AMAZING warranty with the Smith &Wesson too! I called them and said the guide rod/recoil spring on my Shield 9 was not holding in place as good as when it was new. The guy asked for my address and shipped out a brand new Guide rod/recoil spring. No charge for anything! Also i traded for a Bodyguard BG38 in 38 special with the laser. The laser was the old "InSite" laser and the button was so old and hard you could not turn the laser on. I sent it to them at their cost and they replaced it with a brand new Crimson Trace laser. No charge at all. BEST Customer service ever!
Good comparison review! One thing you didn't mention is the XDS's grip safety. For those of us that appendix carry, this can be a big deal. When reholstering the XDS with proper form, by placing your thumb on the rear of the slide, you disengage the grip safety rendering the gun inert and completely safe to reholster. The same can't be said of the Shield, Glock, etc. This one thing was enough for me to favor the XDS as my choice for EDC.
Thank you for a great comparison video, I was up in the air between the Springfield XDS 45 and SW Shield 45, but your analysis of the two weapons helped me decide on the SW Shield 45..keep up with the great educational and consumer oriented videos...
I've never shot the Springfield, but have shot many pistols , and found that I shoot the shield 9, and 45 better than most pistols. They just shoot so good, right out of the box. To me it's important to feel confident that I'll hit what I'm aiming at, and I absolutely do with the shield.
Nice video!!!!! Both handguns are good. True, the Shield holds 6 rounds with flush magazine and the XDS just 5... BOTH have a 7 rounds magazines option. However the XDS also have a 6 rounds magazine option. When you insert the 6 rounder into the XDS both are the same size. To me seems the XDS has more options especially for pocket carry due to the shorter grip.
I've not seen the 6 rounder for sale anywhere or I would buy one. I might just order a couple so I can say I have them. The shorter grip is definitely a little easier to get in and out of the pocket.
Congratulations! You are a great shot! I have both and I love them but I do carry my Springfield Armory XDs for my concealed carry using Sig V-Crown 200 grain JHP as my defense ammo! 👌
Springfield xds 45...better gun..smaller..more compact..better "build" more features ie...ambi mag release...tactile loaded chamber indicator..accesory rail...grip safety making iwb & holstering/handling safer...more mag options the list goes on...great choice...im looking for another xds 45 gen 1...disappointed they discontinued XDS 45 is a BEAST!!
The XDS 45 comes a 5 round magazine and a 6 round magazine and there is a 7 round mag available (which you showed on the video). They are both amazing firearms but for me, the XDS was my favorite which is why I purchased mine. This was my 4th Springfield XD firearm. I came real close to getting the shield though and am still considering it. Great video!
I've had and carried my 45 Sheild for almost 4 years now with 0 problems and malfunctions. When I bought it,it was down to the 45 Xds and the 45 Sheild.I held and shot both and decided to go with the Sheild. It felt better in my hand, shot it better, and felt less recoil with it + one round was a bonus.Of all my pistols, the 45 Sheild is my favorite to carry concealed.I carry it with the flush fitting mag and the extended one in my back pocket...works for me
@@MuzzleFirst It was a hypothetical response...I wasn't seriously accusing or questioning you...i know things get lost in translation...I apologize it came across that way.
And by the way I love the Shield 45. Accurate, no failures so far, and I would recommend this gun highly. Big S&W fan. Got mine for $317. After the rebate out the door $290.
Do yourself a favor, shoot them both first. I think you'll pick the XDs. The M&P feels like it's trying to tear itself apart when you shoot it. Just my opinion, but try before you buy.
Rich Weatherly your gonna love your s&w .45! I have one too and I love it! Very smooth shooter and honestly I’m more accurate with it than I am with my 9mm. It’s also easy to carry and conceal it’s a little heavier than my 9mm but it’s not to bad.let me know how it’s goin with your new gun!!!
Excellent video..... nicely done.... I have an S&W M&P Shield 9mm as my CCW which I really enjoy shooting at the range, but for the last month I have been considering the .45 and after watching your video I will buy a M&P 45 ACP... Keep it up.... Thanks
The holster that comes with it was great when my friends and I used to open carry. You can secure it to your belt or even the outside of your front pocket. The XDM 3.8 holster retains the XDS surprisingly well by the trigger guard.
thanks for the review. I'm going with the sw mainly for capacity and I think it looks better. I've just been hearing mainly good reviews on it so I'm going to give it a shot. again thanks for the honest review
I own the m&p shield. 45. I came very close to buying the Springfield tho,but after consiering everything I chose the shield .not that the Springfield is a bad gun,i just honestly like the shield better. So much infact that its now my edc!
I was in the market for a compact ..45 and love the xds but the smith at my local gun store had a better deal on the smith, and I also liked the grip better, plus when I was a cop I carried a smith and love them.the xds is a great gun,but I went with the smith
Muzzle First New stippling makes for better grip on the pistol. Concealed Carry? Not so great. I use iwb holster and first time I carried it my side was rubbed raw. Houge sleeve fixed that but no more aggressive stippling.
You could wear an undershirt so the firearm is not kept next to the skin. You could change holsters to one with a sweat shield so the firearm is not next to the skin. Sorry, I have to disagree that a smooth grip is preferable. I pocket carry my shield daily and the aggressive texture of the grip has never caused an issue with drawing the pistol or irritation of my skin.
I agree with muzzle I’m a big guy and I carry my shield as me edc.every now and then I feel it but it’s not that bad and isn’t a problem love this gun!
Not sure if the 6 rounder for the XDS is available in stores but when I bought my XDS I got a super deal. Pistol came with two mags the flush and the 7 rounds magazine. Plus Springfield had a awesome offer a that time. They sent me 3 more magazines with mag holder for free. They included an extra flush magazine the 6 and the 7 rounder. ;-)
I checked my magazines just to make sure and all I have are the 5 and 7 round magazines. I may have to order a couple 6 round magazines for the XDS just so I can say I have them. Thanks for watching.
Springfield cheaped out on the extra goodies with the mod 2 but kept the box the same size. My gun dealer was shocked as hell the case was so big and all you got was a gun and a lock NO BODY uses.
I just purchased this gun a few weeks ago, have not had it to the range yet so I'm not able to carry it yet,but going in a cpl days, but quality seems superb
I have both , and like them both. The XDS, is a tad smaller with the flush fit mag , But I shoot the Shield much better. For appendix carry, the extra safety on the XDs is nice , so you dont shoot your balls off, if I could do it over, I'd get the Shield with the manual thumb saftey.I think the Performance Center model is a good touch also, that's what I bought.
I also have a S&W 45 Shield, and love it. I have had Springfield XDs, and for some reason I do not care for them. The 45 Shield is a smooth shooter, and conceals very well. I have a Shield in 9, 40 and 45, so I guess you can say im a big Shield fan, but I do have a couple other guns(brands) I like as well. My next one is the S&W 45 Shield Performance. Cant wait to get that one.
I got a S&W Shield .45 and I love it. Purchased me a Ruger Commander SR1911 back in January and it’s probably best pistol I have ever purchased!!! Highly recommended
I'm going to have to get the xds 4.0. I just traded a glock for the shield 45 and I took it to the range yesterday and immediately knew I made a great trade. Fantastic shooting gun.
Springfield is my pick. PIC rail Fiber front sight (on the latest model) Better trigger (IMO) Mag release can be used with Thumb, index, and middle finger. I like a grip safety because it gives just a bit more draw, holster, and carry safety. (IMO)
Springfield does sell a 6 round magazine for the XDs that would equal the M&P, However not sold in stores. I have had no issues with my XDs and consider it beefier than the M&P. You should have tried both back straps on the XDs before judging the grips.
I work in a gun store and 4 out of 9 employees including the owner carry the XDS in 45ACP and my choice for EDC was also an XDS - twice! The Shield is a fantastic gun and I tried very hard to convince myself to buy one but couldn't do it. I didn't measure the width but the Shield felt more narrow at the beaver tail and I just didn't like that. I have large hands and the XDS felt better. My first XDS purchase was a first gen with the grenade grip and then another was a Mod 2, and I friggin love those guns.. Normally I don't like a grip safety, but the one on the XDS is small and completely unnoticeable. I never feel it and have never had a problem. I also like the fact that the trigger is blocked when I'm not holding the gun. A trigger safety is a joke, IMO. Anything that enters the guard can pull the trigger. With the XDS, if I have to fish it out from between the seats in the dark it *should* be safe as long as the grip safety is not pressed. It's a real safety that actually works without any extra effort on my part. My vote for the best trigger goes to the Shield but only by a fraction. Both are great and very reliable guns. My recommendation to anyone considering either of these (if you can find one right now) would be to get the one that feels the best in your hands.
I don't mind the long videos( ex:Justin Opinion and Hegshot87) they make the time go by and they're fun to watch.I enjoyed watching yours as well...good job breaking down the two. As for these two firearms, i've only shot the XDs and it was a nice shooter.Although, the grip is too aggressive for my liking. As for the Shield, i did own one in 9mm and i liked it quite a bit. That was until i traded in my wife's Sig P238 for an even swap for the M&P9c.That has become my favorite firearm to carry out of my collection.I liked it so much, i had to have another one.I ended up trading in my Shield and my original PPS for the 9c in FDE.I had to mull that decision over for a few days.Do i really wanna trade in two guns for one and would i regret it? Since i've put my two single stacks on the back burner and have been carrying mostly double stacks(9c, XD9, G26 and the Sig P320sc) for the past several months, it was a pretty easy decision.I ended up getting the 9c with two extra mags and $85 in the trade.I used the cash to put on another set of Ameriglo Idots sights as my first 9c.It's been three months now and i don't miss the Shield or the PPS, even though both were very reliable firearms.Sorry for the rant, just wanted to share. :)
Nice assortment of carry guns you got there. I also like longer videos than what TH-cam says you should make. I find it difficult to cut down what I am trying to say to 5 minutes or less and still be thorough on a topic. Thanks for watching, I appreciate the feedback.
The stippling on the 45 Shield is very sharp. I usually don't wear two t-shirts in the summertime. My other IWB carry are Glock 19, Ruger SR40c, and Pf9. No problems with any of them. The Hogue grip sleeve isn't smooth it has texture and fits perfectly. So everyone is entitled to their own opinion
Does the grip safety on the XDS rattle when you carry it? I have a full sized Springfield steel frame 1911 and the grip safety makes an audible rattle sound when I walk. I have it narrowed down to the Shield .45 or the XDS .45. But I really don’t like the grip safety rattle. I might just get the Shield .45.
I have 2 M&P Shields: a 9mm and a .45. S&W really needs to add a mag loader for the .45 Shield. I put a nice used XDs in .45 on layaway yesterday. It will be a nice 'pool-side' gun. 😁
GDHP would be an excellent carry round. Wanted to ask if you have tried the Federal Premium Personal Defense round (165 gr.). Thanks for the excellent comparison video, by the way!
The pocket holster was made by a local craftsman. He is an ex LEO and I found him from a friend at a local gun shop. I was looking for a holster for my GP100 and was not finding much of a selection locally.
Thanks for the comparison and review. Like you, I've been carrying an XPS45 and I have been very happy with it. I have owned M&Ps in 9c, 40c and a full size 45, but never carried them. I liked them a lot, but they are just too bulky to carry concealed. When it came out, I jumped on the XDS because of it's size and power. When the M&P Shields first came out, I was impressed with their size, but I wanted a bigger bullet. I was really pleased when S&W released the 45 Shield, but I waited until the reviews started to come in before committing to a buying one. So far, I have not seen a single negative review, so mine is now on order. One thing I don't think you mentioned during the video was the distance you fired the pistols from the target.
The distance was approximately 10 to 12 yards. No official measure, I just take 10 full steps back from the target and move a plastic barrel to mark the spot. They both really are fantastic conceal carry guns. What is your preferred method of carry for the XDS?
You forgot to mention the magazine release on the XD-S is ambidextrous you can release it from either side without modifying anything. You did mention the loaded chamber indicator being tactile I find that a great Advantage especially in total darkness. That one extra round isn't worth the differences. Especially the size.
Keith McCready that extra round could be a game changer! I looked at the Springfield when I was buying my s&w but not only did the shield hold an extra round but it was a lot less expensive! Tie that in with the good old made in the USA all that considered..... I chose s&w!!
The critical measurement is the height of the grips from the bottom of the magizine to the top of the slide while trying to conceal. That's assuming the barrel length isn't too radically different. When I bought my XDs Mod ll version 45acp it came all packaged in a cardboard box, in a very useful ballistic nylon zip up range bag and 4 mags. 2) 6 round, 1) pinky finger extended mag 5 round, and 1) flush fit 5 round. Plus a bore brush and the usual small tube of slide grease/oil, and of course the lock and an actually usable stiff nylon IWB holster. I paid $545 out the door. As far as striker fired goes it's addiquit and easily carried concealed. Like all my carry guns, I only use Wright Leather Works OWB holsters. The Idea of carrying in my pocket makes my skin crawl. 21 years of concealed carry in the great state of Florida, and no accidents...
Both are superb guns! I work in a gun store and own 2 of the XDS pistols, one in 9MM and one in .40ACP, and the only reason I don't have one in .45 is because they became unavailable once Covid, BML, Antifa, Defund the Police and election fear hit and production could no no longer keep up . They are still available via the internet but at VERY premium prices. I wanted the Shield really bad but comparing them in every way imaginable I went with the XDS because it fit my hand better My 9mm is the first gen with the grenade grip and the 40 is a Mod 2. I like both - maybe the Mod 2 a bit better because of the finger cut between the grip and trigger guard. IMO, the Shield has a slightly better break but not enough to rule it in or out. Hold both and get the one that feels right. Neither gun will disappoint. For me it's the XDS 12 hours a day every day.
The holster is made by JB Custom Leather in Ellisville Missouri. He's a retired police officer and has been making holsters for about 20 years. Great guy to do business with. Thanks for watching.
video was long but very good. I carry the smith mp45c, inside the waste band, with the smallest grip, and can't stand the feel of the 45 shield in my hands. I have big hands.
Had the xds and traded it off. Just couldn't get comfortable with the grip. Even with some traction applications. Probably should have gone with Talon Grips instead of Foxx. Seriously considering a shield. For sure won't need any grip applications, I have the 2.0 compact in 45 and a 2.0 compact in 9 on lay away. Love the new grip textures. Had an m&p9c and had to put talon grips on it. The 2.0 line, with the improved triggers and grip texture straight from the factory has eliminated the need for those common aftermarket upgrades
I'm going to my local gun range to rent one of these. I called them and they have it in their rental line up. I didn't care for the narrow grip of the 9mm Shield and didn't like the trigger at all!!!! I do however like the 45's trigger much better than the older 9mm. Ill have have to shoot the 45 and see how It feels with that narrow grip!! The reset was terrible in the older 9mm the new 45 reset is awesome!!! The 9mm had a weird click on reset before the actual reset click that botherd me.
I hear people mention weight, I carry a xds 4.0 8 to 10 hrs a day no issue here. With that sai6i do have 26 but don't care for it, round count for defense well if you do get to use it and fire all the ammo be prepare for jail.
Sounds like you're looking for any excuse to pick the S&M over the XDs. The two pistols are probably the most equal pistols I have ever seen. So the deal breaker is the accessories I got with the XDs. Mine came in a Ballistic Nylon case with 4 magazines, a usable Nylon IWB holster, a bore brush and all the usual other stuff. By far the better value. Both cost about $525 at the time. I bought the Mod 2 and they now have the much improved grip texture.
I bought the Shield and am very impressed.... Two strikes against the Springfield in my mind are the grip safety and loaded chamber indicator.... With the current S&W rebates the Shield is now in Taurus price range.
It's a 45 cal. in a small package and you say it doesn't kick it's manageable= a 500 cal. is manageable to some. Also you talked about the trigger reset, are you being paid by S&W because you just blew over the XDS reset, you were wrong, also the noise from the shield trigger, A SALESMAN

Both great guns that you can't go wrong with. I bought the shield, but would carry the XDS with extreme confidence.
He did mention the grip saftey, he said he would rather not have it
It doesn't matter if the grip safety is pressed anyway as long as the trigger doesn't get pulled.

I love the Shield. Great gun for the money. Thanks for watching.
I got a S&W Shield .45 and I love it. Purchased me a Ruger Commander SR1911 back in January and it’s probably best pistol I have ever purchased!!! Highly recommended
Got the XDS with the 4" barrel and a 5,6, & 7 round mag for $325.
I'm going to have to get the xds 4.0. I just traded a glock for the shield 45 and I took it to the range yesterday and immediately knew I made a great trade. Fantastic shooting gun.
Ok that will probably be my next gun!
Springfield is my pick.
PIC rail
Fiber front sight (on the latest model)
Better trigger (IMO)
Mag release can be used with Thumb, index, and middle finger.
Great review, you helped me choose mine.. Great job my friend 👍👍
Thank you Randy, glad to help.
Xds won i see
How does the Shield shoot compared to the Springfield?
They both are good shooting guns. I find the grip on the Shield to be more comfortable for me and I really like the skateboard tape texture.
Yeah, you don't wanna be rushed.Just go with the flow.
You also don’t get all the extra stuff anymore. They run mail in specials for the extras from time to time
Yea and that sucks. Even though I don't use the plastic hoster that came with it, it's kind of nice when they throw it in.
Good video. it's the M&P for me.. thank you.
No rattle that I have noticed. The Shield is a great pistol, you will not regret purchasing one.
Thank you.
What kind of holster is that light brown one?
It was custom made by a local leather smith.
I have 2 M&P Shields: a 9mm and a .45. S&W really needs to add a mag loader for the .45 Shield. I put a nice used XDs in .45 on layaway yesterday. It will be a nice 'pool-side' gun. 😁
Update: I have the XDs, now. Its mags are MUCH easier to load than the M&P's.
um...xds fiber optic sight?is a big selling point.i have the xds and gaining sight picture on the move is easier.
I do like fiber optic sights. Thanks for watching and for the feedback.
I have the XDS in a 4" in 45 and I carry it IWB all the time
I love the XDS
GDHP would be an excellent carry round. Wanted to ask if you have tried the Federal Premium Personal Defense round (165 gr.). Thanks for the excellent comparison video, by the way!
I've not tried the Federal Premium in my Shield or XDS. But it should make a good self defense round, Federal makes good ammo. Thanks for watching.
Nice comparison....Who makes that pocket holster?
The pocket holster was made by a local craftsman. He is an ex LEO and I found him from a friend at a local gun shop. I was looking for a holster for my GP100 and was not finding much of a selection locally.
Thanks. The holster looks very well made. Any chance for contact info?
Send me a PM with your email address and I will send you his contact information.
Thanks so much for the info!
What brand holster is that? I like it. I pocket carry a gen3 Glock 26 with a Remora holster now.
It's made by a local retired LEO
Great video!!!👍
Just ordered the Smith.
I've owned a S&W M&P9 first gen and loved it, traded it away. But I would buy the springfield before I would buy another smith M&P.
Why do you prefer leather holsters? I live in the south (it gets very hot ), is sweating a problem?
I have them both I like both but the extra round in the sw does help
Yes indeed, thanks for watching.
Had both , sold my m&p and got my wife a xds 9mm . Just like xds and Springfield Armory better. To each his own.
Brian Roberts which one do think had a better trigger?
This guy does not know. I think the m&p shield 45 is better because the magazine ejection is better compared to the XD
@@Captseed you a wrong. i have a xds 45 i bought 4 or 5 years ago! wonderful handgun. lookin to buy another!
What kind of pocket holster is that?
The holster is made by JB Custom Leather in Ellisville Missouri. He's a retired police officer and has been making holsters for about 20 years. Great guy to do business with. Thanks for watching.
CTC will probably make a Green Laserguard for the 45 Shield since it makes one for the 9 Shield. No rail required.
That would be cool.
Check it out at Smith and Wesson. They sent me my 9 Shield with it. They seem to own Crimson Trace Lasers. Might need a new holster for it though.
Shield 45 performance center in crossbreed holster good to go
You can get a magazine for the XDS that equals those capacity of the Shield.
M&P hands down !!! For me
I am moving back to my M&P for EDC. Great pistols. Thanks for watching.
good informal video
Thank you, thanks for watching.
video was long but very good. I carry the smith mp45c, inside the waste band, with the smallest grip, and can't stand the feel of the 45 shield in my hands. I have big hands.
Yea that double stack probably does fit better in large hands than the shield. Thanks for watching, I appreciate the feedback.
james travassos
Had the xds and traded it off. Just couldn't get comfortable with the grip. Even with some traction applications. Probably should have gone with Talon Grips instead of Foxx.
Seriously considering a shield. For sure won't need any grip applications, I have the 2.0 compact in 45 and a 2.0 compact in 9 on lay away. Love the new grip textures. Had an m&p9c and had to put talon grips on it.
The 2.0 line, with the improved triggers and grip texture straight from the factory has eliminated the need for those common aftermarket upgrades
Should have done the talon grips bro..I put them on all my pistols
I'm going to my local gun range to rent one of these. I called them and they have it in their rental line up. I didn't care for the narrow grip of the 9mm Shield and didn't like the trigger at all!!!! I do however like the 45's trigger much better than the older 9mm. Ill have have to shoot the 45 and see how It feels with that narrow grip!! The reset was terrible in the older 9mm the new 45 reset is awesome!!! The 9mm had a weird click on reset before the actual reset click that botherd me.
If you can shoot it before making a purchase you should. Post your thoughts after shooting it, i'd like to know what you think. Thanks for watching.
What holster are you using?
The holster is made by a local guy. His company name is JB Custom Leather.
How much did the shield cost?
It was about $420, give or take a couple bucks.
I hear people mention weight, I carry a xds 4.0 8 to 10 hrs a day no issue here. With that sai6i do have 26 but don't care for it, round count for defense well if you do get to use it and fire all the ammo be prepare for jail.
I will take both
Sounds like you're looking for any excuse to pick the S&M over the XDs.
Its a great gun. Thanks for watching
Good video but it would be better if you held the pistols still while you showed them to us.
Good to know, thanks for the feedback. I will keep that in mind.
Thanks. I wouldn't have known if I was making a video.
Anyone experience low hits in the xds? Point of aim is at 12 with point of impact being closer to 6. Distance at 5 yards? Is it the sites.
Grip safety for me all day long. 2 safety's, that's why I carry the XDS.
Springfield makes a 6 round mag for the XDs. That's how I carry mine.
Springfield must do something to make this XDS .45 hold 6 rounds on a flush magazine.
