I wonder what side to a story would justify this type of mistreatment.

The UAE has a legal system based on Sharia law, and it's important to respect the cultural and religious sensitivities of the UAE when discussing these issues. The UAE is a safe and stable country with a low crime rate. Let us wait for the full facts to come out before making any judgments. It is important to not generalize the UAE based on one allegation.

It's not just one allegation, it's a pattern of abuse. Serious human rights violations, unfair trials and the 'real risk of torture' are the reasons cited by the English High Courts as to why they will NOT extradite people to the UAE. This is not based on a single (proven and accepted) allegation. If the crime rate is "so low", why are the prisons overcrowded? What about Selina Waterman-Smith's gang rape? Was that recorded in their annual crime report?
