Is there a way to resize the file partition without un-mounting the partition.
partprobe command never works like this if its a fresh and new or rebooted the machine it works.
I had face issues like this below when running partprobe (The system was 125days up time) added the disk in VM runtime and tried to save the changes in partition
Error: Error informing the kernel about modifications
to partition /dev/sda1 - Device or resouce busy.
This means linux won't know about any changes
you have made to the /dev/sda1 until you reboot - so
you shuldn't mount it or use it in any way before rebooting.

Ideally machine should be rebooted after patching and we must patch the machine (server) on regular basis generally every month.
Partprobe command can only work for few changes which u make on disk not a lot, in this situation you will have to manually reboot the system.
