    Darrell has been such an inspiration to my family for years. We hope to meet him someday. We live in the foothills of Northwest Georgia and planted at least 7 different varieties of bamboo along the edges of our forest. In the early years, we actually killed bamboo plants, and it took quite a long while to get it established, and we've had it for 7 years and it is just beginning to really fill out into a gorgeous bamboo grove. This is the 1st year we've been able to comfortably use the culms for trellises and fencing. If you have the land, it is extremely valuable. We now hear new species of birds in the grove that we haven't heard in previous years, and it is the most cool, enjoyable place on our property to be on those hot, miserable muggy summer days.

    I have been saying for YEARS now, the skills that are shown here really need to be incorporated into our schools. Schools usually have plenty of ground available. Even home schoolers should be educated with these skills. Gets the kids outside and busy doing something they can be proud of. Life skills matter. Lost art almost. Thanks for sharing Darrell's garden and tips.

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Indeed, Aunt Jenny. Before the educational system was turned on its head in the recent two years, (indoctrination was already happening just not in our faces), and teaching life skills in class is a thing of the past. I remember 15 years ago helping in a school garden and was told by teachers (who have no more personal time to give outside class) that it depended on the parents, mostly women who have the luxury of not having to work one or two jobs who can come to schools and help develop and maintain gardens. And the success of the garden would change from class to class. I filmed a couple of school garden videos on one of the travel videos I used to do. There was an inspired group who developed a space beside the school in VA, but it's hard to keep things going when parents don't have the time or interest. Also, many people eat fast foods and processed foods, which doesn't help the mind to recognize the importance of healthy home-grown food. God bless.

      @@Latebloomershow Yes, I can see the difficulty in maintaining consistency in a program of that sort. I do see the need today due to our food supply chain issues. Might be great to send to some Home School groups to play for their kids and invite participation. Then they can send in their videos. I, again, thank you both for the great video.

    I lined up bales of hay that had been seating at a wedding in 2long rows on edge. Then pulled the hay apart a bit just to tuck in a cup of soil & a hosta or sedum baby. Egyptian onions, rose & lilac cuttings. The hay took care of everything on it's own....over the last couple of years it has decomposed to quarter height & the plants have become huge healthy plants to take to my daughter's new house where she will start gardens. STRAW that I had left over from my hens needs....it all started to grow in amongst the huge pots i lined trying to save on soil....and in the new beds around the patio I built last year. Just as bad as couch grass! Had to repot almost all of the 300 big pots I'd got ready to move to my daughter's. Thought it would be easier on the back w. less soil in those big pots....6 kiddie pools full and all around the woodpile & house foundation & infront of a fence...all will go! Too bad that most have bloomed already except the Deutzia & Lilies.

    You don't need a 16 ft flatbed to bring home a cattle panel. When you buy one, bring a large carabeener or some kind of clip (bailing twine works in a pinch). You can roll up a 16 ft cattle panel and tie it up in an 8 f5 truck bed.

Mine came tied into a circle with something sturdy. You can get it home in a regular bed easily. Just be careful releasing them, it’ll take two of you. Good video. 👍🏼

    We bought a 16’ cattle panel at Tractor Supply to use as an arch for running pole beans and peas. They placed it on it’s side edge, bowed in half, and put it in the back of our truck, it has an 8’ truck bed. Of course we used several tie downs and drove slowly.

    Wow, right down the road. Gainesboro here. I tell people all the time that we breed rocks very well in middle TN. We have 100 acre farm out here. I'm about to get kale, peas, asian cabbages, and brassicas going for the winter. I build my tomato cages the same way. I drop them over the hydroponic buckets and peppers are happy as well. I have a teepee for squashes, cukes, and melons. We raise meat rabbits along with other critters. We started with rabbits for the manure that really super powers the raised beds. Our herds of 15+ deer eat EVERYTHING. Tomatoes, peppers, squash, melons, you name it all the way to the ground, the entire plant. Agastache is a good plant for butterflies and bees. Just be careful with it, it can spread easily. It is kinda funny, Baxter and Cookeville got so much rain this year and we were missed with most of it. He isn't lying, our farm is ½ mile from the Cumberland river and a creek flows through the middle of the property. We have privet, japanese honeysuckle, and callary pear all over. Him and Roger Payne(used to run Miracle Mountain Farms)would probably get along quite well. I have lambsquarter, red veined sorrel, wood sorrel, and purslane all growing that I planted.

I am planting some sunset and scarlet runner tonight after the kids go to bed. I do A LOT of my gardening at night. When the moon is full I don’t need any additional light. It’s kinda romantic in a way. The sounds of the waves and the still of the night. I just quietly sow seeds everywhere. I sometimes forgot what exactly it was I planted. I planted it spread slowly over a year or so The Jacaranda was incredibly fast growing I bought that tree it was a lovely tree. I moved to Kentucky about that time. I love Bamboo, this was the very Large type. The only problem was wasps. Wonder if Daryl has wasp problems and how he handles them. I had also seen in Lake Wales an entire back yard fenced with the small bamboo Darrell mentioned. It looked great they had paths in it it was great for privacy and you don't have to mow.
    With the large bamboo you have to be careful where you plant it my nephew took some but put it too close to the house was starting to grow under the house foundation. He chopped it back though looked great in front yard though.

      Hay makes great garden beds. Where I put round bales for my horses, there is left a big ring of hay. The next year it is still decomposing, but the year after that it will be black topsoil and grow whatever seeds land in it + hay. If I don't have coastal in an area, I'll set the round bales there so that it will fill in.
      I take the old hay and bed the duck house with it. Then when I clean the duck house, I put that hay in the compost pile. This year, I bought huge crates - metal frames with wood sides and bottom. I put branches and pieces of tree trunks in the bottom. Then alternated layers of grass/clover/weeds caught in my lawnmower catcher and duck-saturated hay.
      Before I could even put any soil on top, a volunteer squash came up. The plant is HUGE and took over the entire 44x33x32 deep crate. The leaves are HUGE. And it is growing up on the trellis, too. I let the first fruit grow large because I wasn't sure what it was. Now I think it is a Costata Romanesco Zucchini from High Mowing Seed. The inside is golden, but I can't tell from the website or package whether that is normal for that or not.
      Now what I really want to do is create a hay ring from a round bale and build one of his bean teepees over it. :-)
      .
