If you use a piece of wire instead of that socket extension to hang the timing chain when you remove it from the camshaft, it won’t fall down and come off the crankshaft. Saves a lot of headache when putting things back together. Especially if you are removing more than just the valve cover.
It's all I had next to me to stick in there lol, the last 4 wheeler I did this too, I used a zip to to the frame above to ensure it kept the tension on the chain so it wouldn't fall off the crank
Hello! Great video thank you very much! Just had some questions, I tried my best to follow along with the video and after starting it up the piston now touches the valve. Any advice would be appreciated!
You might have the cam 180 degrees off, any time the Cam timing is off is when the valve would hit the piston. Ensure that when you are putting the cam in that the crank is lined up with the slit, and that you have the correct "pin" and oil galleries facing upwards on the camshaft, otherwise the timing will be wrong

When you turn the engine over with the bolt down below, does it turn the chain and cam? Can you move the cam wheel slightly and get the hole to line up before setting the tension? Because like I stated in the video, it might not line up perfectly, if you can get the punch holes to line up before you set the tension then you're all good
Your little dimple that you point out on that camshaft is the decompression system for that atv,the 08 honda trx700xx also has a decompression system on the camshaft but different, just so people know that's not a dimple and that's the atvs decompression system, not trying to be an a-hole....
But is everyday people going to know it? No, thats why In every video I try to ensure I use the simplest terms so people who don't know everything about engines can follow along.
You are actually incorrect on your cam the third hole does exist if you remove that little cover that's in between the other two holes on one side or the other there will be a third hole covered up by that plate on your cam gear
Like I tried to state in the video, if you get the cam gear to line up the dots with the surface, that's all it needs to be, when you set the tension it will be a little off, as long as BEFORE you see the tension it lines up, you're golden
Snap 358 was your timing right? Mine is doing the same thing...I spent hours messing with it and trying different teeth to compensate then eventually I found this comment and said screw it
This is why your timing chain snapped and this is not good info to give people sorry .. you need to bolt the Rocker Cover down before you put the tensioner in or you will stretch the chain
The manual specifically states after installing the cam and the timing chain to install the timing chain tensioner..... I've never had a timing chain break on any atv I have changed the timing chain on nor had any issues with them.
This video is a life saver. Im currently rebuilding my raptor 2005 660 and have everything apart. This will help when putting it back together!

@@austin_colt bruh I’m honestly considering it lmao I really don’t under stand what the difference between me just putting it in down wards or upwards Bc everytime i turn it to tdc they flip postitions
Hey man I put my new cam chain on and the tensioner or the black stick isint on but the chain is really tight and won’t pick up and a lot of compression when I turn to align the I mark what do you think is this issue
What does it not pick up? And it's going to have a lot of compression when turning it over, you can take the spark plug out to make it much easier to turn over
Hunter's Mechanics yeah it was the spark plug thank you but the chain still won’t pick up
@@crfisaiah3963 like you cant get it to connect at the bottom on the gear?
Hunter's Mechanics no I got it all connected but if I were to pick up the chain to put the cam in time it won’t pick up because it’s really tight on
@@crfisaiah3963 so you do no have the chain guide (the black slide) nor the tensioner on and you cant pick the chain up at all? Like not even a little bit? When you turn the engine over with the bolt down below, does it turn the chain and cam? (To ensure it's on the gear down below and not the shaft) because it's supposed to be moderately tight regardless, that's why you have to tilt the cam towards yourself to release a little bit of slack to move one tooth forward or behind
I took my raptor to a guy that said my timing chain was off and that it was “stretched” so I took the top end off an put it all back In dead center and I put everything back together an still won’t turn on, you think you can help me out?
Did you get a new chain?
Hunter's Mechanics no I think I was supposed to right
@@crfisaiah3963 if the chain is stretched it's always best to change it, they can get so loose that they skip a tooth and causes it to be out of time
@@crfisaiah3963 when was the last time you had it running?
Hunter's Mechanics maybe 2 weeks ago but this mechanic said my chain was stretched at first so I should change it
After I set top dead center then install the chain tensioner the punch holes are no longer sitting flush with the deck. No matter what I do I can’t seem to get it right. Any idea why that would be
Can you move the cam wheel slightly and get the hole to line up before setting the tension? Because like I stated in the video, it might not line up perfectly, if you can get the punch holes to line up before you set the tension then you're all good
@@Hunters_Mechanics yes it does before I add the tensioner.
I must have missed that part
Thanks man!!😊
Can u plz help
damn the dude behind the camera breathing hard asf
That was my grandpa, it was hot as balls outside and its hard enough to breathe in this garage lol
@@Hunters_Mechanics lol but other then that good vid!
Bro i CAN NOT get the cam gear perfect. As soon as I set the tension it’s off. 😂
Like I tried to state in the video, if you get the cam gear to line up the dots with the surface, that's all it needs to be, when you set the tension it will be a little off, as long as BEFORE you see the tension it lines up, you're golden
Hunter's Mechanics thanks I really appreciate it.
