  • "The Fields of Athenry" is an Irish folk ballad set during the Great Irish Famine or Great Irish Hunger (1845-1850) about a fictional man named Michael from near Athenry in County Galway who has been sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay, Australia, for stealing food for his starving family. It is a widely known and popular anthem for Irish sports supporters.
A big thank you to my Bulgarian friend, Peter Pesev of Unisound Studios, for producing the excellent backing track.
I hope you enjoy my instrumental version!

Nice playing, but those backing tracks are so dreary.

This piece of music was my granddad’s favourite but he died last Christmas so I’ll always listen to different people play it with different instruments and so far this is the best one yet 😊😊😊❤❤❤

7-25-2021 I love all your music Geoff, but this song has to be my favorite !!!! Touches me every time I hear it !!! Can't help but feel sorry for people, even if it was something that happened long ago !! I get emotional for the people I come across each day that suffer for various undeserved reasons. Guess I'm just an old "softie" !! Larry L.

Dear Geoff: I am the third of five children in my family. 2 siblings older...2 siblings younger. About 6 months ago my youngest sister developed gallbladder cancer. Gallbladder was removed. Still large tumor in duct. Couldn't remove, dangerous, too large, also next to major blood vessel. Did radiation and chemo. Was OK for a while. About last two or three months she went steadily 'downhill'. She died very early morning of Jan. 13th. Funeral this Tues. 25th. She was 65. She would have turned 66 on Mon. 24th. Hope all is well with you !! P.S. I turn 72 on Thurs. 27th. always thinking of you, and greatly appreciating your friendship and music !!! Larry L.
