was shot, which was Cash's home for nearly 30 years, was destroyed in a fire on April 10, 2007.

NIN was amazing live in concert. Trent Reznor can write some songs... and the fact he had the all time best storyteller Johnny Cash cover it... it's utter brilliance. The perfect song for Johnny to leave this Earth with.
You should listen to NIN do their song Hurt.
Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams Jr, Kris Kristopherson (the outlaws of Country)... now THAT is a fun rabbit hole!
Oh yeah, and Johnny actually went and performed at Folsom Prison... no one ever did that. It's a great show!
