Once the Shah was overthrown, Khomeini's faction quickly moved to consolidate power, and the leftists found themselves sidelined, persecuted, and even executed. The revolution they helped bring about turned against them with a vengeance.
Fast forward to Europe today. The hard-left here seems to believe they have found allies in the Islamist groups. They see themselves as fighting against a common enemy-what they perceive as oppressive capitalist and nationalist systems. This partnership is underpinned by a shared use of populist rhetoric to rally support and undermine the existing social and political order.
The leftists are championing minority rights, which on the surface seems noble and necessary. But there’s a catch: the Islamists are leveraging these very rights to push for more protection for Islam. They are essentially trying to introduce de facto blasphemy laws under the guise of protecting minority rights. This is a slippery slope. In many cases, these Islamist groups do not extend the same minority rights to others in places where they hold power. They often suppress dissent and impose strict religious laws that go against the very freedoms the leftists claim to defend.
We’ve seen this playbook before. The left, by providing cover for the Islamists, is acting as the 'useful idiots'-a term Lenin is often credited with. They are unwittingly paving the way for an agenda that, if successful, will turn against them just as it did in Iran. Once the Islamists gain sufficient power and influence, the same leftist groups who helped them will likely be cast aside, if not outright persecuted. They’ll find that their supposed allies have no interest in the secular, progressive vision they hold dear.
So, the lesson here is clear: historical naivety can lead to dangerous alliances. The leftists in Europe, much like their Iranian counterparts in 1979, might soon find themselves victims of their own revolution, supporting a cause that ultimately seeks to undermine their very existence. The stakes are high, and the consequences of these alliances could be dire. It’s a scenario where history could very well repeat itself, and not in a good way.
