"I'm not going to show this fully because it is quite painful" is an honest and wonderful way to put it. I have used far too many freehand masks and it is quite dull. I'm glad they don't try to sugar-coat the boring bits or hide them away because sometimes the boring skills are the most important to learn
I know there are many people here who don't have hitfilm express but are trying to learn it . To these people , I know you are finding it difficult to understand , but trust me once you download hitfilm and get your hands on it , you will also find these tutorials very understandable and awesome.
Good tutorial! But a quick point on terminology: "Rotoscoping" means tracing a filmed object frame by frame. It was originally used in hand-drawn animation to create figures that moved realistically based on a filmed performance by a live actor or dancer. (A "rotoscope" itself was a special drawing table that included a projector and rear-projection screen.) For example, a famous 1932 Betty Boop cartoon employed rotoscoping to create an animated walrus that danced like Cab Calloway, and in Disney's Sleeping Beauty a live actor's movements were rotoscoped to animate the prince as he wakes the heroine with a kiss. Nowadays it's common to use rotoscoping to create or refine an animated mask (previously called a "traveling matte" in the film industry). Unless I missed something, the only actual use of rotoscoping in this video is at the end, when you animate a mask around a woman to put her in front of a title.
This video was SO helpful!! Thank you! I have been using Hitfilm for awhile now and have not been able to figure out how to use the mask tools and how to rotoscope in general.
My understanding of the word rotoscoping is that it's tracing over live footage frame by frame to make super realistic animation like what was done in Snow White or the original Prince of Persia games.
The only reason to "thumbs down" this video is because there's only one more in the series! :( This has been awesome - and would love more beginner tutorials!
9:10 I highly doubt I'll get an answer after four years of this video being out, but couldn't you motion track the rotoscope points to the woman so they follow her automatically as she moves?
Hello there. That is an incredible presentation. I actually don't have a clue how to eliminate my video's static white background and supplant it with another. I know how to Mask and Demult, but that will not give me what I am after. For instance, I made a decent attempt to change the background of a video of Santa, moving before a white screen. Lets say I would like Santa to dance with another view behind him. How can I do that. many thx
This is great for streamers or beginners! I wish It was this easy for me, I tend to have about 15 effects just blending it in to the background in one shot I go a little overboard sometimes😂😂🤦♂️
Great tutorial! One question: How do you color correct over masks? Does it have to be fixed before you film, before you mask, or can it be done after? For example, you have multiple actors (yourself) and the shadows mess with the mask, showing the outline.
Hey this series is great, i have been a hitfilm customer since the begining, but have also been using Vegas pro for years, these tutorials are like a combination of beginner and medium advanced, love them all, went over the basics to some harder stuff, i think my next Web series video i am gonna try to make it a hitfilm exclusive....wish me luck, Pipefittermike, creator of the web series Pipe Trek, starting season 2.......
Hi friends I have a question about the creation of masks If I have to create a mask that runs a complex text or a complex figure, the only possible option is to create the mask with the freehand tool? There is no more efficient way to work? .. Create some full-hand complex masks can be a huge job, it seems to me.
I was wondering if there is a trick to remove the background by comparing, I mean think it as this: We have 2 image/footage one with the actor and one without the actor is there any way to remove the background by comparing two shoots. BTW appreciate your work thanks for awesome tutorials.
When I apply any related keying effect, background is becomes black instead of checkerboard. I dont understand actually I dont have to add any visual as baclground. Only need transparent background.
After making a composite shot, does it automatically go back to our main video? Or do we have to take the composite shot and manually put on the main timeline?
If you create the Composite Shot in the Media panel, it'll need to be added to the Editor timeline. If created by right-clicking a clip already in the Editor, the Composite will replace the clip. - Javert

When PewDiePie records a video, he is able to record his camera and screen at the same time. I've done the same with OBS by scaling my resolution to 3840x1080, and recording both my webcam and screen at 1920x1080. However, when I try to crop the video, it's pretty difficult. Is there a way you recommend to edit videos like this? So that we can have a screen that has both my webcam and desktop, then full desktop, then full camera? It'd be useful for when we try to create videos ourselves when it's meant for youtube
