Koby’s expanded role also allows for further use of himself as an audience surrogate. He serves this role in the first 3 episodes of the anime, then disappears for a while. But keeping him throughout the season and following his discovery of things like the Seven Warlords (hinting at the corruption of the world government), seeing some of the consequences of the Straw Hats’ adventures, as well as Garp’s initially ambiguous morality, all help newcomers understand that in the world of One Piece, things are nowhere near as simple as they seem.

As someone who was so afraid to start One Piece because of how massive it is, the live action was perfect for me. It was like watching a highlight reel on what makes the show incredible and now I’m completely sold on finally watching the anime so I can learn more about what really happened in the source material! I just hope the OG One Piece fans can welcome us newbies into their fandom 🥹👉🏼👈🏼💕
The anime has really poor pacing and censors a lot of stuff. Even Zeff eating his leg which was in the manga got censored and he lost his leg because it got stuck while he was saving a drowning Sanji. That's just my advice though.
My favorite part about this adaptation was seeing people new to the franchise who've never seen or even heard of One Piece's existence reaction to the show and getting to know the world.
I'd never watched the anime watched the live action this then made me wanna watch the anime witch I then binged the whole series in 3 months absolutely loved it
I just wished that Sanji had been present for Zoro's duel with mihawk. In the manga, thst fight is a direct equivalent to Sanji's situation. Sanji yells to Zoro that "it's easy to abandon your dreams," urging him to save his life. That was exactly what Sanji was doing by staying at Baratie, Garp even commented on this. That's when Sanji decided to leave and join Luffy.
I think the introduction of Baroque Works much earlier on in the show, simultaneous with Zoro's introduction, was a great narrative choice to not only lay the ground for the organisation as a whole in future seasons, but mainly because it's wonderful way to show that Zoro has been declining every opportunity that came his way to join any kind of crew. I mean his first scene was him declining to join and saying he's got his "own thing going on". This really hits harder when Luffy asks him to join the Straw Hats and, for the first time, Zoro doesn't say he's got his own thing going anymore, but joins and trusts in Luffy because he realises - unlike anyone else he's met, and certainly unlike Baroque Works - that Luffy is a strong, kind leader who will not only allow him, but push him and support him in realising his dream of becoming the world's greatest swordsman.
My top 5 original OPLA scenes: 5. Kuro stabbing Kaya in the walls 4. Buggy (head) temporarily became part of Straw Hat Pirates 3. Mihawk's introduction call, slaying Don Krieg's crew at the beach 2. Zoro/Baroque Works' introduction, killing Mr 7 1. Nami blaming Luffy, next to Zoro being unconscious, after defeated by Mihawk
I actually liked that Luffy had this emotional turmoil going when Zoro almost dies bc of Mihawk. I also appreciated how his resolution showcased how much he values ppl's dreams but also how he's coming to terms with the responsibilities he has of being a captain. I don't think we see much of the latter until his confrontation with Vivi in the manga/anime, but it's mostly during his fight with Usopp that it clearly gets the weight it deserves.
Now this is how you adapt a manga into a live action show. Shoot, even into an anime. Charting your own course while still hitting major story eats that doesn’t who the characters are and what their about. Live action show runners should take note 👏
Actually, Don Krieg provided an opportunity to show off parts of Sanji and Zeff's character that were barely brushed upon in the live action. Yes, we still see Sanji feed Krieg's starving first mate, but in the anime, Krieg shows up with what's left of his crew after Mihawk attacked them in the Grand Line (he doesn't slice their giant ship in half until he catches up with them at Baratie soon after Krieg does). Zeff also chooses to feed Krieg and his crew, even though they were butts about it (and even though his cooks desperately tried to convince him otherwise. On top of that, it comes out that Zeff was big name pirate who sailed the Grand Line, himself, for a year, and was quite successful until he met Sanji and chose to turn his life in another direction. When Krieg learns this, he's hellbent on not only taking the Baratie (after Mihawk has destroyed his), but on getting his hands on Zeff's logs to increase his chances of survival in the Grand Line. Cool stuff we didn't get in live action, since they chose to focus on Arlong ahead of time 😢.
I agree that this helps reflect Sanji's character, and it was unfortunate that they cut it, and weird that they chose to focus on Zeff's anger at Sanji over his weird recipes... But I feel like this was a pretty reasonable sacrifice for the purposes of making the arc work.
They also showed Zeff being a great pirate due to Luffys grandpa talking about it and Sanji flashbacks we still get to see that Zeff is a great pirate/person.
Comparing pacing between the anime and live action show, the show is moving very, very fast. They are skipping over a lot and it works as the anime does have a lot of filler.
I'd say the pacing improves even over the Manga. I had genuinely given up at the start of Alabasta because it was just dragging too much for me. The live action, however, is paced concise enough that I need to keep going.
Lets be honest though, many shows pre-streaming era had some of the most godawful pacing imagineable. I still remember how many shows had that 20+ episode a season formula, and I thought the vast majority of them are terrible. Feels like they're just dragging the hell out of the series for the sake of it. It can work for comedy series like Simpsons, Family Guy, Friends, etc because comedies don't need consequential long stories arcs. Outside of it though, it gets boring and tiring real fast. Don't even get me started on police procedurals which is one of my most hated TV genres just outside "reality" trash. If the anime really took freaking 300 episodes to introduce Luffy's grandpa, I can see why the showrunner understandably don't want to have audiences waiting that long.
A change I did not like and felt unnecessary was having Nojiko and the villagers not know about Nami. In the manga the reason Nojiko got tattoos in the first place was to support Nami and she was the only one she could confide in which brought about how important just having that 1 person can be.
@@eleven9286 to be fair, Nojiko had a darker skin tone than Nami in the anime, so black ist not that far off, and it kinda fits for Bellemeres patchwork family
I would argue it's "improvements in the context of an adaptation" .... a lot of emotional weight, as well as thematic exploration and character development, got lost through the all that tightening ... but that is also a good thing, since in this way, the liveaction can stand on it own and we can enjoy it a reimagination of the manga seperately
I wholeheartedly agree... though in fairness to the creative staff, they were able to squeeze over fifty episodes into just 8... so I'll cut them a bit of slack ;)
@@tophlaw4274 i am not complainingabout the show, I just get triggered with "improvement" talk... and I am not saying the manga is beyond criticism, but even at the beginning Oda laid so much groundwork, thematically, visually as well as for his characters.
You said it yourself, they had to condense 90+ chapters into 8 episodes yet they added a whole new original storyline that took away even more time to develop what really mattered in the East Blue Saga which was the Five main characters… so even though they did a good job, and enjoyed the show mostly, it could have been amazing or even a masterpiece without that new storyline.
It would have been an improvement if the show was better than the original source…. Something that is clearly not especially in the latter part of the season (Arlong Park). Personally I enjoyed it and I could say that the first and second episodes are improvements but at the same time they took away some important details from the source material…. I enjoyed it for what it was, but it could have been waay better. The Garp storyline was the worst offender in my opinion…
@@AkahigeNoAmo yup... specially when they turned Arlong from a simple marauding brute with dreams of world domination into a 'relatable'/justifiable Malcolm X-like extremist fighting for his "opressed" people & consider that "improvement".... (again, only have the anime as a reference, not sure that was a thing in the original manga source)... though I suppose it's the world we live in
A couple notes: 12:07 The LA Mr. 7, including his apparence, is canon in the original as well since Oda did give more information in the SBS (a Q&A section of the manga) about Zoro first encounter with Baroque Works. Still it was great to actually see the fight for the first time. 13:56 In the manga Garp does appear during East Blue saga in the cover stories, although the story itself does go into the next saga One change that I personally disliked was Usopp fight with Chuu. After he fakes his death in the original he was a moment of great courage that he notice he cant keep the way he is and lying about his fight would not do which makes him get up and call Chuu - in the LA that emotional scene is missing so him calling Chuu was no weight and is kinda stupid
Ive struggled to get into the anime in the past and I loved the live action so much for changing some of the things that bothered me most. Merry actually dies! Sanji failing at flirting is a running gag that isnt so constantly in your face annoying and skeevy! Usopp is actually likable instead of ridiculously irritating! Women look like real people instead of either blimps or boobs on a stick! Oh ya and Zef eats his leg! Really appreciate those changes from the anime.
Personally, I think some of the changes felt like they rushed the show a little bit. But I think this was necessary so that they could get all the way through to Namis ark. For the most part, I think they got the spirit of one piece down. I hope they’re able to maybe slow down the pacing a little bit for season two. A few more episodes would have fleshed out some of the characters a little better. But I think honestly the show did about as good as it could’ve. I’m sure it’s hard getting funding for live action anime when none of them have ever done well. Maybe now that we have a successful one they can get better budgets and more episodes.
This video makes you realize that it is financially inefficient and moronic to try and make a live-action of a manga/anime with all its secondary and third and fourth plot-lines.. All the "dragging out the story" and small details etc.. You have to compromise. And. And , I think as I am 700 episodes into the Anime right now.. that the Live Action NF adaptation was amazing and it did a really good job portraying this animated masterpiece in its own right. Edit: I am so glad that I decided to start watch the One Piece anime little over half a year ago.. I thought it was gonna be a behemoth but it turned out that the first 50 episodes turned in to 300 then 500 and now I am just 300ish behind the weekly release! This has been the most amazing journey to watch!
Hachi was an important omission, partly because he is a recurring character, but also, importantly, because he was Zoro's last big win. Without Hachi, Zoro *kind of* goes out on a weak note-he just kind of has a small battle alongside Sanji after having lost to Mihawk. Having also cut Jango and reduced the role of Cabaji, I feel like Zoro's barely had a chance to show his strength, which is... kind of important. Zoro being the second strongest in the crew is a meaningful part of his characterization, and justifies the rest-the fact that he's quiet, and determined, and able to use you-know-what, and the whole moment at the end of thriller bark. And his rivalry with Sanji is heavily informed by the fact that Zoro *is actually stronger*, close though it might be. Sanji and Nami retain their roles-Nami as the navigator and money person, Sanji as the cook and a fighter. But I also think they messed up Usopp in an important way. Without the caltrops and other scheming in his arc, he's not portrayed as a smart guy. Usopp eventually does become the heart of the group as well as a non-useless fighter, but until the end of the next arc, the group doesn't have a dedicated strategist. Nami is smart, but she's not the brains. The next two members are very smart, but they're not quite strategists. We got a tiny moment with Usopp, but I think we could have used more, especially in his own arc, since it's not clear why Luffy invites him to join the crew at all at that point.
Zoro already had plenty of action in the season though. By Arlong Park, I felt it was more important to give Sanji a spotlight to really integrate himself into the crew. It was cool to see Sanji and Zoro team up against Kuroobi with Sanji getting the final blow in.
I thought this was a good adaptation but I didn't like some of the changes. One example was the Syrup Village arc. Kuro felt more like a "generic villain" and Usopp's place on the crew felt less earned.
What about Nami’s village not being aware about her deal with Arlong? Especially her sister? That would mean her tattoo now makes no sense in the live action because Nojiko had her tattoos as a silent solidarity with her sister in the manga. They even removed Genzo’s importance as Nami’s father figure to her childhood. I understood that they had to remove Hachi and Moomoo bc of budgetary reasons but damn. Also they removed Ussopp’s character development in his village too.
I’ve only ever watched a few episodes of the anime decades ago in my youth when it began airing on Cartoon Network. I recently binged the live action series and I’m hooked. For the bits I remember of the main crew I felt that the actors did a great job with their characters, and the show is fantastically written and paced.
I was startled by how good the Netflix adaptation was. I'm not a One Piece hardliner fan. I watched it for a good while, but stopped at some point because it really felt like the story had no endgame - it was just the same basic formula over and over with no long term plot per se. I know I'm going to get yelled at by loyalists, but that's how I felt. The anime really wastes alot of time on things that don't matter to pad runtimes, and while I forgave some of that at first...it eventually wore me out. The live action adaptation feels BETTER because it's tighter and more focussed. That's necessary by nature, but hard to do and do well, and this show does it while the other Netflix anime adaptations did not. Too many of them were either too literal, failing to realize live action and anime aren't the same and some adapting has to happen...or they took too many liberties and didn't even feel like the same show or same characters. One Piece walked the line perfectly by focussing on the source material's main strength - fun, interesting characters. The anime may have gotten lost in navel-gazing, but the live action show did not. Everything matters. Every scene, every beat.
Well, as a fan of anime, when someone said One Piece is good, I went to watch it. After season one, I couldn't understand why people like it. It's so-so compared to others like Demon Slayer. I kept watching until episode 150 and still think its ok. I will keep watching it, but I don't know. It's hard to watch anime back in the days with all these fillers... BUT... when watching the live action, I was very happy with it, and decided to rewatch some of the episodes from the first season to compare it to and appreciate it alot more then before.
I get you. I was mostly just a casual fan but it got me at the Skypiea arc and then it was hit after hit with each of the canon arcs for me (except G8, which was amazing even tho it's a filler, but Foxy arc can disappear).
I liked Koby's (and by extension Garp's) role being expanded and given focus from a world building perspective does a lot to show the audience that the Marines aren't just a gang of easily corruptible thugs with uniforms. Because I felt that a LOT on my initial watch of the anime.
As a die hard anime and one piece fan, I turned it off after 15 minutes. When luffy was shoveling water out of his small boat, if he touched the water he'd be weak and powerless, but the show did not show that and he was fine while touching sea water.. I'm not sure what the anime scene was, but I don't think they got the fine details down like oda has
Just want to put it out here, but anyone have an idea abt how they should handle the future flashback stories? Specifically so Luffy's child actor doesn't age out, I mean. Personally, I think they should go ahead and film his whole back story during season 2 (or even hold off until season 3 if they want to wait to see s2 results), but even if we may not see the bulk of it until whenever they show Marineford (if they do), I still say they should go ahead and have his whole back story filmed early if they still want to use the same child actor.
Both are great in their own right. If course the anime and manga for being the originals. Buy the netflix "irl" is great, I thought it'd have lame avatar graphics but they did really good on this,
One of my only gripes about the live action series (and really, it's only a small gripe) is that they tried to make Buggy too edgy and too much like modern-day Joker. In the original series, Buggy was a high-strung loudmouth, trying to ACT like a fearsome big-shot pirate... while being at heart a coward who fights dirty, then runs away or gets other people to fight for him if that doesn't work. He knows he's out of his league, but tries to bluff his way into fame and respect anyways. That personality is what made him such a great comic relief badguy, and imo way more interesting than a Joker knockoff in a pirate hat. (My only other gripe is that they got perfectly average-sized men to play big brutes like Ax Hand Morgan, like, were all the big beefy actors on vacation that week?)
Good enough for season 1 I think. So they can ask for bigger budget in the long term. Hope they included more the impact factor from the source material. 1. coby first time stand up to Alvida. 2. Zoro get tie up for 6 days then get release by luffy and coby. Stop watching at episode 2 because lack of this
About 2 weeks ago, I tried watching episode 1.... 5 minutes in, I thought it was cheesy and gave up on it.. Tonight, randomly I decided to give it another go and I'm so glad I did.. I just started episide 6 and IMO I'm convinced, this is probably the greatest animation to live action series ever created 🤷🏽♂️ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
While I understand the reasoning for having Garp be the main Marine, my issue with it, will be the powerscaling later on. Having Smoker be the main Marine next season will be kinda silly when he was only a Captain at the time, mulitiple ranks below Garp.
Garp is shurely ocupied training Corby and Helmeppo in the second season. They will find a way to keep him on distance to make Smoker work as a threat to the strawheads.
Im sorry, but Garp in season 1 is THE WORST addition in the series…. Why? First it took time away from what really mattered in the East Blue Saga, the development of the Core Five Straw Hats, the protagonists of the entire series. Second it most certainly took away budget to add more important characters to the story of each crew member, like Jango and the Ussop Pirates, and Genzo and the Coco Village people. Third, the ending of that plot line was predictable after a certain point and it took away from the real battle of the saga which was Luffy v Arlong and the emotional weight behind that fight, to me it almost ruined the finale of Arlong Park. Talking about Arlong Park, they did that arc dirty with the cut of the importance of the villagers and Genzo… I was ok with most of the changes, but what they did to Arlong Park was not great. Because at the end of the day if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, and Arlong Park you didn’t have to fix anything…
For those who want a shorter abridged story, I would say the Live Action Adaptation delivers on a decent retelling of the story with little filler. But the Manga is perhaps the best version as you don't have to wait through episodes of filler just to get to the main point. Remember the Anime adaptation of the Manga version often had to have filler episodes to help the Manga Artist get ahead of their story before the Anime adaptation catches up with it.
i honestly dont like any of the changes they do in the live action adaption, one piece is a series about the strawhats which shows there impact on the world by referencing other characters they interacted with before, characters like buggy and koby getting more screen time defeats the purpose of them showing up later in Lougetown and Enies lobby repectively
I didnt like live action garp. He was to serious and crazy bout capturing luffy. In the anime he was always laughing at what luffy was doing. He didnt want to chase him after water 7 so he decided to do it himself without his crew so they could get away. But in live action he is dead set on catching luffy and never really laughs except for random crazy laughs that wasnt what he normally do. The other changes i can handle that one i didnt like.
While I liked many changes, what really upset me is how the events of Cocos are swapped. Nojiko and the villagers not knowing Nami's plan all along and the shoulder stabbing after the villagers went off to kill Arlong really takes the wind out of that emotional scene + it happening at night
Introducing Garp so late in W7 doesn't really make sense. Garp, arguably one of the most famous marine having same full name as Luffy, and none of the crews (especially Nami and Robin) realized it doesn't make sense. Having the revelation pulled earlier was a good decision since Luffy isn't really well known yet. I do have criticism with Garp's characterization, but I can respect that if that's what the LA was aiming for.
I also can appreciate that an early reveal can give more of foundation to support the whole of Ace's story and possibly give more weight to Dragon's future character reveal.
THANK YOU JUSTICE FOR MOO MOO SHE WAS THE BEST COW EVER More seriously, amazing video thank you for doing this it really brings out the changes yet you worded so well how they do work for the live action
I'd say a correction for don krieg's purpose in the original story, while it's true that he doesn't have personal connections with the characters, he's not just a measuring device, he's actually the catalyst in which sanji ultimately decides to join luffy because of what luffy displayed in their fight.
I know an actor that auditioned for Buggy. He did not know it was for One Piece or the character's name. He was given a generic name and how to play the character. The actor they went with is nothing like what he was given about how the character should be played.
Idk i thought Cowboy Bebop did a pretty good job of it too. But thats just me. Idk why people hate on that one. It seemed to be just as good as one piece to me. But those are definitely the only two that i like. Any other live action anime is usually trash.
Luffys thick eye brows and lack of ADD , meaning Luffy is literally like having Jack Sparrows compass in your hand is how Luffy behaves(unpredictable, unprepared, but faithful.). Zoro isn't as happy/joyful as he sould be. Yes Zoro isn't feeling the pirate gig, but he normally just doesn't speak(neutral and wise) and reacts angry under Luffy dumb decisions or Nami punches. Nami is suppose to crap on everybody. Honestly pulling her abusive behavior back is understandable, but she is literally the captain. Usop is Usop.
Never saw the anime, but saw the show, just finished it actually. And there are hits and misses in every episode. Many cast-members seems to be new actors that never been acting before. Kudos for most of them being interesting and adding personality to them. Never saw the bad guys being a threat really, but the clown dude was more of a menace than fishface for example. Excuse me for not remembering their names.
One nice part about adapting an anime into live action is that characters are much more distinct and unique. In anime, the creators have the freedom to draw the characters as uniquely and interestingly as they like. When the LA then adapts those distinct features, it makes the characters easier to remember and be intrigued by. In traditional film, I get so lost when there are 10 white guys important to the plot, all who have different roles. They all look the same to me. Unless they're extremely memorable actors, having characters that look so similar is simply annoying. In the anime, they have extremely distinct hair colors/styles, tattoos, clothes, scars, ears, noses, makeup, accessories, etc.
"adapting an anime into live action is that characters are much more distinct and unique." Totally. However it can also work in reverse too for example there's actually videos showing that every Dragonball Z male is literally the same face just with a different hair style. Talk about lazy.
Its good that the general consensus is 80% positive atleast..many longtime fans accepted the changes, only the purists discarded the show entirely, while some healthy feedback came from a place of love.
Some really good changes like speedrunning ussops part. Arguably worst part of starting one piece. Some baffling changes with namis village not knowing about her deal with arlong change for change sake because the emotion and power of them wanting her to run and leave them and live her life is gone. ( small unimportant one is i dont like what they did for mihawks voice)
I think there will be less BW people (only the core group including miss all sunday who becomes very important later on) i think alvida will look the same as she did before she ate the devil fruit that made her slim (she could still have the devil fruit power, but it wont change her appearance), i think they leave out the island with the giants (but i think that how nami got sick) probly find out about luffy's father sooner but luffy won't until probly s3 at water 7
Who knows but they have to include Chopper with Drum Island, Miss All Sunday at some point, Smoker Baraque Works and probably Ace. They will include Louge Town, Drum Island might be 2 episodes and little Garden might include reverse mountain stuff and Whiskey Peak stuff making it 2 episodes and then Alabasta you can do in like 5 episodes if you push it. There is a lot I mean they probably will combine it in different ways but that is still cutting and changing quite a bit. @@clintbrew
They have to devote at least half the end of the season to Alabasta. There’s no avoiding it. We need chopper’s island, but Little Garden isn’t all that necessary; They could easily make Nami sick without it. Im not sure what they’ll do with mr.3 and mr. 5 since they play a part in it. Also, its when Sanji makes contact with mr 0, but that can happen anytime. Additionally, Little garden was the reason Robin let the strawhats go, so I wonder how they’ll handle that. The bounty hunter island is important too because it introduces ViVi and the baroque works, but they could always do that with Baboon. Baboon, the whale, cannot be skipped, mostly because it connects back to Brook. (They’ll need a hell of a lot of CGI, because they’d piss of a lot of people if they skip it) Of course they need to do the final island in the east blue, because of Smoker, the relevance to Gold D Roger, introduction to Dragon, and etc. The calm belt scene may be hard to do. Extra but not really necessary, they gotta show all the strange weather conditions of the grand line. After all, it is vital to the story as the pirate graveyard. *Future looks bleak ngl* From here on out, things are so outlandish that it may wind up making or breaking season 2… either because they skipped it… or they execute it very poorly. It all depends on the budget and effort.
Well they need to include Chopper and Drum Island which will bee 1-2 episodes, louge town needs to be included but could be one episode, Reverse Mountain and Little Garden should be if not needs to included some way could be 1-2 episodes as they probably cut Whiskey Peak. That leaves hopefully 5 episodes for Alabasta. Which you can in theory accomplish Alabasta in 5 episodes with the key points being Alabarna, Rain Dinners, Navanoha that one place they dock. It would be better with more time, but you probably need 5 episodes at least and definitely a bigger budget. @@anonymouslyforgotten5592
I didn't like the change that Coby and Garp arrived at Cocoyashi Village after the Arlong Park Arc. That basically means that Luffy didn't have to beat Arlong because Garp would have beaten him and saved the town probably. Aside from that, I really enjoyed it all.
@@Adonis.D.Prince Luffy defeating Arlong was the final reason that Luffy got his first wanted poster. Had Garp defeat Arlong, Luffy would not get his wanted poster until later. While Garp’s inclusion in East Blue can be debatable story decision, it does allow the Marines to have a more active role during the East Blue saga.
Not really true concerning Johnny and Yosaku. They served to illustrate why having someone to make food is imprtant on a ship. You know the scorbut thing ^^. Without them, Sandji came out of nowhere ^^. Even Ussop in the live action is more justified : Let's ake the guy who know the ship with us ;).
Oh it will get a second season, anything beyond that is only if another company is paying for it. Netflix produced and owned series only likes 2 season shows.
I knew it would be good, told me mate; ain't no body got time to watch 2000 odd episode, so the live action is going to be a banger to bring in new viewers
I loved the changes for the most part (though feel that Zorro's backstory was underserved & overly condensed)... I most specially appreciated Merry's story change as it not only gives credibility that Kuro is still deadly after his hiatus and serves as a great reason for Luffy to name their ship.
@@masdzulfikar6201 no, what they showed was the bare minimum... they didn't show all the hard work he put into becoming the best swordsman (the fact that he's won against everyone he's faced before then was also lost) & a short montage of his daily training regimend would have explained why he was so disheartened by his loss to Kuina (showing quick shots of training-defeat-training-defeat could've nailed their scene on the cliffside home & have taken just a few minutes)
@@tophlaw4274 The manga didn't show that either. Luffy, Sanji and Nami has more important thing that got cut/changed. Zoro is the only one that got expanded.
@@masdzulfikar6201 ah, I see... well my frame of reference is the anime & it was quite fleshed out there which made me appreciate his warrior's journey a bit more.
Im not 100% sure but i think Iceburg made an apperance at the Baratie, when he talked to Coby and Helmepo are waiting for Garp at the out side bar. I could be wrong but the hair style/ color made me think.
I just watched reactions of the One Piece Netflix show to get a general idea if I’ll like it or not, and so far the live action show looks good that I’ll be watching the full episodes soon. If I end up loving it, I’m on the fence if I should watch the anime. Main reason being because I know purist are going to see the original show through nostalgic, ruby tinted, beer googles and think it’s perfection with no mistakes. Case in point, people claiming Detective Pikachu is a terrible movie but thinks the Pokemon anime is great when I’m thinking “are we watching the same thing”? The anime is a shallow, kids show without any character growth, development or even a story that exist solely as a shameless commercial for the products. The entire thing from characters to story can be summed up with “got to catch them all” aka by all our games and merchandise. I think it was after seeing that godawful Mewtwo movie that the horrid writing of the anime became blatantly apparent to me and that every episode is the same crap over and over again with the only difference between which pokemon gets to be the next commercial advertisement of the episode. Anyways back to One Piece the anime, some things I’m both reading and seeing makes me really on the fence if I want to watch the anime. 1) The anime kind of has that obnoxious art style. 2) Heard the show, much like many pre-streaming shows with 20+ episode seasons, drags like hell. 3) Many of the fight scenes kind of feels like it has “Power Rangers in rock quarry” syndrome. In which all the fights feel like they take place in the same location. Which also leads to... 4) Anime Luffy really comes across like ‘power self insert fantasy fulfillment number #4,908,120’. Where basically the rest of the crew don’t even need to exist as Luffy will just solo literally the entire enemy forces by himself. And if he can’t do it initially, no clever thinking like the live action show demonstrated is needed. He’ll just scream a lot until he reaches his next power level and just beat the enemies through sheer brute force. Yeah I’m very over this type of storytelling and don’t need to see it again especially after watching Dragonball Super aka Goku and Vegeta gets to fight literally everyone while everyone else go disappear off to the sides.
@@OtakuScandal After writing that, I actually decided to just borrow the anime since it's easier for me to get a hold of it for free. Not bad at the moment. That filler episode with the dog protecting the pet store because that's the last memory of his master I really liked. There are some overly silly things in the original story that the live action show did better, but so far it's not turning me off yet. I think I'll watch until Arlong Park just so I don't spoil myself on any possible season 2 storylines unless the release date is that long. Anyways guess I'm diving into One Piece.
@@entertainmentfan1463where are you now at One Piece? FYI the dog story is canon and not filler, filler means it's not mentioned in the original manga and it's a story created by other writers. One Piece is nothing like Pokemon or Dragonball lol 😂😂 you should explore more different type of anime to understand it. Pokemon is kids rated and it's based off Pokémon game series so of course it resets itself each season as it's based off a game not manga. Dragon ball is like an old anime, a predesessor to newer Shonen anime with the first demonstration of power scaling although the main storyline was completed way earlier and the rest is just an expansion imo not so story focus. There are many Anime that is story focused and One Piece is one of them. A lot of anime have storyline from start to finish just like any drama series you watch, it's not like the simpsons or SpongeBob squarepants unless you're watching just plain comedy, anime is just a media to watch not a genre after all
Well there 2 more strawhats (and possibly reference to another) coming in season 2 but the 2nd new member will probly be the cliffhanger and i hope they reenact the scene on how the new 2nd member joins
I hope he goes away for a bit like I'm the anime.
@@xdrkcldx He’s way more likable in the live action than in the anime, though. I don’t mind him sticking around
He was the worst part of the series. Always looked like he pooped his pants and hoped that nobody would figure it out
@@Nicolas-gn7nzthats his character, hes a weak and fearful but determined character who was inspired by luffy to follow his dream, and by water 7 im sure he'll be a beast
He's also played by a woman and is way too pretty, which is an odd choice.
That's just my advice though.
just read the manga online and watch your favorite scene in the anime.
You’re welcome. I wish I could be in your shoes to rewatch the whole thing again without any knowledge
come along and join the crew!! All are welcome!
Hope you enjoy. One piece has lots of foreshadowing even with small little events.
My top 5 original OPLA scenes:
5. Kuro stabbing Kaya in the walls
4. Buggy (head) temporarily became part of Straw Hat Pirates
3. Mihawk's introduction call, slaying Don Krieg's crew at the beach
2. Zoro/Baroque Works' introduction, killing Mr 7
I loved that Nami stayed behind at the Baratie to watch Zoro's duel with Mihawk. It definitely felt she had more investment in the crew.
Actually I lied my no. 1 original OPLA scene is Luffy straddling Zoro 🥰
@@Evil_Vegan I shouldn't have enjoyed that scene as much as I did 😂
Dude just said that the live action made improvements on the source material. By improvements he means downgrades.
Now this is how you adapt a manga into a live action show. Shoot, even into an anime. Charting your own course while still hitting major story eats that doesn’t who the characters are and what their about. Live action show runners should take note 👏
and i know its also funny that emily rudd who plays live action nami has appeared on the nerdist channel before as daenerys in blank page
@@danielhakimiit wasn't about the food
They also showed Zeff being a great pirate due to Luffys grandpa talking about it and Sanji flashbacks we still get to see that Zeff is a great pirate/person.
Comparing pacing between the anime and live action show, the show is moving very, very fast. They are skipping over a lot and it works as the anime does have a lot of filler.
Really does. Some scenes take longer than they should not just that but the LA episodes are longer.
A little much 10 ep would have been better if they skip too much people will lose attachment like they did in other series.
I agree on that. Their relationship was badly developed.
And Nojiko is randomly black now, which seems like another odd casting choice.
@@eleven9286 to be fair, Nojiko had a darker skin tone than Nami in the anime, so black ist not that far off, and it kinda fits for Bellemeres patchwork family
They tried to pull an Itachi move
(again, only have the anime as a reference, not sure that was a thing in the original manga source)... though I suppose it's the world we live in
A couple notes:
12:07 The LA Mr. 7, including his apparence, is canon in the original as well since Oda did give more information in the SBS (a Q&A section of the manga) about Zoro first encounter with Baroque Works. Still it was great to actually see the fight for the first time.
13:56 In the manga Garp does appear during East Blue saga in the cover stories, although the story itself does go into the next saga
One change that I personally disliked was Usopp fight with Chuu. After he fakes his death in the original he was a moment of great courage that he notice he cant keep the way he is and lying about his fight would not do which makes him get up and call Chuu - in the LA that emotional scene is missing so him calling Chuu was no weight and is kinda stupid
I'm hoping for flashbacks in season 2 ... like some conversational exposure to the moment
11:27 "Mooo"ving on , I see it, does he see it?
Also there’s no fake out deaths anymore. For example, Kuro actually killed Merry the butler( lawyer in live-action)
Maybe now that we have a successful one they can get better budgets and more episodes.
bro they have a realy big budget even bigger than the game of thrones
Hope they'll improve in Season 2
Zoro already had plenty of action in the season though. By Arlong Park, I felt it was more important to give Sanji a spotlight to really integrate himself into the crew. It was cool to see Sanji and Zoro team up against Kuroobi with Sanji getting the final blow in.
I thought this was a good adaptation but I didn't like some of the changes. One example was the Syrup Village arc. Kuro felt more like a "generic villain" and Usopp's place on the crew felt less earned.
Bc Kuro is a generic villain.
@@TSBJunkie Sure, but his LA counterpart felt even more generic.
This show was so fun! I am so happy it was renewed for season 2!
I’ve only ever watched a few episodes of the anime decades ago in my youth when it began airing on Cartoon Network. I recently binged the live action series and I’m hooked. For the bits I remember of the main crew I felt that the actors did a great job with their characters, and the show is fantastically written and paced.
I think you guys did a great job in breaking down all of the differences and providing reasons they happened.
Luffy was in my Spanish book from 1993. Not kidding, google it. El Niño de Hule.
I think it’s funny you keep saying if the series gets renewed. It literally blew up in popularity I think we are safe
Kuro doesn't completely disappear after Syrup Village in the anime. He appeared when Luffy got his first bounty.
Reason why the live action was good is simple.
Oda helped with the story in the live action and what changes were done.
After watching the anime, I just can’t watch the live action. It’s too confusing for me and the writing sucks.
I can’t wait for Season 2 and I hope most of it stays In tact and to see our beloved little reindeer doctor in real life.
Koby is eventually gonna become a certified bad ass after Garp trains him.
The live action made me start the anime. Never thought I would ever start this journey. I’m all in now.
I never seen the anime /Manga but I watched the liveaction series and really loved it it was well done.
Watch the anime
@@Jo-sg7pnAnime east blue saga was mostly weaker than netflix version. The only thing done much better in original is Arlong Park
Stop watching at episode 2 because lack of this
I wonder who they're getting to voice Chopper....
I hope its Tom Kenny or Billy West lol😅
hope we see more of Kuro too (besides ofc Buggy), they were great.. , adding Kuro to the Baroque Works assassin guild would make sense and work
About 2 weeks ago, I tried watching episode 1....
Lol are you always this fickle?
While I understand the reasoning for having Garp be the main Marine, my issue with it, will be the powerscaling later on. Having Smoker be the main Marine next season will be kinda silly when he was only a Captain at the time, mulitiple ranks below Garp.
Garp is shurely ocupied training Corby and Helmeppo in the second season. They will find a way to keep him on distance to make Smoker work as a threat to the strawheads.
Buggy is definitely the best part of Netflix One Piece.
Honestly, i completely forgot about Momoo. Instead i missed Hatchan :(
I wonder how they will handle his reoccurence?
Personally, I really enjoyed Garp, Koby, and Helmeppo's expanded role because they're among my favorite Marine characters.
Talking about Arlong Park, they did that arc dirty with the cut of the importance of the villagers and Genzo…
I was ok with most of the changes, but what they did to Arlong Park was not great. Because at the end of the day if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, and Arlong Park you didn’t have to fix anything…
The Kuro story suffers from a lack of Django.
Only thing I dont know is why they changed Going Merry's mouth to be open. Every other change to it looks good but why the mouth?
My favorite part in live action was about Usopp's dream. That was well articulated! 👍
i honestly dont like any of the changes they do in the live action adaption, one piece is a series about the strawhats which shows there impact on the world by referencing other characters they interacted with before, characters like buggy and koby getting more screen time defeats the purpose of them showing up later in Lougetown and Enies lobby repectively
THANK YOU JUSTICE FOR MOO MOO SHE WAS THE BEST COW EVER
More seriously, amazing video thank you for doing this it really brings out the changes yet you worded so well how they do work for the live action
I think this is the first time an anime live action is actually good because they’re usually bad and this one’s actually enjoyable to watch.
Idk i thought Cowboy Bebop did a pretty good job of it too. But thats just me. Idk why people hate on that one. It seemed to be just as good as one piece to me. But those are definitely the only two that i like. Any other live action anime is usually trash.
I kinda want to see Buggy's actor get a chance at a live action Joker
He’s been on agents of shield
Merry didn't die in the anime, but he did in the anime stabbed by Kuro
Buggys actor has definetly done stand up comedy
Never saw the anime, but saw the show, just finished it actually. And there are hits and misses in every episode. Many cast-members seems to be new actors that never been acting before. Kudos for most of them being interesting and adding personality to them. Never saw the bad guys being a threat really, but the clown dude was more of a menace than fishface for example. Excuse me for not remembering their names.
Buggy "now that's a laugh... I said that's a laugh" becoming a meme now LOL
"adapting an anime into live action is that characters are much more distinct and unique."
Totally. However it can also work in reverse too for example there's actually videos showing that every Dragonball Z male is literally the same face just with a different hair style. Talk about lazy.
He didn't say it, but zeff eating his leg was a much better arc to me than him just losing it and wasting away
Its good that the general consensus is 80% positive atleast..many longtime fans accepted the changes, only the purists discarded the show entirely, while some healthy feedback came from a place of love.
It was waaaayyy better than I expected
Some really good changes like speedrunning ussops part. Arguably worst part of starting one piece. Some baffling changes with namis village not knowing about her deal with arlong change for change sake because the emotion and power of them wanting her to run and leave them and live her life is gone.
( small unimportant one is i dont like what they did for mihawks voice)
It did season 2 is announced
introducing garp was a bad idea imo
Really liked the Toby character development in the life action.

I think it needed 2 more episodes. Some stuff was too cut down.
I love the anime, the manga and the live action too😍 my favorite character is Sanji 😍
I would have just had Garp's personality be closer to the manga/anime
Minority Hunter Zoro
Uusob could have at least had a slight lying longer nose THAT is the one thing I hate
was very surprised. I loved this show.
I really expected to see how Zoro fight with 3 swords, guess it's impossible IRL.
TBH I really disliked all the extra marine bits. Thought they were boring and skipped through them for the most part.
Curious about the changes that will come to season 2
(They’ll need a hell of a lot of CGI, because they’d piss of a lot of people if they skip it)
Of course they need to do the final island in the east blue, because of Smoker, the relevance to Gold D Roger, introduction to Dragon, and etc. The calm belt scene may be hard to do.
Extra but not really necessary, they gotta show all the strange weather conditions of the grand line. After all, it is vital to the story as the pirate graveyard.
*Future looks bleak ngl*
From here on out, things are so outlandish that it may wind up making or breaking season 2… either because they skipped it… or they execute it very poorly.
Luffy beating Arlong is what caused Luffy to get his first bounty poster.
@@strikerstratos Wasn't Garp chasing Luffy regardless? He went to Baratie after Luffy, and then went to Cocoyashi, right? Or am I missing something?
@@Adonis.D.Prince I mention Luffy getting his first bounty poster. How is that related to Garp?
@@strikerstratos you weren't responding to my original comment about the change with Garp? You were just randomly mentioning his wanted poster?
@@Adonis.D.Prince Luffy defeating Arlong was the final reason that Luffy got his first wanted poster. Had Garp defeat Arlong, Luffy would not get his wanted poster until later. While Garp’s inclusion in East Blue can be debatable story decision, it does allow the Marines to have a more active role during the East Blue saga.
A muppet Chopper! Like Farscape good or even better! I’m thinking an improved Rigel type muppet. 😁
Not really true concerning Johnny and Yosaku. They served to illustrate why having someone to make food is imprtant on a ship. You know the scorbut thing ^^.
Without them, Sandji came out of nowhere ^^. Even Ussop in the live action is more justified : Let's ake the guy who know the ship with us ;).
even with the budget, they had to change things. What an insanity. 😅
Merry also dies, right thats a change?
Oh it will get a second season, anything beyond that is only if another company is paying for it. Netflix produced and owned series only likes 2 season shows.
Garp is the only change I can't agree on. Rest is okay, I guess.
I knew it would be good, told me mate; ain't no body got time to watch 2000 odd episode, so the live action is going to be a banger to bring in new viewers
Chopper, sure, but consider: Miss All Sunday.
I loved the changes for the most part (though feel that Zorro's backstory was underserved & overly condensed)...
I most specially appreciated Merry's story change as it not only gives credibility that Kuro is still deadly after his hiatus and serves as a great reason for Luffy to name their ship.
Zoro's backstory actually expanded with it getting a funeral & sword inheritance scene. There's not much to his backstory in the first place.
The bartender?
I could not agree more about Momoo ❤
I've missed jango
I’d say just read the manga. Straight for the source, Goda himself
A lot of anime have storyline from start to finish just like any drama series you watch, it's not like the simpsons or SpongeBob squarepants unless you're watching just plain comedy, anime is just a media to watch not a genre after all
I like live action Buggy he has the just amount of sliminess
I hope the other crew members are introduced quicker than in the manga
Well there 2 more strawhats (and possibly reference to another) coming in season 2 but the 2nd new member will probly be the cliffhanger and i hope they reenact the scene on how the new 2nd member joins
I'd rather prefer One Piece to have actors that aren't big names.
HOW DARE YOU BLINDSIDE US WITH THAT FUTURAMA CLIP THAT WAS CRUEL AND UNCALLED FOR
