I think De Niro started breathing like this after he went "method" for "Raging Bull." Jack Lamotta had broken his nose as a boxer and had that sort of snorting breathing pattern. De Niro learned it so well that when he called Jake's ex-wife Vicky, she thought she was talking to Jake. I guess you really can get "stuck like that."

I must say I think that is the best De Niro impression i have ever seen. Superb.
I'm actually with him re Pacino. He's an amazing actor, but I've only ever seen him play one role- the kind of intense, brooding Shakespearian antihero prone to outbursts of emotion we see in Serpico, Scarface, Carlito's Way, Dog Day Afternoon, Scent of a Woman, the Godfathers (especially III), Hunters, Heat, The Irishman, etc. Don't get me wrong he's the best there is at that particular role, but (from what I've seen of his work at least) his range is limited to that and that alone. De Niro himself isn't the most versatile actor out there (in the way that, say, Daniel Day-Lewis or Joaquin Phoenix are) but he still has way more range than Pacino. He can play the unstable, loudmouth lunatic (Bloody Mama, Mean Streets), the more quiet, menacing psycho (Cape Fear), the everyman whose decisions and surroundings drive him over the edge (Raging Bull, Taxi Driver), and of course the "Robert De Niro role" (Heat, Meet the Parents, Joker, Godfather II, Goodfellas and a million other movies he's been in). He even showed he was more than capable in a more exaggerated, comedic role in The King Of Comedy. Sure, he's been typecast as "Robert De Niro" in most movies, but if you look at his earlier work (especially his pre-Goodfellas collaborations with Scorsese) he has a lot more range than people who grew up seeing him as the stereotypical low-key intimidating gangster type credit him with.
@@coolnamebro I know what you mean in some performances (mainly the archetypal De Niro pissed off old guy/lowkey threatening gangster ones), but I defy you to watch Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy or Cape Fear (Jesus, come to think of it has De Niro EVER done a movie that wasn't directed by Martin Scorsese?!) and come to that conclusion about him overall- and those are just the ones off the top of my head. Even in Goodfellas and Heat where it could be argued that he plays a more archetypal De Niro role, his range of understated expressions is amazing (I'm thinking particularly of the scenes where he decides to whack Morrie while Sunshine of Your Love by Cream plays in the background and where he seemingly tries to have Karen whacked or kidnapped at the clothing warehouse in Goodfellas and the scene in Heat where he makes the decision to risk everything for revenge while he's driving towards the airport, but there are numerous other examples). One role of his that I do think is somewhat overrated is in Godfather Part II. He does a very competent job of channelling Brando's Vito, but his performance doesn't really stand out for me in the same way that, say, Pacino's or John Cazale's do, and yet everyone always raves about that like it's his best-ever performance. I just don't get it since imo he's given way better and more memorable performances before and since. Still, while he's definitely been typecast way too many times and often lazily relies on a single performance type, there's no denying his overall range and talent...
Pacino isn't like that in his early films like Godfather, Scarecrow or Dog Day Afternoon. Some time around the making of Godfather Part 2 he developed the Al Pacino persona and he's been doing it ever since. Lots of hamming it up, presumably he's never had anyone around to tell him to dial things down a bit.
@@jshaers96 I agree that he definitely doesn't ham it up as much in his earlier films (haven't seen Scarecrow so can't comment on that one), and the difference between GF1 (pre-Pacino persona) and GF3 (very much height of Pacino persona- only movie where it comes across stronger than GF3 is Heat imo) is incredibly noticeable when you watch them back-to-back. But yeah, with two or three arguable exceptions in his early career (I would argue that by Serpico, and definitely by Dog Day Afternoon, we were already seeing the "Pacino persona" emerging and that was only like 4 years into his career) I'd say he's spent most of his life going full Pacino, so to speak, although it only really seemed to reach peak meme status (or whatever the equivalent of memes were back then) in the 90s with GF3, Heat, Carlito's Way, Scent of a Woman, Donnie Brasco, etc (though I guess it could be argued that Scarface was where it was really first popularised).
