WW-II, Southern Germany. My Father said he was in a convoy that had traveled all night. They were hungry, cold by mid-morning when the convoy was held up by traffic. Their Sgt. noticed a field kitchen that had just cleaned up from serving breakfast at the side of the road. He went over and talked w/the mess Sgt. Explained that they'd been traveling all night, were tired, hungry, cold. The mess Sgt. told him to give them 15 minutes and then get his people in the chow line. The big gas-fired kettles were lit, cans and trays of food were heated and hot coffee brewed. They were lined up, fed, had their mess gear cleaned and sterilized and sitting back in their vehicles by the time the convoy got word to move out. Traveled all day in an unheated jeep as the passenger and by night when they stopped to sleep, his feet were beet red and extremely painful. Thought he might lose his toes. He stripped down, wrapped his feet with one wool blanket, wrapped another one around the 1st blanket and himself and fell asleep. In the morning his feet were back to normal. Almost losing his toes and the mess Sgt. that went above and beyond to care for them were the two things he never forgot. He said the Supply Corp won WW-II ...

When I was onboard ship I always made sure I took care of the cooks. The Chief (FSC) asked me once if I had any "spare" computer parts to put together a terminal for his "Jack of the Dust" and gave me a good reason for it. By the end of the week, I had him set up with a computer terminal, in a small space that use to used to access the engine room, all set up and even hooked up to a printer. It cost me one color monitor and a graphics slice in trade to the shore based ESD unit but he (and his guys) were VERY happy to not have use a terminal 1 deck below and fight the engineers for it's use. I gained a few pounds after that ;-) Always take care of the cooks.

During a 4 day National Guard Drill I was put on KP for the whole drill. At first I was pissed but I ended up working under the most squared away Staff Sergent in Military History. I had so much time off while everyone else was out in the field, then on the last day he had us come in at 0200 and just but our asses, cooking the final meal and cleaning up. We were dismissed at by 0800. I reported back to my unit and was sent home while the rest of the unit didn't get out till later in the evening.

I spent 7 years in NG as a cook in Minnesota and had 2 winter camps at Camp Ripley. We definitely didn’t get pre packaged meals. We had c rations rarely and the other meals were cooked from fresh rations supplied to us. The only warm place was the mess tent.

Came off a 2 week field problem where it rained almost the entire time. Probably the worst field time I ever spent. When we got back to the rear, they had a field kitchen set up, and they were serving steaks (army steaks, so, you know what I am talking about). To this day, that was one of my top 5 best meals ever. After a month of being cold and wet, and surviving on largely MREs with an occasional T rat meal-a hot, real meal was amazing.

The Unitized Group Ration - A Option (UGR-A) is used to sustain military personnel during worldwide operations that allow organized food service facilities. The UGR-A is designed to maximize the use of commercial items and to simplify the process of providing high quality food service in a field environment. All components for a complete 50-person meal are included in the UGR-A, with the exception of mandatory supplements, such as milk and cold cereal, and optional enhancements like bread and fresh fruit and vegetables. The UGR-A includes perishable/frozen type entrees (A-Rations) along with commercial-type components. Currently there are 7 breakfast and 14 lunch/dinner menus available. There is no minimum ordering quantity required (i.e. orders for single modules are accepted). The UGR-A module is comprised of 3 boxes. One pallet is comprised of 12 modules, which provides 600 meals. The average weight and cube of one UGR-A module is 86.70 lbs and 4.03 cubic feet.
New to the UGR-A program are 7 short-order menus. The short-order menus complement the 14 lunch/dinner UGR-A menus. Short-order menus include: Philly steak hoagies, chicken nuggets, Italian sausage subs, beef enchiladas, chicken wings, pepperoni and cheese stromboli, and hamburgers and hot dogs. Like the regular UGR-A menus, the short-order menus contain all the components for a complete 50-person meal, with the exception of mandatory supplements and optional enhancements. The short-order menus expand the variety and options of meals available to the warfighter.

This is the 63rd Theater Aviation Brigade, they are not Special Forces, they are Army National Guard. Standard Infantry Div. National Guard Unit from Kentucky. Just doing typical field training and cold weather training. "SF" should be referring to the "Security Forces" each element provides its stations and assets.

Because the animals will keep coming back to the base thinking they'll keep giving scraps. That's exactly the last thing you would want as you don't know the diseases the animals may carry. The last thing you want is an outbreak of fucking bird flu in the middle of the arctic.
