As an experienced dog trainer, kneeing him is appropriate, not so hard to hurt him, but to throw him off balance and fall down, making it uncomfortable. Have one word as you’re doing it, mine is ‘off’. I don’t say down because that’s a different command for laying down. MOST importantly everyone in the household has to do the same, using the same commands and FOLLOW through. You can train a dog, the hardest thing is training the owner(s) 😂 example is my son who grew up learning dog training was awesome, yet with their dog and a house of family, they were on a separate page and the dog (big boy) jumps on everyone. He doesn’t do it to me, though he jumps in front of me lol! Another super important command is ‘leave it!’ for his safety (chasing something you don’t want, eating something bad , Or chicken poo and so on). He doesn’t need circus training, just good behavior basics. He’s adorable 💗🌸
When gunner jumps on you or your family you knee him on his chest and say no ! He will learn quickly but please be patient and consistent my German all learned 😀
I’m not sorry, but that is horrible advice. It was a popular method in the 70’s When you knee a dog in the chest, you can cause A pneumothorax (collapsed lung) to occur to your pet. Put a leash on him, which he should have anyway and step on the leash so he can’t jump or turn your back and then make him sit.
I did obedience training with my dog, 10 minutes a day so she would have my full attention and I’d have hers. One word commands, down, come, sit, as well as hand commands. Those classes made the world of difference.
You’re not seeing his progress because you’re too close to the situation. But I see gunner doing things that are livestock guardian dog traits. You have to be careful not to insert your fears and emotions into the situations. He is just establishing a rapport with Lily. She has to set her boundaries and she’ll take care of it herself.
Gunner and Lily are just playing and Lily is promoting the behavior ❤ I see Gunner stopping Lily from chasing the chickens Definitely put a knee up when he jumps up and say down! It’s all training❤ He is beautiful
GUNNER IS so beautiful and a nice personality!!! Please get another one so he can have company plus they will learn from one another and back each other up.. Read my story of Casper, the hero!!! Great Pyrenees all white like Gunner...saved his owners sheep and lamb flock from 11 aggressive pack of coyotes!! Casper killed 8 of them!!! He's being awarded The Best Hero Guardian dog of 2023!!! He was badly hurt, but thank the Lord, survived!!! They're looking for another GP for Casper for back up!!!❤
I've seen women homesteaders start out their videos putting on their makeup. Why is that necessary? I tune in to farm videos to watch caring for the animals, not makeup tutorials. Brandi you are true to life, I like that. Thank you for being true. God bless you and your family. ❤
Gunner is all puppy! But yes early training is the key. Feeding him first sounds like a good idea. "Leave it" will be the best command you can teach him. 💖💖💖
I really like you reiterate he is a young pup-will be almost two and you will have the best dog ever. Staying with one word directions is the ultimate in him remembering what you expect of him. I think yous will do well by him. Way to grow with the pup Brandi❤️ Too funny really- Lilli will teach him to back off. Our 4kb toy poodle taught our 80 lb chess or how to mind his manners-totally enjoy watching you with the critters with the pups-enjoy it all hon and don’t worry what everyone else thinks. Thank you for a terrific share❤️
Deja Vu...lol 😂 Gunners coming along nicely, there are a few things he could learn by just working with him. The breed is smart, he'll catch on with patience and regularity. Love ya'll ❤
Gunner seems to be doing good. He has to get adjusted to his new surroundings. Different animals and people he has to get used to. Lily is just asserting her dominance over Gunner. Glad Y'all got the chickens rounded up. GOD BLESS Y'ALL.
Gunner is a natural herder, He will herd all the animals by placing himself in front of them and pointing them in the right direction. Lol! and yes they will herd you too, if you let him. wonderful dogs for a farm. He will grow into it, but already shows his understanding of his job. Love your family, keep up the good work!
Consistent training with Gunner is the key and he is already showing signs of protecting the chickens which is great. You are right having many hands is much better. Thank you for sharing a busy day with us. Have a good evening now and may it be blessed
Gunner is doing a good job. He will learn not to jump. Just be patient. Seeing you sweating shows are doing a great job. A real homesteader. Great job.
Hi, from MI. Michigan, Gunner did not chase the chickens at Eddy's farm(At least I didn't see any of the Pups doing it)The pups would just lay back with all the animals///What was Lilly thinking when you gave her permission to chase a chic? WOW this is what her (ancestors) small dogs job was to get rid of small ground living critters/// He's going to be a really great LGD/// Greeting each farm pet is VERY good thing, LET's them know He is there to protect them as he gets older.
Your doing great Brandi with training Gunner. I agree knee to the chest and down works great. Also with calling him you need to keep it simple so he don't get confused. "Come" is a great word. Dogs like him learn it quickly.
A trick to help you train him, is don't say don't, because when you say that, your are picturing him jumping up, in your head. Animals see what you picture in your head, so you must always picture what you want him to do, in the positive, [like stay down and walk with me]never what you don't want him to do. I hope I'm making sense to you. Same with all animals, horses, even kids. Never use don't, always show him the thing you want him to do. Remove the negative from your head and he will willingly do what you want, because he wants to please. You will have him trained in no time. Help the girls to do the same when handling him, or all you animals. It is hard at first to remember, but once you see how well it works you will be so happy. It will become second nature to you. Same thing to get people to work WITH you! Blessing to you all!
To help with training I've found when he comes towards you to jump hold the palm of your hand downward and away from you towards his nose and say No Jump several times. He will associate the Actions and Words in a few days and you won't have to worry . Animals are smarter than people think. Good Luck . Hes a Beautiful Pup.
Did you know that dogs (and animals) only hear (or pay-attention) to the last 2 words you say??? (Their brains are equal to about a 2yr. old childs)!... Just a Lil info to help with training!...😊 I Love the horses and gunner is as cute as a button!... I'm 72yo and retired now & live in a campground...I do miss my farm! Good luck ya'll... 👌
Brandy you're one heck of a woman wouldn't feel bad if you don't get things done like you said you're holding the camera watching the dog everything else but you mostly get everything done you should be proud of yourself
Hello Brandi 👋 You did good with chores by yourself today & training Gunner! Is this what you call a chicken? I'm sorry i just had to say that. You all did great getting the last one. Go Lilly go!! Good job Hope! You were at the right place at the right time! Take care to you all. Besafe in this heat!! God Bless 🫶😉🤗🥰🙏🇺🇲
Training a puppy requires alot of time and patience and puppy treats! You have to work w them daily and several times a day. If you skip a day then you will have to start back to day 1. If you do this you will succeed! Get the puppy his own pool to cool off💯💯💯💯
Chad, I'm so glad you are going to get off Monsters. My nephew was hooked on Monsters, and he had to get off them because Monsters were messing with his stomach really bad. Maggie and possibly the other pigs like the mud because it keeps them cool and keeps the flies off them. Glad you were able to get Frank banned. LOVE FROM IOWA! 😊❤❤❤
A few years back I found a TH-cam channel. This lady in I think it was Wyoming trained livestock guardian dogs to herd chickens. She had like 200 free range chickens in an unfenced large field. I think she had 2 dogs in there. They would just calmly circle the field keeping them all together. I also saw a guy training a dog to bring chickens into the chicken house in the evenings. He would start the dog with one chicken. The dog was responsible to get that chicken 1st into the chicken yard then into the chicken house to roost for the night. He would gradually increase the number of chickens one at a time. When I watched the dog was up to 7 chickens. It was interesting because it seemed as though the dog could count. He would circle the chicken house to see if there were any stranglers. These were not Border Collies either. Dogs are a good choice because of coyotes, foxes and other predators 2 is a good choice.
A good command to teach gunner is off any time he jumps on anything or anyone.. he’s not going to distinguish between a person and a fence. It should be off anytime he jumps on anything. Down is the command for laying down. He will lean very quickly if everyone is consistent with the same commands. To keep him from being all over you when you are try to feed him teach him place. That means he sits out lays down in the same place. It will take a while and patience but everytime he gets up stop him and put him back in the same place. It will help if you have a release command like break. So when you are ready for him to eat you can say break and he knows he can eat now. Also it will help him if you just say come and not come on. One word commands works best. It will help to have treats to reward him when he does a good job and make it a big deal. Good luck!!
Brandi, I commend you in all you do on the homestead, and for the OKIE homestead organization. You are awesome! I’m glad you show the real life of the farm life. I’ve never lived like that…I’m a true city girl(71 yrs today). God bless you all. Love you folks!
For training Gunner, when you take out for training, have you tried putting him on a leash. It would be easier to core the him. Teach him to sit, then if he jumps up, just tell him to sit. It worked with our dog, maybe it will work for him.
I've never had a dog that hasn't cleaned up the feed that the horses drop. It's never was a problem because our horses were used to the dogs. Our stallion used to share his grain with cotton tail rabbits that run wild here in the desert.
Love you guys from traverse City Michigan I love Gunner how he how he hops with his back legs he looks like a bunny when you're calling him he's so cute he doesn't he runs with his front paws but he hops with his back legs I'm just not halfway through your video but I just wanted to comment on that you guys are an amazing family I just got off of work and I love watching your videos when I get home there so relaxing I so much want to be on your farm to see all the animals Brandy you're a sweetheart okay now back to the vlog❤❤❤
When training a dog you got to use the same example every time the same change the words of the commander you confuse the dog. He needs to be told no and if the consistent know doesn't work people have kneed dogs not to hurt him but to make him uncomfortable and they jump up and if they don't stop some people have stepped on their toes not hard so it's uncomfortable. God bless you all you love your animals but you got to be firm with them
Trying to herd farm critters is so much fun... IF you're watching someone else do it. 🙂 I'm waiting for a video where Dutch has to release I pole cat 🦨 from one of his traps.
I don't know if this will help. When it was time for my girls (chickens) to be put up, I would give them blueberries ,which was their snack for only getting put back in their pen. They got used to it every time, and they would come running when I shook the container of blueberries.
Trying to get two dogs to get along. It’s not gonna happen overnight just keep working and it will happen gradually and remember Turner is a guardian dog. Lily is a house, dog and a little dog thanks They are as big as any big dog. Practice makes perfect sometimes more practice is needed
there like watching my two, i too have a Yorky whos boss and a 10 month old great pry. who taunts my Reo whisky is my big dog, all i can say is good luck
When trying to train Gunner when he does what you've asked him to do PRAISE HIM just like when he doesn't do what you've told him to do tell him he's naughty or bad. Before I was told by the doctors. that I have MS I was a dog breeder & a Dog Trainer, so I have years of dog training under my belt. & you are right feed Gunner first. & while you're trying to work with him & train him first thing in the morning try & keep all the other dogs locked up & away from him so he can hear your commands & try to obey them without having to deal with any other dogs coming into the picture. Then later on when it's not training time, then let the other dogs out. It's hard enough when you have a puppy to try & train & obey but when there are other dogs trying to get into the mix, its almost impossible to learn & obey when they are trying to get you to play with them or they are trying to get the human to give them their love.... Training a puppy is a hard thing, its more like you have to train yourself first & then train them....
Put Gunner on a long training lead, then when you call him he will come back. Have treats or chicken Every time you call him he will come.. Best do it now than later...xx

Excellent advice
When gunner jumps on you or your family you knee him on his chest and say no ! He will learn quickly but please be patient and consistent my German all learned 😀
She needs to be more stern with him. More alpha all I see. She's too nice. Just saying plus these dogs are hard headed.
I think he’s too young and short to knee him in the chest. He probably has to get a little bit bigger for that to work.
Knee in the just is stupid.nudging gentle works better.
I’m not sorry, but that is horrible advice. It was a popular method in the 70’s

I see Gunner stopping Lily from chasing the chickens
Definitely put a knee up when he jumps up and say down!
It’s all training❤ He is beautiful
I would use off and save down for lie down.
Gunner was telling Lily not to chase the chickens! Gunner is lucky to have a loving family! ❤️
C, he's being a great Guardian dog all ready!!! ❤

For Lily born to be a couch puppy she sure is a big farm dog!💕💕
Horses are smart, they know there's food in the buckets. Pull the buckets away from the fence. Gunner is adorable!! 💙

Hopie is getting so big. This is the part where you blink, and you realize she's she's practically an adult. 🎉❤😊
Lilly...Miss Bossy Britches...LOL. Say it ain't so! Sweet little angel is bossy!? 😊 Best wishes from northern Illinois.

You look really good with no makeup!❤❤❤
You should buy food storage containers like the ones Jason at Coghill Farms uses. They are not real expensive. The lids screw on.
Gunner is a natural herder, He will herd all the animals by placing himself in front of them and pointing them in the right direction. HOPE to the rescue again,, another chicken caught, with Lily's help also!!! That was fun watching!!!❤
Gunner is doing a good job. He will learn not to jump. Just be patient. Seeing you sweating shows are doing a great job. A real homesteader. Great job.
Hi Brande, good video, Gunner is really growing and a really nice looking dog. He will com down with some training and as he gets older. 👍👍❤️❤️🇨🇦

It was a chicken chase anyway! I'm glad little Gunner wasn't involved! Love and blessings from this old Bama girl!❤❤❤

Lily is a typical yorkie. I love watching her in your videos.
The raccoons are probably knocking the lid off the can to get to the feed. Your going to have to get another feed can with a screw on lid.
Gunner is some handful at the moment, but he will soon settle down....animals, hens etc are all looking well...stay safe you all
Your doing great Brandi with training Gunner. I agree knee to the chest and down works great. Also with calling him you need to keep it simple so he don't get confused. "Come" is a great word. Dogs like him learn it quickly.
OMG! LILLY IS SO FUNNY! Watching HER TRY HER LITTLE HEART OUT TO GET TO THAT CHICK! LOL ❤😂
Lillie is standing her ground...he will learn!
You're so patient and kind with your animals I just love that❤❤
Gunner is growing🇺🇸❤️
Really enjoyed the Great Chicken Chase! Hope caught the Last Chicken! Yay!
Gunner is a beautiful puppy. Move the chicken tractor when they are roosting at night.
Enjoyed everything and good job Hope, for getting the chicken❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I think it’s so awesome how Lily got the chicken out of the bush lol

Good evening from Syracuse NY everyone thank you for sharing your adventures and your farm

Great video thanks. Chris from England
U definitely have a fun challenge with the puppy, lol! So glad it's not me! 😊

Happy Birthday, Pamela🎉 🎂 🎈 🎊 💐
(From, another city girl, 75) 🐾
I'd like how lily doesn't take anything from the German Shepherd or Gunner I'm very proud of you Lily❤
🇦🇺You may need to put the oats and bran in a white buckets where the lids are more secure.
If you have a wire floor in the chicken tractor you won’t have to round them up and it protects them from predators digging under.
That's a very smart idea!!! I get so much great info from these comments, smart viewers!!!
Great job Brandy that was a fun video👍
We catch our chickens with a net .. pool or fishnet … works great😊

Bungee cord across the lid from handle to handle is what I do for plastic cans. Or I use some bailing wire on the steel cans
When training a dog you got to use the same example every time the same change the words of the commander you confuse the dog. Brandie you do well. Lily and Gunner are just checking boundries. Love your videos
Looks like Gunner is doing his job by trying to stop Lily from chasing the chickens. May leave Lily inside while training Gunner.
Gunner is trying to keep Lily off the chickens
I just googled whether mini horses can be ridden. The answer is yes if under 70 pounds. It also said that mind's are quite adept at pulling a wagon.
Mrs. Dutch taking over the volg. Good job Brandy Aww Gunner, love the name. 🥰Or you can get Hopei to be your helper. Hi beautiful Girls. ❤🤟🙏
Miss Brandy😂..you are the best. I love y’all.
Try Raventree Ranch to see their GSDs! They are incredible! Judge is 160lbs last I saw.
And remember Gunner is still a puppy. A lot of what he does he does bc he is a puppy
Awesome job, Brandi!😀 Totally agreed with you.
Lol. You get him lily
Trying to herd farm critters is so much fun...
IF you're watching someone else do it. 🙂

lily definitely chases the chickens she for sure has a mean streak. Then you encourage her to keep chasing them.
Hope the chicken wrangler. 😂 just stick your knee up when Gunner jumps up.
there like watching my two, i too have a Yorky whos boss and a 10 month old great pry. who taunts my Reo whisky is my big dog, all i can say is good luck
