    I've been using the older Odroid Go for a few years and it's been great, for me at least. Can drop it in my pocket and take it with when I go out or pass time on my work breaks. I've played a LOT of tetris on it and some other gameboy color titles. But I'm just hearing about this Go Super now and might have to add it to my list sometime.

    Legit review, man, I just got mine out of the box and can back up most of the things you pointed out. I don't hate on the sticks as much as you (though as a heavy Switch user, the left side flip of analogue/digital is a pisser), but those buttons (especially shoulders) feel cheap (and their positioning being across the X axis is a distraction when you're in 'playstation' brain). +1 to what everybody's said for your honesty, I appreciate it, good on you. I hope the good folks at ODROID listen to your feedback, I think you're saying what we're all thinking.

    People gotta realize that most of the odroid products are DIY and hobbiests sort of thing. They're meant to be tinkered with and not entirely just to play retro game. With that aside there's a few other OSes available for this device that have much better and optimized emulators.

    • @TXFDA
      @TXFDA 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's really the thing though. MOST emulator handhelds are DIY to some extent. Just, some are a bit more work than others. Like, a lot of people go into these things expecting it to be fully set up, packed full of games, right out of the box. And I think that's where some of the issues come in. Nothing against Dodo over here, I'm just talking in general.
      I saw one review of the Retroid Pocket 2+ where the guy straight up trashed the thing and told people not to buy it, because it didn't come pre set-up with roms and stuff. Complaining that if he had realized how much work it'd be, he wouldn't have bothered. Keeping in mind, the RP2+ is one of the easier handhelds to get running since when you first turn it on, it straight up gives you a list of emulators to auto-install. Though I've still spent more time setting up the frontend (Reset Collection), than I have actually playing games.
      I feel like websites that sell these kinds of devices really need to make it more obvious how much work is gonna be required to get it all up and running fully. Most don't even mention roms, let alone the need to provide your own. Most of 'em don't mention that you might need to go online and find your own boxart, screenshot, and logo images because the frontends probably won't get all of them. And that's just the easy stuff. That's not even to mention how much fiddling you may have to do in the emulator settings to get certain games to run well, or that some emulators are better than others. If the websites were more transparent about what you'd need to actually provide and do yourself, it might make it less of a problem.

    I copped one of these when it dropped. I have Scummvm, Atomiswave, Dreamcast, Naomi, Playstation, Sega 32x, Sega CD, PSP, PSP Minis, and N64 with video snaps. It plays everything just fine for me. A few games require you to change the emulator for that game for it to play better but everything plays fine. It has to be tweaked a bit but great for the price.

    Brandon I love your reviews and value the insights you provide into this industry. I have a question for you. Do you share my feeling that the retro handheld industry has seriously stagnated? I feel like there's a two-steps-forward-one-step-back mentality in the industry at large. Like great, that screen is excellent and the build quality is good but the controls still look like ass. Even the heavy hitters like Anbernic and Retroid seem to struggle with this mentality. There's just always some obvious flaw or compromise that detracts from any improvements with basically every new device on the market over the past year or so. Who is going to step up and finally release a $150-200ish handheld with great build quality, a large 480p+ screen, a genuinely approachable interface, and enough power to ACTUALLY handle N64 and/or Dreamcast? It seems ludicrous to me that in 2021 this still doesn't exist.

    • @RetroDodo
      @RetroDodo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Completely agree. There's not been one "perfect" handheld yet there's always something that needs working on. It comes down to their profit margins to make the handhelds, and the screens/CPU's available on the market to source for an affordable price. It's currently the RK3326 chip or Raspberry Pi, and the Chinese don't really want to buy the RP because its too expensive. :/

    hello, was just watching the video, seems reasonable overall, some good some bad. I suggest using the stock hard kernel firmware or Retro Arena for N64 as they are using stand alone Mupen instead of a RetroArch core, as for the borders, they can be removed on any system using retroarch by opening the in game RetroArch menu and going to options,video and then scaling and changing it to whatever the user likes. Dreamcast also works a bit better on stock firmware and Retro Arena as they use Retrorun to run Flycast instead of RetroArch. The only part I disagree with you on is the rg351p, i didn't think that was overly great quality, i love the rg351m however, that one is great quality and has the included wifi without causing speaker noise and so on.

    Got one as an intended upgrade over a ODroid Go Advance Black Edition and have to say that I'm disappointed. No built-in WiFi is a step back, while the larger screen and second analog stick is nice. But the screen also means that the battery runtime is significantly worse, even though it's larger. I got the transparent shell as well and love the look, except that if you're playing in the dark, the blue LED flashing is a bit annoying. So yeah, I want to really like it, but right now I'm considering going back to the Go Advance BE and only using the Super for games that either need dual analog sticks, or as some kind of status display (after adding a WiFi or Ethernet Dongle). Half a Step forward, One Step Back compared to the Advance BE.

    • @TXFDA
      @TXFDA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "The Blue LED is a bit annoying."
      So, you're getting the authentic Game Boy experience. That red LED burned holes into my eyes on countless a night. Even when I was using a worm light so I could actually see the screen.

    You can actually drop in a pair of Vita analog sticks no problem. You can get Vita sticks for like 10 dollars. A version of Android is also being developed for it but it has some issues but once it matures I think with the Vita sticks this can be a pretty good competitor to the Retroid Pocket 2.

    Which firmware did you choose to use as that can make a massive difference on the emulation? Using ArkOS on the RG351 compared to EmuElec for example shows some clear differences. I hear this RetroOZ is meant to be a good firmware for this. Also you can mod the sticks with Vita sticks. Love the display. I'm a little tempted by this.
    Also worth noting this can be picked up from the HardKernel UK distributor for £92.40 which may save packages being damaged!

  • @PunkRockPundit

    I'm really enjoying mine so far. Yeah, it's not perfect to be sure. I would like better sticks and a bit larger buttons and dpad but I don't find them as much of a deal breaker as others seem to. The screen is amazing for clarity and color and the size is exactly the reason I chose this device. The black bars may be annoying for some but you can add bezels to fill those in if you want. In future handhelds, the widescreen is going to become the standard as it is getting harder and harder to find screens in the 4:3 aspect ratio. Performance is exactly what I'd expect from this chipset so I was under no illusions as to what I could play on it. The Odroid Go Super will be my go to handheld until something with a similar size screen and more power comes out.
